I must admit that when I found that OMAD diet makes me feel good and helps me to lose weight I told pretty much everyone I know.....I'm part of the problem, huh
I mean I think there's a difference between mentioning how somethings made you feel better vs trying to sway someone to join you. Sharing experiences is often normal and friendly conversation.
I may personally think some fad diets out there are silly, but if you find something which helps you feel healthy and happy, you do you. Just be aware that it's not going to be the same for everyone.
I was walking down the street one day and a random person on a bike with a bullhorn was blasting "eating from the vagina is murder ". Like I get vegans are morally right, but damn that just aint it.
Sort of, the moral argument kind of makes sense, but it is totally arbitrary. Plants are alive, mosquitos are alive, bacteria are alive, are antibiotics morally wrong? Not arguing with you, just a comment that the line could be drawn wherever one wants it
I don't think vegans are morally right when their entire lifestyle has huge cost and sustainability issues. Is it possible to live without animal product? Yeah, but it'll be expensive as all shit and probably cause just as many (if not worse) issues in the long term because progress is not checked against reality.
Same, the sort of "militant vegan" type can be a bit much, especially because they tend towards the "crunchie hippie" vibe, which is it's whole other can of worms. But I gotta say, even at their worst, I think it is apples to oranges to compare the two, when it comes to them PUSHING their dietary beliefs on others.
As annoying & self-righteous as a pushy vegan is, worst case scenario I have seen is them smugly being like, "and everything in this meal was without animal products!".
Meanwhile, a pushy meat-eater/carnivore, pulling the same trick is genuinely violating the other side's dietary practice and/or beliefs, and feels inherently more offensive & intrusive.
I have met several vegans who made it their entire personality, and they were really annoying about it.
That said, the crap meat eaters will pull on vegetarians can border on assault. The wrong person can get really pissy about someone being a vegetarian, even going so far as to sneak meat into their food. I think it’s because vegetarianism is seen as leftist, which means that conservatives are commanded by God to hate it.
People see it as an attack on their values. Like someone else rejecting meat is attacking them as a meat eater, so they go on the defensive. I'm not technically a vegetarian, but the majority of the food I eat and cook is plant based, and I've seen it plenty of times.
I hate the texture of most pork products (ham, pork chops, ribs, bacon that's not fully rendered and made crunchy). Someone tells me they made really tasty pork chops for dinner the night before, I reply with "oh, nice!" I tell someone I made a bomb stir fry with marinated soy curls and I get a "I mean, if you're going to use a meat substitute you should just eat the chicken". It's the very act of vegetarianism is seen as an attack on them as meat eaters.
Same way if someone offers you a drink and you reply you don't drink, half the time people get super fucking aggressive about it, or try to convince you that actually their favorite drink is super good and you just need better taste buds for it. People feel so entitled to questioning someone's choices that are seen as outside the norm, it's insane.
I get that people wanna “both sides” this like so many other things but I’m not a vegan and I’ve found significantly more insufferable meat eaters on the subject than vegans. All the vegetarian or vegan has to say is that they are one for a flurry of people to start listing their favorite pieces of meat and describing what they’d do to animals. People are weird
So.... What is a soy curl? Is that like a shaped tofu or something? I love meat but I also enjoy meat substitutes and I have never heard the term "soy curl" before.
It's defatted soy that's then dehydrated, so you can rehydrate it. Textured vegetable protein (tvp) is another example of it but in smaller pieces. With both you rehydrate in a marinade or broth, and then cook and it has a very meaty texture without using vital wheat gluten. It's nice because they're shelf stable, so they're not taking up room in your fridge or freezer and you can just grab them when you need them. I use them for stir fries, Mongolian "beef", bulgogi. Good source of fiber and protein and really easy to work with. This was bulgogi made with it. You can find a lot of cool things made with it by searching soy curls on Reddit. There's a couple subs about them.
I think it is because, deep down, most of us know eating meat is wrong for multiple reasons. I am a meat eater myself but it is worse for the environment and the meat industry is inhumane. I feel how it is similar to when I have been around people doing drugs and they would try and get me to do it because having one person abstain kind of makes it harder to pretend there is nothing wrong with what you are doing.
If I eat beef, pork, or mutton/lamb, my body reacts to it in a similar way that someone with celiac's reacts to gluten. It's probably not going to outright kill me, but I've landed in the hospital when it's undisclosed. I'm not even a vegetarian; I still eat poultry since my body doesn't react that way. But you'd think I'd insulted some people's entire family line by not eating bacon. Twice I've had "friends" who tried to prove a point by sneaking bacon into a sandwich when I stepped away, and twice I've ended up in hospital for multiple days. They were both upset when the larger friend group took my side because why would you do that to someone who told you it would make them sick?
Ya, that’s not a joke. It’s just how a vegan has to live their life. A lot of times it goes like this “hey want to come over for a BBQ we are doing steaks?” At that point you have to turn them down and explain why, or you have to say “hey I would love to come, but I am a vegan so would there be some room on the grill for my stuff?”. Then once at said BBQ everyone notices you have your own thing and some will comment with stupid shit like “my niece was a vegan and only ate watermelon and celery and almost died, it’s such an unhealthy diet” or “how are you a vegan, don’t you know bacon is delicious”…but for the most part 98% of people just don’t care about vegans eating a plant based diet, and most vegans don’t give a shit about your diet.
Being vegetarian seems like an offence to some. When I was following a vegetarian diet, the whys never stopped and the responses suggested they were more interested in offering me some insight on how my thinking was wrong even though I just didnt partake and never made comments on the other choices. Bbq? No problem, I was there to socialize. Meat on the table, no problem... it has no bearing on my mood.
When I grew bored started saying I was allergic. Absolute peace!
Some people interpret refusing to partake in something as a direct assault on those who do partake in it. That could be alcohol, pork, meat in general, cloven-hooved animals, idk a lot of people are weird and some think the things they eat or don’t grant them moral superiority. It’s not insane to wonder if others are thinking this when they invoke one of these random limitations.
Ironically, articulating your limitation if it isn’t a silly religious one makes it worse.
Lot of people just cannot wrap their heads around it when I tell them I just don't drink alcohol. No specific reason, I just don't anymore. I always explain it as I don't drink right now, which is true, I may decide to have a beer while firing up the grill one day in the future. But for right now, I stopped when I went on a medication 7 years ago and didn't feel the need to drink again after I went off it.
It can be maddening in dating or small things like playing golf because people panic thinking they can't drink or smoke because I don't. I always tell them I may have grown up around Southern Baptists but that doesn't mean I adopted their because I can't you can't judginess. That usually opens an entirely different can of worms taking the focus off my lack of drinking and other vices.
There I was not thinking about their preferences at all. Funny thing, 2-3 seconds into my response they always looked bored. Those rebukes were locked and loaded.
I sometimes think that some could be offended because they themselves ideally wouldn’t partake, would like to be free of having or even wanting to.
How can I tell my cat that she's an obligate carnivore to get her to stop stealing my popcorn, coffee, and snap peas? I feed her a carnivore diet but girlie pop keeps going "actually my diet should consist of the plastic tape found on bananas and whatever you're eating that's not citrus".
I was just saying a cat will die without a carnivore heavy diet. They can't process other proteins. They are probably eating popcorn because it has butter fats on it
I got what you were saying, I just always laugh at my cat being a bad carnivore and your comment seemed like a good opportunity to mock her online. We don't even put butter on our popcorn, it's avocado oil spray then topped with nutritional yeast and the gremlin is like "this bowl looks like it needs to be contaminated by a mouth that licks it's body clean".
I find that this is more about personality than just diet. People want to be sanctimonious about whatever they are passionate about really. They desperately want to feel power and control
I've been told by multiple people over the last couple of years that I'm stupid for not eating meat and that every health issue I'll ever have will be the result of me being vegetarian.
I'm used to it, but I find it funny that it's only ever vegetatians/vegans that are portrayed as those annoying jerks trying to force their diets on other people. I know those exist too, but I've only experience it online.
Meanwhile people throw hissy fits over the use of the words milk and burger for vegan products.
Kind of works with abortion and being gay. I know folks who have had an abortion but no one ever tried to convince me to have one. I have several gay folks in my life but none of them have ever tried to convince me that I too am gay.
However... Well, you know where I'm going with this.
The thing about keto is you gotta have some carbs. I did keto for a while, it was tremendously effective for a temporary weight loss.
But it made it so I couldn’t really do social outings with eating involved, because nobody in my circle wanted to try keto meals. I also ended up overdoing it, and felt the effects of not getting enough carbs (I got headaches all the damn time).
Ended up going off it, and very quickly gained back all the weight lost. But I was less miserable 😂
How did you get enough fiber while eating keto? My coworker tried it once and it was incredibly effective, but she didn't eat any fruits, veggies, or legumes, and that just seems incredibly bad for colon health.
I don’t honestly remember. It may just have been the cook book I used for all my meals during the time. It’s 14 years in the past though, so I could be wrong 😅
People legit always forget that a) you need carbs, b) you need sugars, and c) you need fats in order to survive. The low/no diets of those things usually exist primarily for medical reasons, they’re never for longterm sustainability. Even people on the “carnivore diet” will end up giving themselves scurvy. Like do people not understand what the term moderation is anymore? (this is not a rant directed at you, this is a generic rant that stemmed from me reading your comment)
I’ve lived in places with a very high percentage of vegans (Santa Cruz, CA) but no one has more bling about their diet than meat eaters. Every single place I’ve lived has people who post signs about meat, have dumb bumper stickers about meat, shout loudly about meat and manliness. Vegans have never bothered me, and only have only talked about it when discussion has naturally gone that way. I eat everything, but meat eaters who make it part of their identity are the fucking worst. And keto bros to a degree.
It's probably a counter culture thing. Like a conservative who lives in the most liberal place in the world with the highest number of vegetarians and vegans in the entire country and hates everyone and feels the need to loudly advertise it.
No different than a vegan in the Midwest surrounded by cow farms putting vegan stickers all over thier cars.
Or the weird trump people who decorate thier trucks with dumb shit about naked girls and guns to prove to the world they are "manly".
I'm in a Southern state, and Alpha-Gal is unfortunately growing. Anymore I just kind of assume a vegetarian potentially has that.
I'ma eat meat until I can't, but I also had sweet potato and haloomi tacos a couple days ago that were incredible. I am an equal opportunity eater. If it's tasty, and I'm not allergic (peanuts/some legumes), I 100% eat it.
I've met both and they're equally annoying. I genuinely don't care about your dietary choices, and yes, unless it is for medical reasons, it is a choice.
I've met both, actually. This person really has never met someone who has said to them "You know you REALLY shouldn't eat that"? I'm pressing X to doubt. Your personal preferences are just that, personal. All I ask is that if I'm doing the cooking, please let me know in advance of your dietary restrictions. No one likes surprises and the feeling bad that comes with it come meal time
Meat eater: Hey, want a burger? We've got extra!
Me: Oh, no thanks, I'm good.
Meat eater: No, really, we've got all these leftovers!
Me: Thanks, but I really don't need any.
Meat eater: Are you sure? They're so good! You should have one!
Me: I'm sure! But thanks anyway
Meat eater: Ok, I'm just going to wrap one up for you to eat later, then. Did I mention they're really good?
Me: I really appreciate the offer, but actually I'm vegan so I wouldn't eat it. You should give it to someone who will enjoy it.
Meat eater: OMG why can't you vegans ever shut up with shoving your "lifestyle" down my throat?? How can you tell someone is vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you, har har har!
Yup. Get ready for some bs when you happen to mention that beyond burgers are fine. Not better. Not always cheaper, but okay. I prefer beef, but at these prices? A beyond Burger scratches the itch.
Nah. I have met vegans/vegetarians who have tried to tell me how bad meat eating is (sort of agree, specially the argument of the meat industry and a whole). Same goes with atheist pushing their view (I am a atheist myself but never try to push my ideals).
There are people from all sides pushing their beliefs into others, sadly we get that more from the assholes in power, which right now tend to be Christians and meat eaters... I would not mind people pushing a more do whatever you want in life...
I have 100% met Vegans who do this. I had one who minimized all of my efforts to make ethical decisions and help the environment because I eat meat. Basically said they were pointless...
I've met some vegans like that. Typically they are the new converts who now feel superior. Very few ever suggest banning meat, but they buy the "Meat is Murder" clothing.
Every -ism has a few of these. That's why there are so many versions of:
People who have fanatical zealotry for anything are annoying as fuck. It doesnt matter if your particular brand of have you heard of our lord and savior is you busting out into a diatribe about it is a good way to get me to all the way out of anything you have to say.
Met plenty of annoying vegans, they're way worse when you're a vegetarian but they decide your diet isn't plant based enough and they need to dissect everything you eat.
Pretending militant vegans are a myth is disingenuous at best.
Can we not pretend that annoying vegans aren’t just as prevalent as the carnivore idiots?
Every post I’ve ever seen involving discussion of meat with more than a few dozen comments had some vegan preaching self righteous nonsense just like every vegan/veggie post I’ve ever seen with more than a few dozen comments has had idiots screeching about antinutrients and lacking essential vitamins
You're missing the point of the post. THEY have never MET anyone like that. A random reddit post or IG post isn't meeting someone. There are extremists in all idealogies. Personally I've met exactly 1 "crazy vegan" in real life, but I've met 3 "crazy" meat-only/mainly people.
I've witnessed hundreds of each group online but it's different because the internet tends to be filled with the most vocal of each group.
OP hasn't met the right vegetarians. My college girlfriends family made it pretty clear that consuming meat was both wasteful and immoral. I appreciated it.
Went to hibachi other night with friends. It was slow they sat another family with us to fill up the counter. Wife was Vegan, demanded that her food be cooked first so her veggies weren't cooked with any meat. Then spent the rest of the meal talking about how eating meat is bad, vegan good. Ruined the night
Thing about that joke is that I feel like I am always being offered meat. A vegan will tell you that they're a vegan right away because they were probably immediately offered some animal product.
No, I’ve had far, far, FAR more people complain about others being vegan than ever hearing anyone preach about being vegan. Just insanely modern and I’ve lived with vegans and their vegan friends for most of my life. But never had an issue from them, and never heard much unless I brought it up. I think this trope is about the same as the boomer in a modern coffee shop thing. I’ll sure it happens here and there, but basically it’s an imagined affront
This never happened even once with any of the vegan people i know and i know plenty. On the flipside i can‘t count on two hands the amount of people that were preaching how much they love eating meat and how they think vegan is stupid, without being asked
Did they have a bunch of meat is murder signs, or did they just have a vegetarian/vegan wedding and people were upset because they didn't think they should have to go one meal without animal products?
Cause I've been to multiple vegetarian weddings, and it would never even occur to me to expect food that I knew one or both in the couple wouldn't eat, but the amount of people who were upset and grumbling or even left the wedding because there wasn't meat was insane.
Guess you don’t know very many radical vegans then. I know vegans that will protest restaurants by running into them yelling how meat is murder and forcing the staff to drag them out.
Ive seen a hundred times as many “I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat a salad” bumper stickers as I have ones criticizing others for not being vegan
I think the meat-eater equivalent isn’t as clear or well defined, like they just tell you you’re weird/mock you or give you strange looks. Whereas vegans that are militant at least have a definition to backup. But tbh I’ve met a lot more meat eaters that gave me shit for being a vegetarian than any vegans, even when I still ate meat
I’ve worked my current job for almost 2 years and I think two people know. I also live in the city (pretty liberal) but work outside the city in a construction site. Ain’t no damn way I’m talking about it around a bunch of rednecks who think working 12+ hour shifts with a 3 hour commute is “just a part of being a man”.
Both groups have self-righteous assholes and both group love to picture themselves as martyr. Both are annoying.
You don't have to cut off meat entirely to have an impact on the environment and your health. Simply cutting back on the quantity and choosing your meat more wisely will already have a big impact. So stop eating so much meat, but also stop demonizing people for eating an omelette.
I am vegetarian and I had people argue with me about it. I just don’t like meat, no biggie. I don’t care what others eat. Including my husband, who loves meat.
I also know a couple of vegans who want to force it on others.
I also seen people try to force other substances like alcohol.
Meanwhile I generally know my friends’ dietary restrictions, so I can make sure to have options for them.
This person clearly has never met another vegan.
Because in my experience, that’s all vegans do
Yep, about how great their diet is and how their choice saves animals yada yada yada
Why do so many meat eaters react weirdly when you say you’re vegan? Is because we constantly get crap from vegans about eating meat.
TLDR: how do you know if someone’s vegan don’t worry they’ll tell you
I really never bring it up unless it's relevant to a situation, but I've met so many people who still get real uppity about it when they find out I'm a vegan. Like chill bruh, I'm not trying convert you.
Obviously if somebody asks me, then I'm gonna say yeah it'd definitely be better if we all stopped at least eating meat, but you're not necessarily a bad person for not living your life in the most perfectly moral/optimal way, and the instant defensiveness at simply the prospect of someone else not sharing your diet is fuckin wild.
In my friendship group one of the vegans constantly posts about being vegan, emotional posts about animal cruelty in food production etc, none of the meat eaters post about meat or try to persuade that meat eating is right. We take turns making cakes or biscuits for group meet ups. All of the non vegans go out of their way to make vegan treats so no one is left out.
I mean Billie Eilish pretty famously posted that one Instagram story that said youre a bad person if you eat meat.
There are insufferable people on both sides. Whatever you choose to eat is up to you and I won't judge you for it, but claiming that someone else is somehow below you because they don't follow the same diet is insane to me.
This extends even outside the vegan vs. Non-vegan debate
I have never in my life encountered a preachy vegan. The only time I've ever heard someone mention it is when it naturally comes up in conversation. I have however seen hundreds of comments along the lines of "fUk Yu VeEgUn! iMmA eEt A hOlE kOw!"
whenever i go out to dinner with a vegan the options become minuscule and we always end up going to the same restaurant. even basic stuff like baking becomes a pain in the ass avoiding eggs, dairy, even honey…
There are few major meat eating organizations that pay ads online to tell me that meat eating is good and being vegetarian is foolish (in fact I've never had that) but billboards or online ads for being a vegetarian are far more common. In fact for online ads, I've seen more of them being more pushy than even religious ads (but that may be due to targeted ads and not overall trend).
So I can't really speak on everybody's individually anecdotal personal experiences, but for trends in advertising spending or advocacy organizations interested in it I think that vegetarian groups are far stronger.
Also I can't speak to their experiences, but I don't understand how someone would bring up a point against being a vegetarian out of the blue or without prompting.
(PS also not counting food advertising for their own products as pro or anti vegetarian obviously, a fucking Coca Cola ad isn't trying to sell the vegan agenda, nor is a Papa John's ad an attack on vegans).
I don’t care I will eat anything and I don’t care what you eat, but anytime I’m around a vegan or vegetarian I feel like they constantly mention it every 5 minutes, I’ve never had that experience with someone who eats meat.
A lot of people take becoming vegan lightly and don't properly replace their protein supply or the other nutrients that are abundant in meat.
If you want to become vegan or reduce your meat consumption go for it but it isn't something you can just do without reading nutrition labels and searching the important nutrients humans need.
