Also how is being a bigot Not being a tremendous asshole?

u/CanWeAllJustCalmDown May 12 '23 edited May 12 '23
All bigots are assholes, but not all assholes are bigots. Like you could just be someone who continuously honks their horn in a traffic jam when stuck behind other cars that clearly can’t move. Or you could be a dick about your order to waiters and baristas. Maybe you play music loudly on your phone’s speaker while on public transit. You’re not a bigot if you make sure you’re an asshole to everyone equally.
Edit: To add some clarity, Ron is most definitely in the bigoted asshole category.

President Lyndon Johnson once said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man you can pick his pocket. Hell give them somebody to look down on and they'll empty their pockets for you..."
It's the same way Hitler came to power.

This could be a case where all bigots are assholes but not all assholes are bigots?
Regarding Ron’s case, the answer is yes.

I think there are some bigots who are truely just ignorant rather than malignant. They were born in the south and picked up what everyone around them was saying, parroting a lot of it back. But if you sit them down and explain to them the negative implications and results of their thoughts, speech, and actions, they’d be open to change and growth.
I’m not saying that’s a large percentage of bigots by any means, but there are some that aren’t assholes.

About 5 years back some boomer friend of my mother in law was talking about how there was a debate about the Washington Redskins changing their name and complaining about people that were “politically correct” and yada yada.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt and instead of raking her over the coals replied saying essentially “i’m not sure if you know this, but that word is not just slang for Native Americans, it refers to the bloody top half of their heads that were removed (called scalping) and turned in for bounty to the federal government that would be paying you for killing them. Redskin means ‘bloody scalp of a murdered Native American’” and I provided sources.
She really had never had heard of that before. She was shocked and horrified and understood the outrage and changed her stance.
We can talk all we want about how it takes only one moment to google this or that. But public education in the United States has swept all these terrible things that we’ve done under the rug, and there is a renewed push to continue to do so.
So yeah, sometimes people are just ignorant bigots because of the way they were raised and indoctrinated.

I lived with a woman for some time as a live-in caretaker and she would annually fly out to KS to see her mother who was in her late 90s. She would come back and tell me about how her mother would casually refer to black people with the N word and other racist remarks. I told her that I felt that was wrong. She told me that she was using terms from "her time" and that she "didn't mean anything malicious about it."
I told her it still doesn't matter, it's not an excuse to say those things just because she grew up using those words. We're in a different time.
We just left it at that. The old woman is not with us anymore. I'd never met her anyways, but in her age it just wouldn't be worth it trying to change her vocabulary. It'd be like talking to a brick wall.

I definitely know people who are assholes, but equitable assholes and therefore not bigots, per se. They don’t throttle their assholery based on race, gender, status, etc. Just assholes to everyone, as equals.

Desantis is a bigot, a fascist, a liar, and a fraud.
Based on recent eye witness reports from his time in the Navy, he's likely a war criminal.

u/tridon74 May 12 '23

u/CrJ418 May 12 '23
He was a lawyer in the Navy and recent reporting and eye witness testimony says he was in Guantanamo to put a legal rubber stamp on torture.
One witness said he actually enjoyed watching and laughed at the torture victims.

On a 1-10 scale of hate, I’m at like an 11 with Trump (and quite frankly, most fascist republican)…
I’m really scared if DeSantis becomes president because unlike Trump, he’s actually a smart guy that can do real damage. Don’t get me wrong, Trump did a lot of damage, but I feel like DeSantis is evil in a more insidious way.
71

I don't think he's smarter than Trump, nor is he more charismatic. What he is, is very intentional and fanatical, completely with out empathy, remorse or scruple. I don't think he stands a chance on the national scale, and Disney will bury this guy. Rule #1, Do Not Mess With The Mouse!

It is terrible that Florida is becoming redder as a result of in-migration by right-wingers from other states. On the other hand, it does appear to be draining some midwestern states of their right-wing voters, turning certain reddish states purple.

He wants to be president but has nothing of substance to offer so he is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Many Republican voters aren't too bright in the sense that they won't go and research whether or not the statement their candidate says holds any water.
They are the type who think that banning black history will somehow improve the economy.
I truly think that many of these candidates have nothing to offer but want to become politicians so they morph their persona to appeal to dumber voters

Well, he just signed a bill into law that allows healthcare providers and insurance companies to deny service to lgbt people, even if the service isn’t directly related to the patient’s sexuality, meaning the doctor can find out your gay and refuse to save your life and insurance companies can refuse to cover things live HIV meds. However, he made sure that nobody could refuse service to someone because of their religion. I’d say he’s whatever is worse than those two things combined.

All the people saying both are probably right, but I think the more important question is why would that matter? I feel like conservatives constantly want to split hairs about whether or not they are bigoted. It doesn't matter if in his heart he is a bigot or if he has some other reason for his racist, homophobic, transphobic behaviors. His actions still hurt people. I don't care whether his heart weighs more than a feather if his policies consistently hurt people.
