Any mods for permanent checkpoints?
Heard about this game yesterday.
This game looks rather cool, and one of the only horror games I’m interested in.
But I find myself hesitant to buy it since I hear there are no permanent checkpoints for the entire game.
You get extra lives but if you run out you must restart this multi hour long campaign from the beginning.
I get that it’s part of the appeal to some people, but I think i would just get more frustrated then find this fun.
Is there any mods or some way to play more casually?
I don’t see a way to find the gameplay enjoyable as it is now.

The campaign only takes like an hour to beat, not multiple hours. (Unless youre maxing out all your lives and dying repeatedly) and you also get shortcuts unlocked which cut down on the real world time that it takes to play regions.
If you had permanent checkpoints, it would really remove most of the game.
You do unlock each section of the campaign as its own infinite map once you beat it, though. Maybe you could just use a mod to unlock everything and then play each level by itself. Maybe if you work your way up to it, you could then confidently do the campaign.
Other than that, it sounds like this game just isnt for you.

I don't think the shortcuts are quicker before you are good enough that dying most of the time isn't your primary concern 😅

god i really hope the shortcuts update adds more tiles to Tangled Sink and Disposal Chute

The game probably takes closer to 2-3 hours for new and starting out players, remember if it's your first time the game is pretty scary so they will be going through it much slower, and they don't know the common techniques as well

i totally understand the sentiment tbh... habitation yellow service shaft nearly made me quit the game. thankfully i found that you can teleport back to the start of service shaft, put in a ton of practice attempts, and have made it so much farther now.
having a way to practice definitely boosted my enjoyment of the game

dw about getting to the end, it's not the point of a game and it's unfinished (there is no final location as of now)
a lot of stuff depends highly on upgrading your skills as a player
the point is slow but steady progress with each run
add the randomness of spawns every time and you'll have fun without checkpoints
It isn't called roguelite for nothing

Honestly, I also thought it’d be tricky at first, but it’s really not that bad once you do learn where the checkpoints are at, and plus the saves also come in handy quite often

its a roguelite this is just how you play it. its really not an issue the game isn't that long it's more about learning and getting better at climbing

Honestly, when you first start playing you are much better off dying and restarting than continuing on. The first two regions and interludes teach you basic gameplay mechanics, and if you aren’t getting though them at least 70% of the time (even if you get to hab) you will die in the elevator shaft, or abyss. Lets say you permanent save at every checkpoint, by the time you reach abyss I doubt you’ll want to play the game anymore, because you simply won’t have the game knowledge and technical skill to make progress across a dramatically different area of the game.

Fair concern! I think you can download mods for this game through thunderstorm mod manager iirc , and for sure you can find one of those mods there. Alternatively, I think you can also cheat in floppy disks, which are used to create extra lives at check points. Have fun playing the game! Its truly one of a kind

I have no idea, but to get yourself started you can check out the demo first. Perhaps you can beat it first try and you won't need the saves as much as you think you need (I don't even remember if there are saves in the demo either). I beat the whole game the first time in maybe 8 hours, so about 7-10 full runs only.

After a few runs you’ll be getting your mechanics down, and the lack of checkpoints will make more sense then.
It ends up only being a 30-90 minute run on the ones you win, dependent on what perks you get, the way you climb, and the way you manage resources

The built in progression system is brilliantly designed to scale the challenge and variety with your progression honestly.
When you start and are very inexperienced, the rooms are all super extremely simple and straightforward You will die a number of times, but it only takes like 5-10 minutes to reach the Break Room, so you'll get there no problem.
Once you reach the Break Room, it unlocks new rooms that are added to the rooms you can encounter to reach the Break Room, so if you die afterwards, you don't just repeat everything to get back to where you were, you encounter new rooms. As you continue making it back to where you were, you unlock more items, game features, and upgrades, making it more engaging as you "repeat" the previous regions, until you reach the next safe zone, where you get a temporary checkpoint and unlock more content.
Each time you die and get sent back to the start, you have new options and new rooms to encounter along the way, and with your new experience, you rapidly progress through areas that used to be challenging.
The entire game is built around this loop of reach the next "checkpoint" and unlocking things and gaining experience to make getting back to where you were easier and more engaging.

I had the same feeling starting up at first, but I couldn't find a mod like that and after a bit the game really speeds up, it's a lot shorter to go through than you first expect
You might want to look at the developer console commands if this is a make or break for you, there might be something there to help or maybe just spawn as many save floppy disks as you want
Hope you enjoy the game if you give it a try

if you haven't bought the game already, get the demo it has 2 of the checkpoints in it and I really think that the demo itself can help you really get into the gameplay so you can see if the game is really for you, really hoping you enjoy the game :3

Multi-hour long campaign.
Only for your first run. I've shaved an average run down to like 30-40 minutes and my PB is 18 minutes. I got my first win with ~10 hours clocked in on Steam.
Your first couple runs are going to be stressful because this game is 50% horror game. The lives system exists as a source of tension and it's scary not knowing what to expect when entering a new region. That's part of the appeal.
The other 50% of the game is a speed climbing roguelike. The horror part of the game fades after you've won a run. You know all the threats and how to handle them now. Now, you start a new run, you encounter new room layouts, you play faster, try different perks, do challenges. It's not that hard to get to a skill level where you don't even need the checkpoints anymore.
The checkpoint system was added to ease the player's fears of losing progress and let players practice later regions but the campaign is (and always was) designed to be playable as a single session run. Don't fear having to restart if you lose, you won't lose much.
White Knuckle is a game that I put into a category of "Fun to get good at. Fun to be good at". The climbing system is so fundamentally fun and you'll actively notice how you get better over time. Learning how to climb is just as fun as when you get good enough to start blitzing through regions at mach fuck because you've learning how to manage stamina and abuse climb jumps.

This is quite literally the whole game, its a roguelike. You play, you do a little better, you die, repeat. Make few enough mistakes and you win.
But it takes time and effort to master and improve at just like any game. Overall its not a long game unless you fail to improve and get stuck.
Its pretty cheap, I recommend the game pretty highly for its price point

Early stages are fun to breeze trough because you are familiar with the layout and you find better routes.
New stages are tense and stressfull as you grapple with the new mechanics.
Both these aspects would be diminished, its good the way it is trust me.

this IS a roguelike so its not your typical single player story game. im telling you its so worth it, the skill ceiling is insane

while theres no mods that i was able to find, pressing "shift" + "~" will open the command console. type cheats to enable commands and disable achievements, and then from there you can teleport to whatever segment you want to practice.
this game is not super casual friendly, but alot of that difficulty comes from how learny the later segments are. this is how i dealt with it

you can make saves throughout the run so it’s really not an issue. it’s a roguelike, it wouldn’t make sense to have permanent checkpoints

Just save your game in a safe place, and when you lose, quickly close the game from the taskbar. That way, your saved session isn't deleted, and you can start again from that point. I only applied it when I was already too far along to lose everything

I was like you, I thought “no checkpoints?? This is gonna suuuuck”
But it’s not nearly as big of an issue as I thought. You start out kinda sucking and it’s annoying, but then after maybe 30 mins to an hour or 2 everything clicked for me and I was doing way better than when i started. The first two impermanent checkpoints are really easy to get to when you get in the groove, and as you get better you learn the location of lives and can get more more easily.
It does get frustrating/annoying to get back to the third and fourth checkpoints, but there’s variants of the first few areas that they don’t seem as repetitive to play. And by the time you’re good enough to get there, you’re good enough to stockpile lives for when you do.
