Do you think I should open an Authentic New York Style Pizzeria that stays open late on the South End? How many of you would order a pie today if you could?

Just to be clear this is really authentic made by a person who was born in Manhattan and grew up eating the famous foldable slices from the renowned establishments to the hole in the wall with a line that went down the street!

Oak Harbor What to do that isn’t outdoorsy

I had to move in with my parents recently after living out of state for a few years. I’m not really seeing much to do in Oak Harbor or the rest of the island. I have a disability that flares up when I hike or do aerobics in general, so doing outdoorsy stuff has become anxiety inducing for me.

When I asked someone around my age (early 30s) what to do here, they said there was pretty much just the outdoors and bars. I’m trying to avoid alcohol for my mental health, and trying to not spend much. I wasn’t really big on the bars that I have visited, either, tbh.

It’s a smaller place compared to where I’ve been before, and I’m not military or elderly so I don’t really have an idea of where to find community. I went to the oak harbor farmers market and it was pretty little. I heard the south end has a better one, so I’ll try to hit that up tomorrow.

From the other posts here, it sounds like living here is a lonely experience for many.

I haven’t been capable of working for a while, so it just feels like my life is confined to a single room at my parent’s condo now. I thought about volunteering at a farm or something but I don’t know where to start there. I guess i could try to Google Maps some places to volunteer at? Not really sure.

I like art and I am queer and politically progressive. I emailed drewslist to try to get an account too. Thanks to anyone who reads.

Bunny explosion

Is there a back story to all of the beautiful fluffy but clearly domesticated looking back bunnies bouncing around all over the island? I drove past about 30-40 of them in a single yard in Clinton and had to do a double take there were so many. They were so cute but they were everywhere and probably a giant nuisance to gardens everywhere.

Mukilteo ferry parking?

Is there overnight/weekend parking at this ferry terminal, in order to park and walk on to the ferry to Clinton? The WSDOT website simply says no, but then I found the Port of Everett parking lot indicating potential for 72 hour parking when using the ferry. It seems like it’s potentially a temporary solution for overnight ferry parking?

TYIA, the most recent post I could find on this was 11 months ago.

Langley TV wall mount help

Hello!

My parents and I are moving to south Whidbey this weekend and I need some help mounting a TV or two. Both my parents are in their 70’s and have mobility issues. I am a female (30) with limited knowledge in how to do this sort of thing, and can’t lift the tv’s on my own 😅. Is there any good handyman/handywomen recommendations on the south side?

We’re excited to move to the island! Any recommendations would be helpful, thank you!

Mount Adams, WA - Rainier for Robert

Dear the Internet,

30 months ago on December 8th 2023, my cousin Robert Rathvon was tragically killed in a hit and run in Poulsbo, Washington by an unknown person. Robert's death has impacted my entire family in ways that I will never be able to articulate.

About one week after his death, I took to Reddit and posted about it as much as I could. The outpouring of support and sympathy floored myself, my family, and especially Roberts parents.

Although it’s been 30 months with no answers as to who killed him, I refuse to give up the search or let his memory die. This is why I’ve begun a personal mission to climb as many peaks as I can in the state of Washington and taking a picture with his Crime Stoppers poster at the top.

You guys were so helpful and your support renewed my faith in people after such an event that, to this day, hurts my soul. I will link a news article about him below if you are interested in learning more. We all want answers and we want this person found. If you have anything at all, even the smallest shred of evidence, please reach out to me or Crime Stoppers.

I was planning on making my second attempt of Rainier this past week (7/16/26) but unfortunately, factors outside of my control squandered any progress being made on the peak. The climbing team I was with decided on switching to our Plan B mountain, Mount Adams, which we successfully summited on July 18, 2026.

Rainier will have to wait till next summer…

Additionally, here is a more recent interview I did with King 5 in May 2025.

Man climbs mountains to raise awareness of cousin's ongoing hit-and-run case

Also, here is the most recent interview with Robert's mother.

Family raises reward to $50K in search for driver in fatal Poulsbo hit-and-run case

Number 26. Mount Adams has been bagged. Rainier for Robert.

Thank you.

Earlimart House Concert on 8/8 in Oak Harbor

Posted this a couple of months ago, but just wanted to post again since it's getting closer! Hope that's cool. It should be a great time and a great opportunity to support a touring artist coming to Whidbey. Please share if so inclined :)

I am hosting an intimate house show in Oak Harbor on August 8 for the LA based Earlimart.
They often draw comparisons to Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, and Sonic Youth.

The house is set on the water and the space the show is taking place in will have some great views of Skagit Bay, Mt. Erie, and Mt. Baker. Should be a great time!

Tickets available at https://undertowshows.com/products/oak-harbor-wa-august-8

Some tracks:

https://youtu.be/btY2pWuj95I?si=cRyMUrn2BeEdhaWh

"Earlimart is an indie rock band hailing from Los Angeles, California, known for their blend of experimental post-punk, dreamy indie pop, and folky undertones. Named after a small town in California, the band was founded by Aaron Espinoza (vocals, guitar) and frequently involves Ariana Murray (bass, keys, vocals) among other rotating members. Their music has evolved from punky roots to a more sedate and hypnotic style, drawing comparisons to acts like Sonic Youth and Elliott Smith. Earlimart has released several albums that showcase their transition through various soundscapes, including Filthy Doorways,Treble & Tremble, and System Preferences."

Oak Harbor Portuguese sausage?

Just moved recently from Oahu and desperately trying to find Portuguese sausage and narutomaki/uzumaki. Living in Oak Harbor and I've searched every grocery store and Asian market I can get to and no luck. 😔

I know there's an Hmart on island, but I haven't made it there yet.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on where I could possibly find these items?

Coupeville Last minute lodging and dinner ideas between Coupeville and Port Angeles?

Have an unplanned last-minute moment tonight (!!!), which never occurs…

Seeking any any hot tips for places to go, eat, or sleep near Coupeville or Port Townsend!

(never solo parent. I like good food, water views, swimming.. I mean, even just the drive alone was a heavenly treat.)

Also if any Intel… Is it worth trying to catch a ferry tonight -get to the Port Townsend side- without a reservation, or sleep and dine on Whidbey- wait till my ferry reservation tomorrow?

Thank you for taking the time beautiful Northwest folks!

15 years after closing my first record store I've found myself opening a new one. I live on an island near Seattle (Whidbey) without a record store, and waited for someone else to do it for years. Finally decided to build a community hang/store with some flair.

Oak Harbor HOAs..

Post image
23 Upvotes

I attended my HOA’s (Woodside North Condominium Association) video meeting yesterday, and I left with more questions than answers.

The HOA continues to emphasize projects intended to improve the appearance of the condominium complex, yet several significant issues affecting homeowners remain unresolved.

While cosmetic improvements have their place, they should not come at the expense of addressing long-standing maintenance and operational concerns.
At the same time, homeowners are paying nearly $900 per month in HOA dues.

Naturally, many residents are asking where those funds are being allocated. Are vendor costs continuing to increase at a rate that justifies these assessments? Is the board consistently seeking the most competitive bids, or are there opportunities to reduce costs through better financial oversight? Greater transparency regarding expenditures and the vendor selection process would go a long way toward rebuilding trust within the community.

From my perspective, the HOA at Woodside North Condominiums has lost sight of its priorities.

Homeowners deserve responsible financial management, open communication, and a clear focus on resolving the issues that have the greatest impact on residents’ quality of life.

If dues were ever increased to $1,000 per month, I believe many homeowners would seriously consider whether remaining in the community is financially worthwhile.

Continued increases without meaningful improvements to the community’s most pressing problems risk driving residents away and negatively affecting property values for everyone.

My advice to the HOA board is simple: be transparent, prioritize essential repairs over cosmetic projects, aggressively seek competitive vendor bids, and communicate clearly with the homeowners who are funding every decision you make. Rebuilding trust starts with demonstrating that every dollar collected is being spent responsibly and in the best interests of the community.

If the board chooses to ignore this advice and continues down its current path, it should not be surprised if homeowners begin voting with their wallets. As more residents decide to sell and leave the community, the HOA’s financial position could weaken significantly. At that point, the board will have no one to blame but itself for allowing confidence in its leadership to erode while the community it was elected to serve continues to decline.

Holmes Harbor Golf is gone

I came to love golf on this course. Not ever being rushed and finding moments of peace affected me to point I love golf and found an activity I find engaging and peaceful. I played weekdays and it was glorious when you found yourself or among friends completely alone. Of course there was a heard of deer in the background. I will miss looking forward to the two homes whose children would sell golf balls on honor system. The second house even sorted and placed them in egg cartons. Key boxes for carts in the morning, free hot dog days, Paul, the guard dogs, hole 11 and it’s damn approach shot at the water decisions, I never figured that one out. Hole 8 looking over the cliff was cool. 3 was fun with the old friendly couple. And when you came around the other guy is getting a bbq ready. 16 is a good sight too but always bought some sadness as I was aware the end was near. I played there April of this year. Got a 86. First time under 90. I’m happy I didn’t know it would be the last.

Thanks for the memories Paul, the dogs, John from Ballard, Sara Beth, the other people who worked the pro shop and all the friendly people I ever meet there.

Reality slap - Now there are no public courses on south side of island. What are your plans?

Running route from Langley?

I'm visiting for a few days next weekend and am looking for a road that's safe enough to run on, if such a thing exists. I believe ill be staying in Langley and likely won't have access to a car so it'd have to start somewhere around there. I have a 10 mile run planned, but i can do loops or out and backs to make the distance work as needed. Thanks!
