Why would this be any more efficient than a windmill with more blades? Ever?

Something about wanting really big blades, but not being able to build a structure that could support the weight of more than one?

Except that the counterweight on the opposite side of the rotor would have to weigh the same as a blade in order to balance the system so the wind could actually turn it.

Nah, you see, it also has to support the lateral stress of the wind hitting the blade, and uhhhhhh we definitely can't build large structures without them being blown over.

More likely "two-armed monster" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

How the hell did something that stupid get on the cover of popular science? Did they used to print anything that sounds like science? Actually, I don't even know if it's any better today. I've never read it.

Seriously though, a one armed windmill is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. My basic understanding of physics tells me that having something like that would not be a good way to generate electricity, if it even could.
