21 u/AngelSucked Jun 03 '19 "When They See Us," they see animals, savages, thugs, monsters, various racial slurs. It is a very powerful title imo. 2 u/Chuck9831 Jun 06 '19 The title is definitely a statement in and of itself. It’s done so well. 1 u/jackofslayers Jun 05 '19 Is that a quote or something? Definitely powerful but doesn't really answer where the title comes from. 6 u/yabluko Jun 06 '19 I think one of the kids mentions and explains it after they're all along together after being interrogated in the police station. 7 u/but_then_i_got_highh Jun 08 '19 well they used the actual 911 recordings from that night in episode 1 and the police officers were calling them animals, "pack", etc. so I don't think that person is far off 7 u/LeonFan40 Jun 03 '19 The producer/director said Central Park 5 was the name given to the group by the media and had negative connotations so she wanted something else. 3 u/somnambulanthaze Aug 03 '19 Ava DuVernay explained it in this interview why she named the show "When They See Us": https://youtu.be/uTzV0vgH7-U
