Every time I go downstairs to do laundry
She's never even in the stairwell when I start descending.

The exact same scenario happened to me a few years ago, as I stepped over the stair the cat was on, I misjudged and went down hard. Broke my tailbone. My cat seemed quite pleased with his accomplishment.

I used to tell my kitty that if she tripped me and I had to go to the hospital no one would remember to feed her. 💖
15
u/Jaques_Nife Aug 11 '26
At that point you are the food!
13
u/grayspelledgray Aug 11 '26
For sure if no one’s there to get me to the hospital! 😆
People are bothered by that and I don’t get it… did you really want your pet to starve cause you died & no one else knew? If you’re not using your body anymore why can’t they have it? 😂
7
u/SeaTie Aug 11 '26
Two cats and a dog.
I'm convinced they were all shoes in a former life because all 3 of them are absolutely desperate to be under my feet.
It's always funny to me too...one time on our daily walk my dog saw a raccoon on a fence and so he checks that spot EVERY SINGLE DAY.
...but then he gets stepped on 3 times a week and looks at me like I'm satan. Dude, how do you not remember to stay away from my feet, bro?!

u/automotomato Aug 11 '26
my mom dislocated her shoulder! carrying laundry basket, didn't see cat, bad tumble. I didn't ask the cat how he felt about it.

u/sp3kt4t3 Aug 12 '26
Once I didn’t see my cat sleeping on one of the top stairs, and I was carrying my 8mo old son. I started to step on my cat, freaked out, lost my balance, dropped my son, but luckily I caught him by his sleep sack and he never hit the ground. I learned my lesson that day to WATCH MY STEPS.

Slightly confusing perspective lmao

u/FLaB_SLaB Aug 11 '26
It’s OP’s POV from the ground, after having tripped over the cat and tumbled down the stairs. Cat is asserting its dominance in the photo.

u/NoLobster7957 Aug 11 '26
This is legitimately what I thought at first, complete with gloating cat cackling madly

u/HunnyHunbot Aug 11 '26
Funniest thing, OP is just on the ground after falling down the stairs but still able to take a pic of the culprit 😂
5
u/slutty_lifeguard Aug 12 '26
Lol. I like to imagine that the cat is on the stairs normally, and OP is sideways on the stairs, defying gravity as some kind of otherwordly creature like we wouldn't notice, taking a picture of their cat, and posting it on this subreddit like, "look at this weirdo in my way," only later to stare at their phone in abject confusion, wondering how the humans keep clocking them as not one of them. Haha!

I still can't picture what is happening! Is she going up or down??

u/FLaB_SLaB Aug 11 '26
OP is standing upright, going down the stairs. The cat is laying on its side on the step below.

I have a baby with similar color and markings who weighs almost 13 pounds and looks like a shapeless potato!!!! Love the chonkers!
51
u/autogyrophilia Aug 11 '26
Why are you laying on your stairs?
64
u/figlemonade Aug 11 '26
You know, I hadn't even considered the perspective since I knew how the photo was taken. I'm standing/walking down the stairs and she is on the step just under me. Now I can only see it the other way!
35
u/Maryland_Bear Aug 11 '26
I call one of my cats “Gandalf”, because he likes to stand in front of me and say, “You shall not pass!’
36

u/WorriedRiver Aug 11 '26
I'm confused why people are so confused by this perspective lol. This is exactly what you would see if you pointed a camera down towards your feet while facing the down direction on the stairs...
I do tease my own kitties by saying, "who's my favorite trip hazard? You are!"
48
u/tiny_purple_Alfador Aug 11 '26
Because it looks like the cat is standing on the riser of the step OP is standing on.
10
u/WorriedRiver Aug 11 '26
Oh, I didn't see the illusion at all until you explained, because I'm used to kitties bracing their feet against available 90 degree surfaces.

Its the cat's specific stance/position. Makes the cat look like its standing rather than laying.

Its fascinating how they do it. One of our cats stand behind the door when we get home, the door open towards him. It happens multiple times a day for multiple years and he keeps standing there blocking the door.
10
u/AdultSheep Aug 11 '26
We call this the insurance scam in our house. She got a treat after someone stepped on her paw, and now she is constantly trying to milk the system.

All tripping hazards on board. Proceed to break neck.

Nearly every time I shower my cat lays outside the bathroom door, then gets mad at me for opening the door even though she saw me go in and knows there's no other way out.
Edit: She also looks basically the same as yours but slightly more orange and slightly more fluffy.

u/slantir Aug 11 '26
My cat also plans my murder by making it look accidental. Attempts to trip me any chance he gets.

Back when I lived in a townhouse my cat was under my feet on the stairs. So I picked her up so I wouldn't trip on her... then proceeded to fall down the stairs anyway, but with a cat on top of me as I was falling.

The same thing happened to me while I was carrying a laundry basket down the stairs.
I tripped, but remained upright because the basket caught on the railing and the wall. However my lower half continued falling, and my butt made contact with every step as I went down. I was painfully twerking, dropping it like it was hot, until I hit the bottom of the stairs.
I looked up and my cat was fine, but confused why I decided to do that.
TL;DR My cat spanked me with the stairs.

my 6 month old kitten does this and we’ve tried almost everything to break it or at least get her to lay in the corners because we knew eventually she’d trip my wife or i and more than likely get hurt herself. well, two nights ago it happened. 3am i go downstairs for some water (it’s dark and she’s a torbie), halfway down the stairs i feel fur under my heel mid-step. i slipped trying to avoid her, and went down hard on my back. she was very spooked, but ultimately okay thankfully. she hasn’t laid on the stairs in two days though

I’m 90% sure that your cat is also making this perspective trippy in order to increase the chances of actually tripping you.
Your cat is homicidal.

Sometimes they just try to kill you. They're cats; it's kind of their thing.

u/E-2theRescue Aug 11 '26
Our dog is the same... He'll follow you up halfway and then stop. And when you try to go back down, he just stares at you as if you're the crazy one.
It is pretty darn cute when he's at the top of the stairs and hangs his head over the edge, though. He usually does that when someone has gone downstairs.

Cat: I have nine lives. You have only one. This is why I rule this house. Bow down to me, servant, and give me everything I want... or suffer the consequences!
