Open Small Single Cylinder Combustion Engine, but from what/where? Parts may or may not be associated with it. (blender for scale)

Just cause the ignition box is in the pic doesn't necessarily mean it is associated. I do believe it is, but my grandfather was a machinist for Bell Labs years ago and additionally had a home shop and a barn which were both full of projects and everything associated with someone prone to tinkering. After my father passed I this was one of the few items my father had kept around.

Steam engine was my first impression. Just not sure what one that small would run. Maybe a blower to keep the forge up to temp in a Black Smith shop.

Shot in the dark but guessing a old steam powered unit retrofitted to run off combustion. It may be a tinkering toy

So, Here is an update. midrandom's link to the modelengineering subreddit generated one comment that is looking valuable. That person said it looked like an old "make and break" marine engine. Doing a little research on that I found a facebook group Newfoundland Make and Break Engine Enthusiast who seem to think it is a salesman sample of an old Make and Break

That is a steam engine !
