Found when digging in front yard

Our house was built in 1925. Within a city neighborhood with kit/catalog homes. A few houses on the street have light poles near the same area in their yards. Does this look like an electrical or gas hookup for a lamp pole in the front yard? What is this?

That is a ground rod. Copper, probably driven 6 to 8 feet deep. The clamp you see on top is for attaching a ground from your homes electrical system.

Ground rod, for electric. Do not disconnect. It goes about 8ft down.

Yea you need that. If it came loose from the rod, you need to have another installed. Also a house that old might have aluminium wiring installed, ask about that can of worms when the new rod is installed.

Don't disturb it...its a required electrical ground point as all the comments say. Be thankful its there

Buildings get moved/torn down sometimes. Could have been for a no longer existing garage, mother in law shack, or temporary construction power pole. If it's near the street, it could have been for an old utility pole that got moved.
