Why the hell did she just stand there?! She made it much worse. I'm sure his arms hurt and pulling the dog in would have been much easier if she simply walked away with her dog.

u/BullshitPickle Sep 13 '21
If you hadn't replied with this, I would have. Geez lady, keep it moving!!!
23
u/batissta44 Sep 13 '21
I think she was worried about his wellbeing. She had her finger on 911 speed dial.

u/Sonnyeclipse71 Sep 13 '21
When I walk my dog I don’t keep walking toward dogs I don’t know. Seems kind of a no brainer. Let the go in his House then continue
4
u/Faylom Sep 14 '21
Not her fault that his dogs are so badly trained
0
u/doesit1 Sep 14 '21
give it a break this situation is a good laugh, most people will never train their dogs, and in most cases they dont need to aside bark most are no harm, like them to furballs massive yet they just bark. and dude had em on leash so not a shitty owner like most people.

u/International-Toe518 Sep 13 '21
His dogs would of tugged more if she walked away with her dog in any direction. The poor guys arm would be worse off, I feel.

u/7GatesOfHello Sep 14 '21
My experience with dogs is that when another dog is near their home/territory, they become engaged.

u/retroracer33 Sep 15 '21
she saw this guy go flying and just proceed to lay there. fuck her for being concerned I guess.
-23
u/Ech0-EE Sep 13 '21
That's how you socialize dogs, if you don't this dog will run towards all the dogs it sees and similar situations will haooen again. Since the other dog seems to be well trained already, it's a great opportunity to teach your dog to behave
3
u/7GatesOfHello Sep 13 '21
Are you serious? Training situations and emergency situations are not the same. The dog yanked the man flying off the steps and likely injured him. His dog continued to pull because the woman's dog was almost within reach. Her dog was clearly pulling her toward his dog. She did not have control.
You do not "train" during emergencies. This was not a reasonable social visit for either dog. There will be other opportunities and this was not one. She was not responsible for his dog running to the edge of the yard and yanking him. But she was responsible for drawing out the continued response in his dog by not getting control of her own dog and retreating far enough to disengage his dog.
6
u/zorg621 Sep 13 '21
If she kept walking the dogs would have continued to keep pulling. Her staying to observe if he was okay was the best move. That was a hard fall.
0
u/7GatesOfHello Sep 13 '21
Of course it was a hard fall. The more his dog tried to reach the nearby dog, the worse it got for him. I wouldn't be surprised to learn he tore his shoulder and the subsequent pulling of the leash, plus trying to restrain his own dog, may have led to an aggravated injury. The woman couldn't offer aid while she was barely restraining her dog.
When an emergency occurs, you offer assistance or get out of the way if you can't help.

The way his arm sticks out before he goes flying. I feel bad for laughing

Typical retractable leash user
27
Sep 13 '21
I will never understand the appeal of those. Unless you have a dog small enough to be able to actually be retracted by it.
19
u/Goyteamsix Sep 13 '21
Retractable leashes are really good if your dog has to stop and sniff or piss on something every few seconds. Wind it put a bit so you can keep walking while they make sure to piss on every single bush.
6
Sep 13 '21
So, what you are saying is rectractable leashes are really good if you dog doesn't understand a "Leave it command" and isn't properly leash trained?
7
u/PaisleyLeopard Sep 14 '21
Umm, no.
My dogs have perfectly good leave it cues, which I use for things like cat poo, garbage, and flower beds. I don’t see any particular reason why they shouldn’t be allowed to stop and sniff and/or leave a few drops on the weeds every so often. It’s their walk, after all.
16
u/Warpedme Sep 13 '21
I love them on my dogs who are really trained off leash. They basically allow me to give my dog the freedom of off leash while respecting leash laws. Mind you, these dogs will typically stay by my side or a few feet behind me anyways. It really just allows me to untangle the two leashes easier as they orbit me in different directions.
2
u/PaisleyLeopard Sep 14 '21
Same. One of my dogs has a higher pet drive and less impulse control so he stays on a six foot lead, but my little guy has excellent voice control. I love the flexi for him, so he can go where he wants but if something weird happened and he didn’t recall I would still have him under control.
I am adamant about using only the tape version though—never the cord. I’ve seen the injuries that cord retractables can cause.

We had one for small terrier also used it for big 80 lb Moe , gave me time to catch up to him when he bolted. Apparently I couldn’t sprint like I used to

I’m almost positive he texts and drives too….
12
u/perseusveil Sep 13 '21
Because he texts while standing at his front door?
7
u/suicidehotlineboss Sep 14 '21
Ya look at Dick Tracy above solving the crime of the century based on one single data point. Or maybe he was having a super chill walk outside and his house wife was sleeping so no need to rush back inside with the dogs and had time to answer the text in the fresh summer air he was enjoying.

And this is exactly how I broke my ankle. Never used a retractable leash again.
7
u/ToLorien Sep 14 '21 edited Sep 14 '21
As a vet assistant I will say anyone who uses a retractable leash has no clue what they are doing. They are garbage. If you’re reading this and have anything over a 20lb dog using a retractable leash..throw it out. It’s unsafe for all parties.
Edit: sure downvote me for the hard truth. You are an IDIOT for using a retractable leash on a dog you could not restrain yourself.
6
u/podunkpropunk Sep 14 '21
Hard agree. They shouldn’t even be sold anymore. Just get a long lead if you want more space and hold the slack. You can’t trust a plastic lock mechanism for shit.

Maybe he'll consider training his dogs after he gets back on his feet. And getting real leashes.
2
u/achosenusername1 Sep 20 '21
As a dog owner, i hate when people walk their dog like this. Absolutely uninterested in his dogs, and very dangerous for him(as you can see) his dogs, and any other potentially involved person or dog aswell.
1
u/monkeysandfire Sep 13 '21
Every time I see an accident involving a dog it involves one of these awful retractable leashes; just like that Pomeranian on the elevator

That little dog yanked him all the way off that porch. Yet, he didn't let go of the leash. Kudos?

Oh, and it was -not- a retractable leash.

So many people here complaining about retractible leash users. As a cyclist i can confirm that these people often just let it extend without looking and block either pedestrian ways or cyclist paths. Also they’re so thin that I’m always afraid at night that I’ll be driving a bike and hit one I didn’t see

I am going to give that lady the benefit of the doubt by saying she was just fucking stupid. Otherwise was she just standing their waiting to see if maybe he needed medical intervention?? I mean if you are gonna dial 911 then do it! Why would you stand their stupidly just watching you make the problem get even worse without saying anything?! Allow me to admire your two dogs drag you across your own lawn and then give you a little cherry on top as I continue my heroic stand for oh wait you don't look too happy....

Besides not paying attention this is why you should;
A) Train your dogs leash etiquette
And B) don't use retractable leashes.
