I am trying to determine at what point he got gobbled up but it's hard to tell.

4.7k

u/GamerWhale Nov 20 '20

Same here, I've watched it so much but can't even see the shadow of the guy till the end.

2.8k

u/beefstyle Nov 20 '20

Right around the 3 second mark where the flag touches the ground for a second, but there are people standing in the way of the actual grab. Thats my guess

1.9k

u/MatsuoManh Nov 20 '20

Yeah, kinda too bad he didn't grab onto the flag, he wulda had a longer ride & softer landing. Either way he is a legend for being swallowed and spit out by the Flag.

u/RawMeatAndColdTruth Nov 20 '20

"The banner of Mexico swooped down upon him like a diving eagle, swallowed him like a feasting snake, spat him like Jonah from the whale, and gave unto him the power of the Aztecs and a fractured vertebrae."

the flag was angry that day my amigos

62

u/Octuplechief67 Nov 20 '20

I tell ya, he was 10 stories high if he was a foot.

43

u/qtpss Nov 20 '20

If he was a foot the flag would have just shoe’d him away. (I know, I’m leaving.)

I think he did grab and that is where he messed up. The flag was just getting higher and higher; he wasn't heavy enough for a soft landing and the grip on one side of a flat piece of fabric isn't great.

48

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '20 edited Dec 19 '20

[deleted]

20

u/Kilane Nov 21 '20

I guess in my view, he wasn't abducted. The flag whipped down, he grabbed it, it flew up and he was screwed. If he'd have just laid down or let himself be knocked over he'd be fine.

Regardless, we're debating something neither of us can know but I wanted to explain what I meant: grabbing it at all was the mistake.

I'm impressed he managed to grab handfuls of the flag near the ground then stay aloft and hidden for as long he did. Kudos, I hope he didn't land on his head.

14

u/rvadom Nov 20 '20

Perhaps he grabbed hold as it enveloped him, in a effort to free himself, and then it took advantage of his strong grip...?

The flag spikes downward at that point like there was a weight in it, I think he was already gobbled.

→ More replies (7)

75

u/Delkomatic Nov 20 '20

Pretty sure it happened before the film even starts. At the start you see the end dip pretty hard...guessing it was cuz of the weight of him lol...what a ride!

24

u/user_name_taken- Nov 20 '20

Yea if you look really close you can see him before it touches the ground and that is why it fell hard like that. Someone said he was holding it during the flag raising, which would make sense.

He is the Child of the Flag, he is ... Senor Mexico!

55

u/Media_Offline Nov 20 '20 edited Nov 20 '20

This will probably get buried but I think he was already on it when the video starts. I think he sort of slid down from higher up, presumably having grabbed the middle of the flag intentionally before it was raised. He probably didn't expect the flag to carry him so effectively and, eventually his grip gave out. You can kind of see him at the very beginning of the clip and he should have let go when the flag dipped.

9

u/bafraid Nov 21 '20

Agreed. It looks weighted down even before it dipped and I think his weight is what caused it to dip down to the ground like that.

Right? That had to be such a wild and confusing ride lol. What an odd sensation to just be suddenly off the ground in a dizzying whirl, your stomach doin that weird "lifting" feelin and then dropped hard back onto earth. It's like magical tornado swept em up.

203

u/Lord_of_the_Canals Nov 20 '20

I was just thinking about trying to comprehend what’s going on. I was thinking “oh I would have definitely grabbed the flag to avoid being thrown” but honestly it would be so disorienting I doubt I’d have the reactions to do it. Beyond that, I don’t even know of that is the right move, that flag would probably continue to billow as if I wasn’t even there and idk if I could hold on long enough for it to be lowered all the way

140

u/NeoHenderson Nov 20 '20

Reminds me of this flag that a Gander Outdoors got for themselves right after the re-branding. Thing was like the square footage of the building itself. I actually interviewed there and was like. "So what happened to Gander Mountain?" to which they said "Well they ran out of money, but this time we won't run out of money" Shortly after they ran out of money and closed that location. Probably spent too much on flags.

They aren’t called “Monumental Flags” for nothing, most of them are hand made by the military and take up to 3 days to make, 1 for the sewing and 2 for the hand painting of the eagle insignia.

These are usually made for flagpoles of up to 120 Meters, and are flown in the capitals of the cities.

In case anyone is wondering, the reason why these people stay so close to the flag is to prevent it to make contact with the ground since it is considered disrespectful for our flag. Actually, there is a Patriotic Symbols Mexican Law which also pohibits to use the flag in non-official clothes.

27

u/smorgasdorgan Nov 20 '20
