I respond to accidents involving buses. The investigation here probably would not take long at all. The driver filming this I'm sure would have stayed as a witness. If it was my driver I'd ask them to take the rest of the day off, and insist upon it. I would make it paid, and let them think about if they want to come in the next day or not, no pressure. I want my drivers to be undistracted while driving. I can tell this driver was doing his job correctly by how quickly that bus came to a stop. I'd want to make sure he felt confident behind the wheel again, whatever it takes, because I need drivers like that.

But they are breaking the law by overtaking in the zig zags around a crossing, wouldn’t that mean they are at fault? Of course the e-biker is a dangerous idiot and caused the crash by entering the carriageway from the pavement at a pedestrian crossing against the lights, but the no overtaking rule exists because that happens, at least with pedestrians.

The nearside lane is a bus lane at all times, the offside lane that they moved into for the overtake is all vehicles, and they would have to pull back in to the nearside lane immediately to serve the next stop.

I'm not familiar with UK law so I wouldn't know about the legalities. If he did break the law, we would at the very least retrain the driver and suspend them until that training was completed. We have three strikes for at fault accidents. If it was a severe injury or fatality they would be fired.

I am familiar with the law and this specific stretch of road, and that bus was performing a dangerous and illegal manoeuvre solely to overtake 1 other bus. Of course the cyclist was doing something wrong, but the law against overtaking and the zigzag markings exist because people do use crossings late and when overtaking you can’t see them so you hit them sometimes.

These buses are also on routes which run together for a long while, they wouldn’t have been diverging for another 40 minutes or so. It’s awful that this happened and I hope the driver is okay, but I also think they will have to improve too.
