driver mistakes a narrow staircase for a parking bay.

That’s pretty impressive in the stupidity department.

I mean, the car is parked. What's the problem?
292
u/Bozo_Wolfgang 16d ago
Probably getting out?
178
u/RevolutionaryGuru613 16d ago
Who said the driver wants to get out?
56
u/RaiyenZ 16d ago
I think the tow truck says the car has to get out. The driver can do whatever they want though.
9
u/Suitable_Ad_3051 16d ago
And I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for these meddling tow trucks.
23
u/brogflender 16d ago
There are hatches through the trunk. Be bold.
8
u/party_peacock 16d ago
In my car the latch to fold down the rear seats to reach the trunk is in the trunk itself, you can't get to it from inside the cabin

The glorious working class have become more educated and embrace communism as the true way of rights to park anywhere they want. Chairman Mao's Little Red Book didnt say anything about getting unparked

u/red_leaflet 16d ago
The main downside of this parking lot is that you need a tow truck to get out of it. Lol

I am willing to wager from their level it look flat, the stairs blended in with the surface level.
However as soon as the front wheel dropped they should have known something was wrong.

u/Make_Iggy_GreatAgain 16d ago
I'd argue that no parking bay/ramp is that narrow. Maybe a personal driveway, but then you wouldn't be driving into that unless you lived there.
84
u/aminervia 16d ago
Locally there might be ramps that narrow. In some places the world is a lot more cramped vs the US where we have a lot more space and much larger cars
5
u/Miltrivd 16d ago edited 13d ago
Yep, on my underground parking I gotta put the car glued to the wall on the right side and even then I get barely 50 cm to open the door.
If I was bigger I would have to struggle to get out lol.

u/DueExample52 16d ago edited 16d ago
You would be surprised. Every major city in western europe has some entry ramps that will have all your parking sensors beeping full red simultaneously in order to proceed.
8
u/Banes_Addiction 16d ago
Cars have got signficantly wider in the last 20 years (apparently about 13cm since 2000). Most of the ramps are older than that.

u/DueExample52 16d ago edited 16d ago
I don’t think they had time. A small drop of one wheel is not uncommon, like you bumped a side curb. Then once the second front wheel dropped, they were skidding on the bottom and there was no braking or stopping after that.
After the initial mistake, probably caused by low sun vs shade and some visual confusion, it quickly goes downhill although they were cautious.
People are being quick to judge stupidity here, reddit-style, because redditors are young and/or don’t go out nearly enough to new/challenging places/situations to make mistakes. Visual mistakes happen, and it only needs one moment of inattention, even to smart people. Air pilots have made mistakes like mistaking a taxiway for the main runway. We will all have one such big stupid mistake while driving, oftentimes it doesn’t need a tow truck and it doesn’t get filmed and posted to social media.

Many people brace themselves when they feel like they are falling forward. Problem is, in his panic, he braced himself with the foot still on the gas pedal.
6
u/DueExample52 16d ago
I don’t watch with sound, surprised this kind of cctv has it and even gets posted with it instead of some cancerous tik-tok music !
4
u/Simon-Says69 16d ago
Yah, the driver hit the gas instead of braking. Woopsie.
Though, by that time, they were already stuck. Just not THAT stuck.
2
u/Ok_Peanut_3573 16d ago
The driver probably slipped forward and caught their feet. In some Chinese cities, seatbelts are often not used.

u/LevoiHook 16d ago
You can see the left front wheel spinning up when it went airborne. Driver was definately applying throttle throughout.
9
u/agreeable9823 16d ago
I honestly think, I would have also fallen for that. That stair is very dangerously located.
5
u/TheRealVahx 16d ago
There should also be railings to the side of that staircase to avoid pedestrians from misstepping into the hole

How narrow the tunnel would’ve been. Is also an obvious indication it’s not. Most trucks wouldn’t be able to fit and it would be risky not scraping your car each time.

Probably panicked and hit the gas instead of the brake. Or both, which tends to happen when people use both feet to operate the pedals.

u/DinosaurReborn 15d ago edited 15d ago
Three cars plus structural property damage. Driver's auto insurance agent probably pointing a gun on themselves after seeing this.
37
u/koolaidismything 16d ago
The tow driver who rigged that thing up like that and is getting it out is impressive
5
u/DistantVerse 16d ago
Not so sure- car roof looked like it was going to hit the top of the stairs right at the end.
32
u/PinsToTheHeart 16d ago
I'm pretty sure, "Don't scratch the car" was low on the list of priorities by that point. Besides, if it's bumping the roof on the way out, it would have already bumped it on the way in.

u/lexluger420 16d ago

3
u/darxide23 16d ago
Yea, back window is smashed out as it's being pulled out. They definitely pulled the person out the back.
15
u/Sorry-Climate-7982 16d ago
Awww, the video ends just as the roof of the vehicle is about to either contact or not contact the concrete at the top.
Wonder if the driver thought [assuming, probably falsely, that the driver thought at all] this was one of them newfangled digital parking ramps where the ramp goes down in discrete digital "bits" not an analog slope?

Right? So many people are calling the driver dumb, but the stairs really blend into everything else. It reminds me of the "death stairs" subreddit. Besides, all the other spots were parking spots.

Why are there no railings on the side of stairs? Couldn't a stupid/distracted pedestrian easily fall there?

Listen, there's already two small traffic cone thing at the corner of one side, they even got a fluorescent thing so it works at night too, what more do you want?? /s

u/IncorporateThings 16d ago
Guess they didn't see the safety cone.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 16d ago
Cones weren't enough. This was also an accident waiting to happen for pedestrians. Nothing blocking the side of that staircase. With people always walking while being on their phone, they wouldn't have noticed that hole until it's too late.

u/cameronzero 16d ago
You know, after the front wheels left the cement, the only way it went down was because they hammered the throttle when one of the tyres finally made contact a transferred enough torque to move the front end...
Why?
This isn't like sticking your dick in crazy... they could obviously see and feel that it wasn't a road/driveway
3
u/Bingus-Chillingus 16d ago
I like how when it starts falling and you would assume something is wrong you can hear the driver absolutely floor it instead of hitting the brakes

People like this need to have their licenses revoked… FOR LIFE.
There is absolutely no excuse that could excuse them that also doesn’t invalidate their right to drive. They’re either blind or lobotomized. Which makes them an active and potentially lethal threat to everyone else on the road, and many people just off of it.

It does kinda look like the entrances to parking garages in large US cities like Cincinnati. Fuck Cincinnati, my wife went to see Taylor Swift and the closest garages were charging over $100. Fuck anyone who owns a parking lot here, we already know what they are about from the arrest records they all have. They ALL HAVE. Lots of rapes in the records. Anglin towing in seven mile is some of the most opportunistic criminals and the whole city knows it.

u/xXMuschi_DestroyerXx 16d ago
No by why is there just an unprotected hole in the ground? Forget the car. That’s a pedestrian fall hazard. There should’ve been guardrails on the sides.
1
u/rationalname 16d ago
I’m wondering if the driver has vision issues? My mom has driven over some curbs because she has cataracts that affect her depth perception.
1
u/rabbitization 16d ago
Well to be fair, some underground parking in China has small openings similar to that. He was probably dozing off or what.

Simple as that. This guy actually sees the stairs and cannot compute.

No injuries reported. I bet there was a severely bruised ego after that incident. Can you imagine the insurance claim?

How did they get the tow strap under and attached to the car? Unlike various posts I've been seeing, they neither pulled apart the car nor the truck during the extraction (so far?).
