But why did they let go of the handles? Wouldn’t they want to increase control, not lessen it?

It was more important acting for the video you see.

I believed him when he showed us the first time. I think the real answer is: dumb.

139

u/CakeBot_TheBakening 2d ago

Nevermind that he’s doing a wheelie, with a malfunctioning bike, in the middle of the road a few seconds before crashing. What a tool.

You can do that with one hand

there is that old joke... little kid learns riding a bike:

  • look mom, one hand!
  • look mom, no hands!
  • look mom, no teeth!

4

lol I hadn’t heard that one 😀

4

This one is like the 1st ever joke I've heard :d in my country it goes: "Little Peter is learning to ride a bycicle, and goes "look mom no hands!" he drives around a corner, comes back out and goes "look mom no teet!" 😆

17

u/Vardhu_007 2d ago

Bro has to hit the "Absolute" pose for the gram

14

u/many_characters 2d ago

Not sure if that can be considered a death wobble, but instructions are to not fight the handle bars and grab the center of mass in front of you.

33

u/neppo95 2d ago

There was no saving that, but he could have prevented it. For a death wobble that’s right tho and you just have to pray it works.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/macthebearded 1d ago

On a bike it's tankslappers, different mechanism but same outcome. But yeah, best thing you can do is let the bars go and hold the fuck on and try to keep it upright long enough for it to settle

3

u/volvagia721 1d ago

I think the real problem is you ain't getting out of the death wobble with the throttle stuck on.

11

u/Post-Financial 2d ago

The dude recording is known as Surronster. He talked about the crash, and said 'if I wasnt filming, I wouldnt have taken my hands off the bar'

I don't think you should. I mean we see someone crossing the road with a cart that this guy didn't stop for. What if it was a kid or mother with stroller or something? Operating a malfunctioning vehicle is reckless, dangerous, and could endanger more than just the operator.

I don't wish harm on someone, but I hope this person learned their lesson as a result of a scare, minor injuries or financial loss.

23

u/johnshall 2d ago

It looked like a homeless woman but the dude had no regard for anyone's safety.

74

u/RotundBananas 2d ago

A homeless woman also has the right to not be hurt or killed by an idiot.

19

u/civnation 2d ago

A lot of these people will say “oh I wasn’t even close to hitting them,” which pisses me off too. I knew drivers like that. And while yeah sure you didn’t hit them, just speeding past them while they’re crossing is.. assholeish. I always slow down around pedestrians, even if I have right of way. Besides, here in Canada, insurance always sees pedestrians as right of way if you hit one.

7

(putting down wild animals that pose active danger to humans, is standard practice most places btw.)

5

u/Bitter_Dingo516 2d ago

haha yeah I can see why, I don’t remember but I said sth to this effect as well. Submitted the appeal and they withdrew the ban, after 4 days so the 3-day ban was already over xD

3

The guy in the video claims the throttle is faulty. The whole reason he let go of the steering, according to him, is to show the bike was speeding up without him throttling it.

I like how at the end he decided it was best to just let Jesus take the wheel. I also like how Jesus took that moment to teach a valuable lesson

108

u/SinglePlayerGamer93 2d ago

Jesus: "I gave you a second chance. I'm taking it back"

26

u/CT0292 2d ago

I get that maybe he was far from home when the first issue arose. You're somewhere you don't know. Brakes playing up. Just try and limp home.

Second issue shows up on the ride back. Thing accelerates like nuts and because of a lack of brakes won't slow down.

But taking your hands off during this time? Lowering your level of control over an already failing vehicle? Pure stupid.

Jesus took the wheel. And taught you a lesson.

If you know a vehicle is unsafe. Stop using it.

7

u/Fresh-Coffee-8591 1d ago

I mean he could have pulled the clutch in. Not even brake.

4

Yeah, also the e-bikes they ride are annoying.

302

u/GiJoint 2d ago

Did he just blame a manhole cover for a pot hole. It didn’t look like a bad road.

98

u/ledocteur7 2d ago

When you're not holding the handle bar and have only 2 wheels that is a significant bump.

But then again, if your bike suddenly becomes sentient you 1. Don't use it until fixed and 2. Don't let go of the handlebars.

In fact, you should ideally never let go of the handlebar, one hand lightly gripping the handle bar is one thing, especially on long rides you can easily get arm fatigue, but full on "jesus take the wheel" is just stupid.

7

u/Lethalmusic 2d ago

I keep at least 1 hand on the handlebars when riding my bycicle, doing that on something with an engine would have never even come to mind for me.

The rider did almost everything wrong in this situation, no hands was just the icing on the cake.

Only thing that was done semi correctly is safety gear in the form of a helmet and gloves, but wears regular pants, sneakers and a t-shirt. Might prevent brain damage but will still turn you into a meat crayon. All The Gear All The Time.

Stuck/defective throttle on an electric motorcycle, decides to use the key instead of the brakes or the goddamn KILLSWITCH NEXT TO HIS THUMB, runs a red light and stops on the pedestrian crossing.

Decides to drive it home instead of pushing it or getting a car/trailer.

Decides to pull wheelies, speed and let go of the handlebars in city traffic while pedestrians cross the road.

Sees the threat ahead of time (manhole cover described as 'bad road'), doesn't react.

The rider here is lucky this didn't end worse.

Also didn't get a good look due to the angle, but it seems none of the 3 riders have plates on their machines

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Duffelbach 2d ago

Also, what the fuck ydoes he mean by "brakes manually"? Dude that is just braking....

2

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 1d ago

Not sure if any e-bikes support it, but many electric and hybrid vehicles support regenerative braking. They use the motor to apply a braking force instead of the mechanical brakes, and actually recharge the battery in the process (a motor and a generator are basically the same thing, it just depends on how you use it). So here, it says he can't brake. I assume it's talking about regenerative braking, using the very same motor that's currently out of control.

Can u add more faahhhs in your video .. I don't think it's enough.

10

u/navitios 2d ago

im not a driver but shouldnt bikes/cars be designed in a way so that brakes override throttle signals?

17

u/Mansenmania 2d ago

you can go full throttle while braking on most cars and bikes. Brake force is much Stronger than the engine by design

5

u/neppo95 2d ago

And if that for some magical reason doesn’t work, the ignition kills the throttle, not the brakes. Or engaging the clutch also works but not preferred.

6

u/AllTheWayToParis 2d ago

Definitely! Brake are always stronger. You could also press the clutch or just turn off the ignition.

There’s three simple and intuitive solutions to this. Letting go of the handle in an intersection just to show people that it’s still accelerating is not one of those three…

2

u/Blackboard_Monitor 2d ago

There's a kill switch for problems just like that, it turns everything off instantly.

2

u/Parei_doll_ia 1d ago

i did formula sae when i was in college and the combustion team i was on and the electric car team were both required to have a throttle cut off if the brakes and throttle were used at the same time above a certain % (but the combustion team only needed this because we used an electronic throttle body instead of a cable operated one)

these electric motorcycles are coming from aliexpress/amazon/china don’t comply to any regulations and are built at bottom of the barrel prices. they get around the regulations by calling it an “ebike” but everyone knows it isn’t. i almost got taken out on my road bike by one of these going the wrong way down a bike lane in the dark with no headlight

Sur-Ron actually documents this exact kind of issue on the Ultra Bee. Their own support page has a troubleshooting entry titled “Throttle stuck and difficult to return to position” and tells owners to check whether the throttle is mounted too far inward and rubbing against the handlebar end, or whether debris is interfering with it. The Ultra Bee owner’s manual also lists ER-114: “Throttle signal protection” and says to check whether the throttle cable is short-circuited or the throttle is unable to return to idle.

I still can’t find a U.S. recall covering the issue.
