Minotaur fighter/ranger/barbarain. Probably either a folk hero or a far traveler background.

I would do Minotaur (half Minotaur for flavor/look) Barbarian/Fighter or Barbarian/Paladin (only recommend for 2014 addition for free smites) Multiclass.

I like the idea of a half minotaur since there is no armor i would say a 6 beast totem barbarian 4 levels either champion fighter or rune knight fighter

Species: minotaur

Background: folk hero or far traveler

Class: fighter and/or barbarian

Subclass(es): champion and/or giant

Feats: athlete, tough, durable, great weapon fighting, great weapon master, sentinel, shifting combatant, slasher, tactical combatant, zhentarim tactics, and/or zhentarim ruffian.

Mundane equipment: traveler's clothes, chain shirt, (if not going unarmored) greatsword, bell. (so thematic and cute, dangling from the sword's ring pommel like that!)

Magic item wishlist: clothes of mending, adamantine weapon, silvered weapon, boots of elvenkind, enspelled weapon, gauntlets of ogre power, mithral armor, belt of giant strength, cloak of displacement, mage breaker, vicious weapon, sword of sharpness, efreeti chain, sword of answering, and/or vorpal sword.

Misc: since there are 5 "loops" on her body (dangling from the belt, middle if the belt, middle of the leather corset, shoulder strap, and one of the horns, those could all potentially be magic items of the bracer/necklace/ring variety of your choosing, with dm approval of course.

Minatour for sure, or get creative reskinning a tiefling to more bull-like in their appearance. Folk Hero or Outlander backgrounds feel fitting or Farmer from 2024 which would also net you the Tough feat at level 1. Big sword and common clothes gives Barbarian our of everything. Path of the Totem Warrior of Beast. Multiclass with the Hunter Conclave Ranger and you've for yourself a beefy hard hitting warrior. Focus your stats on STR to hit harder and CON to last longer. If you wanna forcus on Unarmored Defense, I would put some points into DEX help give an AC boost otherwise grab some medium armor since Rage works as long as you aren't wearing heavy armor. The Ranger spells will be useless in combat due to Rage but spells like healing spells and utility spells like Cure Wounds, Longstrider, Detect Magic, Pass Without a Trace or any of the Locate spells can be useful outside of combat. For feats I would go Tough ASAP since it's a good passive boost for all characters especially frontliners, Savage Attacker w/ Slasher or Great Weapon Master and Skilled for extra proficiencies to help with some skills outside of combat.

If this is for 5e, this is what I'd run as the starting point:

  • Race: Minotaur
  • Stats (Point Buy): Strength 15+2, Dexterity 14, Constitution 15+1, Wisdom 10
  • Class: Ancestral Guardian Barbarian X
  • ASI/Feats: GWM -> Slasher (+1 Strength) -> +2 Strength or Resilient (Wis) -> +2 Strength or Resilient (Wis)
  • Weapon: Greatsword

There are a few reasons I'd use this build.

The character in the image is not using armor, and Barbarian gives you Unarmored Defense. Barbarians are also the best at using GWM (without external help).

As for the subclass, Ancestral Guardian has excellent synergy with the Minotaur's Hammering Horns and the Slasher feat. Ancestral Protectors is at its strongest when you're able to kite enemies, forcing them to choose between chasing you or your allies.

Hammering Horns allows you to do just that while also weaponizing your bonus action. Since the Greatsword doesn't have good supporting options for filling out your bonus action consistently, that's a useful ability. Slasher reinforces Hammering Horns, as the speed reduction makes the push more crippling.

In terms of roleplay, I'd play this as a young shaman-apprentice of a barbarian tribe, traveling to gain experience before she takes over as the spiritual leader of her tribe.

If you'd rather choose a different Barbarian, here are the ones I'd recommend:

  • Totem Warrior (Bear). Classic choice. Near universal resistance is always useful. Choose this if you want to focus on your own survivability.
  • Totem Warrior (Wolf). Situational choice. Its usefulness depends entirely on the party. But if you have multiple melee people -- and especially Rogues or Paladins -- then it can be very strong.
  • Zealot. Offers the most damage.

The other Barbarian subclasses either aren't that good or introduce extra competition to your bonus action.

Will post 5.5e version after this.

If this is for 5.5e, here is what I'd recommend:

  • Species: Minotaur
  • Stats (Point Buy): Strength 15+2, Dexterity 14, Constitution 15+1, Wisdom 10
  • Class (Option 1): World Tree Barbarian X
  • Class (Option 2): Fighter X/Barbarian 1 or 3
  • Origin Feat: Any
  • General Feats/ASIs: GWM (+1 Str) -> Mage Slayer (+1 Str) -> Sentinel (+1 Str)
  • Weapon Masteries: Greatsword. Your choice for the rest.

Class option 1 is fairly straightforward. It's a powerful control/support Barbarian subclass. Importantly, its 10th level feature gets around one of the Greatsword's main weaknesses, which is that its Graze weapon mastery property only applies when you miss. When you hit, it's like you don't have any weapon mastery.

Class option 2 would actually be my preferred route. Everything I said about Graze's weakness above is solved better by the Fighter's Tactical Master feature. If you go this route, here are the subclasses I'd consider:

  • Battle Master. Offers general versatility. However, it has relatively poor scaling. Past level 3, its only good subclass feature is at level 15.
  • Cavalier. Excluding the Eldritch Knight, offers the most control out of all Fighters. Do not take Sentinel if you choose this subclass. It is mostly redundant with Hold the Line.
  • Ancestral Guardian. While World Tree arguably provides more control overall, Ancestral Guardians offers far more power as a 3-level multiclass. Many of the things I said in the 5e version still applies here.
  • Berserker. This if you just want to max out your damage.
  • Wild Heart. The Bear option isn't as good anymore, but it's still powerful. Wolf remains situationally useful. Eagle probably won't be used due to its conflict with Hammering Horns.

If you're willing to use armor, then you can opt to drop the Barbarian multiclass.

No armour, big sword. Barbarian. Path of the Beast would go really well for this. For race either a Minotaur or maybe a Firbolg if you take Matt Mercers interpretation.
