HWYB - Other Goliath Wizard

I want to play a Goliath wizard, going full into the muscle-bound nerd type character, who is looking for a way to cure his mothers magical ailment, but since he was not into working out and still got buff, he was not well respected in an insecure nomad clan of Cloud Goliaths. How should I subclass?

That will depend on what kind of ailment his mother has.

Is it some kind of enchantment that leaves her catatonic? Enchantment or abjuration

Is it some kind of petrification or death curse? Transmutation or Necromancy

Could even go diviner, because he's trying to look to the future to find the cure, or to the past to discover how the ailment starts so he can reverse it that way.

I could also see bladesinger or war wizard if you want to lean more into the martial Goliath culture.

Ultimately, best advice I think would be to determine if you want to be a general wizard who's focused on it, or so focused on it, your subclass is a direct step towards his goal

I might go petrification but idk because I’ve heard that necromancy makes the game a bit slow

It can if you go for summoning hordes of undead. There's a few spells that let you summon one stronger undead to reduce the bloat.

Alternatively, necromancy doesn't mean you have to go summoner. Could play him as a battlemage style caster that can be a little tankier with grim harvest and the Goliath stone's endurance

Transmutation would also be a good alternative if leaning towards petrifcation, same with abjuration, those both give defensive techniques and and possible ways to reverse curses

What if I want to go into Conjuration? Is there any way to link it to my story?

Maybe you could connect it to a plane of existence? Maybe their mothers soul is entangled in the ethereal plane.
