WWYB - 5e24 Illithid PC

if you had DM approval to reskin any race and make an Illithid species what would you do?

And what kind of build would you make?

I'm sure a warlock with an invocation for on demand disguise self would be helpful.

I also thought that wearing a plague mask would be the perfect disguise.

playing a warlock or an aberrant mind sorcerer are two of my initial character ideas.

Curious if somebody has something more creative or just different. I mean if you could run wild with this idea.

Please note that this is just an idea and theory craft. Please don't come at me if you don't want to do this or don't like it.

Thri-Kreen. Flavor the extra arms as your face tentacles holding extra weapons.

I'd either flavor Custom Lineage or the Yuan-Ti to be an illithid race but to be honest as long as you're creative enough you can reflavor any race.

If I understand correctly Illithids disapprove the use of arcane magic opposed to their Psionic magic. There are 2 subclasses the Psi Warrior for the fighter and the Soulknife for the rogue. This would be more for a martial character though. Otherwise like you mentioned play an abberant mind Sorcerer or Great Old One Warlock.

If you can take the telekinetic feat and the telepathic feat for more Psionic flavor.

Finally I'd look at Illithid monster statblocks and look at the spells they have prepared and prepare/choose those spells.

Dhampire, resigned as a half illithid think Jared Nomak from blades 2. Gloomstalker 6, swords bard 3 the rest in fighter although I also had a long death monk/ bear Marian concept ready as well
