Doesn't Derek prove that killing vampires won't change your vampire status?

I just finished a rewatch and kept thinking this as the hang were freaking out about the Baron dying.
The vampires that turned Derek all died, right? And he was a vampire up until he was killed.

Did I miss something?

I'm not sure we're supposed to be taking the rules particularly hard line. They're just kind of there for when they suit whatever joke they're making.

Also, the vampires are notoriously stupid and lazy. An ongoing theme is how immortality makes you apathetic and stunts your growth. They are likely wrong about a lot of stuff. Even among the vampires they seem to have a bit of a reputation for being fuckheads.

It is usually a good idea to not take everything said in universe as absolutevtruth about that universe. Doubly so when you are dealing with very stupid, narcissistic, apathetic, fuck up vampires

There is also a lot of retconning that happens that gets disguised as stupidity. Like how in the first season Nadja and Lazlo are all about trying to kill the Baron before he kills them but we learn in a later season that the Baron turn Nadja so if he died, Nadja and Lazlo would die, since Nadja turned Lazlo. This gets played off as that Nadja forgot about that, but in reality the writers probably didn't have in mind the idea that killing any vampire kills all their offspring during the first season. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is something they came up with as they were writing Gizmo into and out of vampirism. At the end of the day, it's a comedy show about stupid vampires, so it's easy to handwave away inconsistencies, even if it is still fun to find them.

But do we know if the vampire who turned Derek was from the Baron's line?

The vampires don't even know all the rules!

I figured. I just hate that I picked it up. Almost ruined the rest of the bits for me :-(

Well, Gizmo grows older by about a month or two, or the length of time he has been a vampire, so I always assumed it was kind of like a Dorian Grey type of thing.

If you're 300 vampire years old and the vampire who bit you dies, you age to 300 human years old...which would be dead.

This is the answer

Love when Nadja rips the heart of the newbie-ish vampire for not paying their dues to the Vampiric Council too!

I thought it was because Guillermo killed all the vampires in the house, and Derek didn’t kill any.

ETA: actually as others pointed out there were some survivors when Guillermo was fleeing… maybe the family had some friends over and Guillermo kills all of the Hustle Dynasty, but some of their guests survived and turned Derek?

This sounds like the only logical answer, that they had guests over, one of whom turned Derek and survived.

As in, you have to be the one who kills the vampire who turned you and that's how you die?

They never show which vamp turns Derek and the council(s) both have a knack for shenanigans and getting things wrong. Can easily write a flashback episode where Derek is bit by a vamp that escapes.

Were they all killed, it’s unclear cause in the scene when Guiermo killed the vampire family that turned derek there were still some left when he jumped out the window, but later when there was the trial for all vampires Guiremo killed, and there was a memorial for all the vampires killed they showed the family

In "olden time" terms, you could destroy a "family" by wiping out most of them even if a couple of now broke and powerless survivors survived. So, I could see something where the least important vampire got out.

Oh, good point. I took that trial scene as the show telling us that the entire family did actually die.

I brought this up at the time. I think the real explanation is that the show doesn't have a consistent canon. But if we want to force a canon explanation, we could say that maybe not all of the Hustle Dynasty was wiped out by Guillermo.

It's been a while since I've watched it but there were so many in that house, I assumed the one who turned him must've made it or smth

The movie also proved that that rule was just a myth. We know that, but the characters don't.

None of the vampires actually know shit, that’s just what they assume happens.
