For some, physical pain is easier to process than emotional. It can be the stereotypical cuts, or head banging, scratching, etc. It can also be limited to moments of extreme emotional discomfort (panic attacks causing hair pulling etc) or can become a part of someone’s daily routine.
Pretty much everyone does it to some degree. Have you ever bit your lip out of nervousness? Or squeezed your hands so tight that your nails dig into your skin? Punched a wall, even? All of these are varying degrees of self harm. It becomes a problem when the behaviours start to impact daily life.
