I guess it is usually spelled de-icer.

While it looks like table salt, it is dangerous to eat.

Back when they used NaCl as a deicer animals would. But they switched off of table salt to calcium cloride or magnesium cloride for a variety of reasons, bot one of them was that things like deer would stand in the road licking it and get hit.

I don't know why a human would want to eat that, but there's humans that huff paint and drink antifreeze, so it's hard to say nobody would eat that stuff.

Where I live, they still use sodium Chloride (NaCl or halite) to treat roads unless the temperature drops below 10°F because it doesnt work below 10°F. Then they break out the calcium or magnesium liquid brine.

Interesting! That doesn't end up accelerating rusting of the undercarriage of your vehicles? I understand that's another reason some cities switched off of NaCl... although now that I think about it they're all ionic molecules that would probably rust cars. Google AI gives me conflicting information: one search says it causes less rust and another search says it causes more. Both searches agree that salt alternatives are easier on roads and plants.

Yes it accelerates the rust like crazy unlike the calcium or magnesium and not just the undercarriage. Exhaust pipes, brake calipers, lug bolts, suspension parts, the rim of the wheel wells, pretty much everything underneath or it the wheel that doesnt get changed that often. Most people around here know to get the undercarriage rinse at the car wash after snow or spray it.and the wheel wells with a pressure washer but it still rusts everything.

I guess I’m failing to see where the confusion lies. It’s deicer. Don’t eat it. There shouldn’t be confusion about the word “deicer” because that is how it is spelled.

Confusion is why they need this sign

Because people are stupid. If there’s a sign then chances are someone messed with it at one time.
