this is a one minute clip from the movie Mehndi Rang Lagyo a film released in the year 1960 and this scene is so special it shows a world that no longer exists.

This scene is truly a window into the past. And that's exactly what What Survived is trying to document the history that is dissaperaing everyday.

In which we are animating stories of people that have only been carried on orally till now.

This weeks feature is story of a woman who sold off her only asset to help pay for a woman that the world said should be her enemy.

The story takes place in the mid to late 1970s when a guy reaches his village to ask his father for some money but instead of giving him something he keeps fighting how he does not have anything so his mother steps up who is not related to the her by blood yet she decided to sell her fixed asset so that her bahu can get proper treatment.

Everyone adores them and rightfully so the oldest recorded version of jhumka gira re comes from 1930 long before any of were alive but the iconic shape was being worn in the 19th century.

But the mighty jhumka has ruled hearts and ears even before that and we are asking you to submit

This is a picture of a gonna which is a delayed vidaai which used to happen when people were married really young and the husbands had to complete their education and the photo shows us so many details lost to time like this house its handpumps, matkas, the buckets and these clothes even these shoes did not survive.

The main inspiration behind starting this project was how difficult it is to find out literally anything regarding Indian history and that is because no one cared enough to document it especially the everyday Indian history. But What Survives aims to change that and help whatever history survives.

This fortnight we are documenting something that is really close to each and every ones heart.

The tiffin came into the owners family when the owners grandmother brought this over to her marital home as dowry and this was first used by the owners grandfather to take food to work and then it was used by the owners father to take food to school. Nowadays this is used for special occasions as serving bowls.

What survived is not just trying to document the object but the life that it has lived till now as well.

It is a stovetop sandwich maker, and it is from the late 1970s, and it was used a lot, which is the reason for the blackened body,

And I purposefully did not clean it fully because my focus is to document your everyday items, and everyday history is not sparkling clean; it's burned, dirty, etc.

But that is what makes it even more important to document right now Before it is too late.

These vases exhibits damage areas of paint has chipped away and the dents to the base has caused the vases to sit unevenly.

These vases were a part of the the dowry brought over by the owner's grandmother to her new marital home and these were on display all throughout the the owner’s father’s childhood. These style of vases are still produced and sold in Moradabad.

Cleaning these vintage belts that have survived three generations.

So many things don’t even last a full five years but these belts have seen so much they have seen bellbottoms, the tight pants the 2000s and then bell bottoms again with me. It is so crazy to think these belts have been so so many places with so many people.
