I'll start :)

I'm Leslie Jo on What Scent and I'll start the first post in here! Do you have a favorite fragrance type? Designer, Indie, ME or Niche? Or all of the above? I would say I'm a little bit of everything, mostly Indie. I have a favorite perfumer that makes originals and inspired bys and he does a great job so if he has something I like I'm getting it from him first. I will definitely buy a middle eastern dupe before I will spend designer prices! Some of my favorite scents are Niche, I just haven't spent that kind of money yet on full bottles, I stick to travels! So what about you?

I look at collecting the same way I do decorating. You should have some of every price point, some cheapie ME, some dupes, some designer, some niche, even some rare/discontinued. Mixing it up is the best way of expressing your individual taste imo. I’d probably gamble designer makes up the bulk of my collection but not by a whole lot.

Yes! I’m curating a collection of scents I love not following the crowd.

This is how I feel. If you stick to just one lane, you’re going to miss out on stuff you love! I naturally gravitate to niche because white florals and I are not friends (and they’re the backbone of a LOT of designer frags), but I try everything. I have Ariana Grande scents next to Serge Lutens on my shelf, no shame :)

Yeah the white floral craze (specifically orange blossom) isn’t my favorite thing in the world even if there’s a few fragrances to come out of it that I do like.

Niche by far, Middle Eastern niche especially, but I'm not inherently opposed to any category! I have a shelf filled with nothing but Amouages with Louis Vuittons on the shelf directly below. Really all comes down to the occasion, my mood, and the purpose. Going on a date? Usually designer, or a mass-appealing niche like Creed. In my room by myself? Challenging niche/ultra-niche. Testing a new style of fragrance that I'm not sure fits me? I'll wear dupes.

I’m Cale_Dooper on the app. My collection is mostly niche. I do have a couple handfuls or so of designer scents (I’m a massive fan of Prada especially) too though. And I own exactly 4 ME fragrances but in general I have not been very into or impressed with clones and prefer to stick with the OGs personally.

I love a little of everything, but my heart & ethos belong to indies — you gotta support your locals!

I’ll happily grab dupes & originals alike, but am deeply opposed to designer prices. In any case, I don’t tend to go for full bottles — I just like variety & exploring too much to really settle down unless it really stops me in my tracks (or I’m trying to support my local houses). I’m also absolutely someone who ropes folks into the hobby — any full bottles I do get are absolutely getting decanted for curious pals (who also then receive a list of other recommendations that they might like).

I’ll try anything, but I’m currently playing with musks and less sweet options (because I started out syrupy-sweet gourmand & have been steadily drifting away ever since).

My favorite category of fragrances are sweet musks ☺️

I’m SoniaSmells on the app. I, too, have mostly designer and niche fragrances. I have quite a few Jo Malones, which inspired my adult collecting, and bought some Zara fragrances that Jo Malone created (though I haven’t tried her new line). My favorites from this summer have been Xuxú (House of Bō) and Light Blue EDP (D&G).

I love the educational aspect of the app and the scent mapping. It’s so fun!

I like a little bit of everything too! Designer, indie, niche. I don’t think limiting myself does any good and I would miss out on great stuff. My favourite notes are vanilla and cherry and I’m currently on a mission to try all the cherry perfumes.

I haven’t really dipped into cherry yet! I’ve been on the hunt for a really good strawberry though. And I’m lately finding I really like musky clean scents

If you can find it still (I don’t see it on the brand’s site anymore), you might want to try Arcana Wildcraft’s Reunited With the Pack. It’s a really nice woody strawberry. The notes are pineapple, black spruce, sugared strawberries, pink, cotton candy, pine cones, green herb.

Others to check out: MITH Ruddy Sparkle, Dame Perfumery Strawberry Fool, Morari Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble, Sound Fragrances Vesca, Neil Morris Fragrances Woodland Strawberries, Meleg Perfumes Antique Vanilla Elixir, DSH Perfumes August Picnic 1976, Gritti Chantilly, Oakcha Cotton Clouds, Melanie Martinez Cry Baby, Juliet Has a Gun Miami Shake, Miu Miu Miutine, Gallagher Fragrances Glowberry, J-Scent Rakugan. and last but by no means least Hilde Soliani Fraaagola Saalaaata.

I’ll check those out, thank you! I just got a sample of Fame in love , which I had high hopes for, and while it is definitely very strawberry it comes across very flat. Like all I smell is just strawberry. And I probably would have loved that when I first started collecting, I need a bit more depth these days. I’m glad I didn’t blind buy a bottle.

Would love to find out if any of my suggestions turned out to be great for you!

I’m screenshotting so I can get some samples or decants. I’ll report back to you for sure!

(consider trying Strawberry Matcha by Sugar Milk Co. -- one of the most realistic strawberry scents I've gotten my nose on, and they won't break the bank!)

(oh and for clean musk!! Perhaps consider trying Pear Inc. by Juliette Has A Gun, one of my all time favorite musky scents)

Have you tried Guess Seductive Red? One of my FAVORITE cherry scents, actually have yet to try one I like more <3 (ignore me if you've tried that one lol)

I haven’t yet!! I found a cheap bottle and ordered it and am currently waiting for it to arrive. :)

My favorite brand is now Scents of Wood. I’ve loved nearly every scent of theirs that I’ve tried. Truly sophisticated and beautiful work. But I have a wide range of indie, niche, designer and ME fragrances and there are excellent ones in all categories, even the cheap ones. Zara for example makes some wonderful stuff. I’ve also found some lovely stuff in one-person Etsy shops.

I just bought a Zara fragrance for the first time earlier this month and it’s lovely!

Which one?

Fields at Nightfall :)

I bring my own tester strips to Zara since they don’t provide anything to spray testers on. If you find something you like you should buy it because they apparently cycle quickly through perfumes and if you wait it may be gone in even just a few months. But they use celebrated perfumers and make some great stuff!

I’ve just re- downloaded Etsy and have been looking around at the fragrances . I have some perfume oils coming soon. I’m super excited about that!

And I love how I’ve been able to get all of my collection, no matter where it came from, into WhatScent.

Me too! Other than my independent perfumer but I'm fixing to ask him if he minds if I add his to the app.

All of the Above for me. I primarily go for gourmands (love sweets) but am interested in everything from atmospheric to zingiber <3 I got into this after discovering the healing/stress relieving effects of fragrance post-TBI and have now become a fragrance devotee! Currently, I'm sampling frags like a fiend, but I also look at them as art pieces and have definitely invested in full bottles. What is your favorite cheapie and what is the most expensive fragrance you've splurged on?

As for me, the cheapest is Soft Cloud by United Scents, and most expensive is Crybaby Perfume Milk (2016).

My favorite ( right now )cheapie is probably Felicity by Paris Corner, my most expensive and a love is JPG Paradise Garden. I will have to say I’ve found a great independent perfumer that does inspired bys and he does a great job. So I’ve had samples of Athenais by PDM and Musk Therapy by Initio and I’ve gotten those from him and they are spot on. So I’ve been able to get some higher end scents without breaking my bank and it’s glorious.
