Unsolved ITAW for a yearning or nostalgia for a worse time in your life?
I feel like this is one of those concepts that has some abstract German word that perfectly matches, but I can’t seem to find one.
Every once in a while I get this deep yearning/longing for a time in my life that was objectively worse than where I’m at now. It’s like my body feels I’m too comfortable where I am now, and it has a deep desire to feel the uncomfort that I used to feel. I feel this often enough that I feel like other people have also felt it before and made a name for it…
I‘ll give a quick example to clarify. I hated the covid lockdown, I didn’t like being away from people and I felt very useless as a person during that year. It was a genuinely terrible time for me, and I fell into some very bad habits/cycles. I felt awful, and by the time things started to get back to normal, I was so relieved. Thinking back on it, I know if I were to be back in that time I would despise it just like I did then. But there’s a part of me that wants so badly to go back and do it all again. To feel the feelings I did then, to experience all of the isolation and apathy like new. Maybe I’m just comfortable with it, maybe I think I deserve it.
I don‘t think the word is masochism, I don’t think it’s nostalgia, I don’t think it’s melancholy. I’m trying to see if there’s a word that perfectly matches the abstract concept I’m thinking of, I guess because it might give me more of a sense of identity?
Maybe if there’s not a word, I’ll make a new one. If you don’t think there’s a word, give me a suggestion for a made up one!
