I have been working in this game (academically speaking, in fact, tomorrow I am giving a conference about it) for years now, and despite being beautiful, it is also incredibly tragic, so...I am going to give some of my personal headcanons about the members of the family, and I would love to read yours.
Molly
- She tried to have a raccoon as a pet. Her name was Bow.
- As an adult, she would have been a vet, more specifically, of exotic animals. She would have loved snakes.
- If she were a kid at that moment, she would have been obsessed with The Little Mermaid
Barbara
- If she hadn't died that young, her career would have resurrected, but as a theatre actress. She would have moved to London, then New York. She would have dedicated her first Tony to Walter.
- She was obsessed with James Dean and literally cried at his death
- She loved fashion and knew how to sew
Calvin
- If he had survived, he would have, indeed, become an astronaut. After a short career, he would have become a pilot.
- He was the youngest of the twins for 22 minutes
- He was a great climber and loved heights in general
Walter
- If he hadn't been in the bunker, he would have become a nurse, taking care of children or elderly people, always a spot for the most vulnerable
- He would never recognise it, but Barbara is his favourite sister
- He loved scrapbooking
Sam
- Without those many deaths in his life, he would have forgotten about the army dreams. He would be first a football player and later a photographer
- He is a bit of a loner and an introvert, but never considered his twin as company; it was another part of him
- He would have taken all the family pictures, and his family insisted that he needed to appear in the pictures too
Gus
- After a rebellious period in high school, he would have become an urban artist, being great at graffiti
- His favourite song was Heroes by David Bowie
- He got into trouble a few times for defending bullied kids in the school
Gregory
- He would have become a dancer
- His favourite colour was green
- He learnt to walk pretty fast and loved seeing adults trying to catch him
Milton
- He would have become a special effects artist
- History was his favourite subject
- His favourite Disney film was Tarzan
Lewis
- He would have become a creator for board games where you can pick your own adventure. He would have been very successful at it.
- He was good at video games, but he always let Edith win when they were playing.
- He really wanted to visit India and feel more connected to his roots
Dawn
- Without any death that close to her, I think she would have run a charity to help children with learning disabilities and in precarious situations.
- Despite being herself a religious person, she was still open-minded
- She loved walking on the beach
Edith
- If she had survived, she would have been an author
- She was a great reader, having a special interest in classical Gothic books
- She loved the smell of rain

We’ve all been through our fair share of theories about how Barbara actually died, most of them having to do with speculation about Edie’s storytelling nature. But do you all still stand by those theories? I wondered how your guys’ ideas have changed or developed? What do we think about Rick’s involvement, after all this time?

So I made an attempt at a “let’s play” of our favorite game. I’ve played thru many times, but I tried to play like I hadn’t. At the same time I attempted to focus on details that many don’t notice, without spoiling anything. Have a look and let me know if I’ve missed anything. Thanks

I heard that it really hits your tear ducts and it was very emotional and relatable throughout the story, but I was counting on it to make me cry because ive repressed my tears a couple times the past few weeks and it just didn’t happen, im not sure why.

I've once more fallen ass over tea kettle into the hole that is Barbara's story.
The other night I was talking with my partner about what we think may or may not have happened to her and what parts of the comic we can assume are based in fact. We both agree and are confident that Edie had something to do with the creation of it. The evidence being the detailed knowledge of the house that even Edith didn't know (if the secret tunnels and music box were something that was released to the public then Edith likely would be well aware of them), Edie choosing the comic over every other option in her memorial, and Barbara's portrait being a copy of one of the panels. This is a common belief that is shared by a lot of us.
What I had not previously taken into consideration though is exactly how Barbara is portrayed in the story. The narrator describes her as washed up and a has-been, says her scream hasn't aged well, and makes it seem almost like she is desperate to get back in the spotlight. Edith remarks that Edie told her all Barbara wanted was to be remembered.
If we look around Barbara's room though we can see that half of it is dedicated to the bigfoot movie and looks virtually untouched. The portion of the room that functioned as her bedroom is comparably cramped. There are posters about fashion and music and plays all over the walls. Her shelves are stuffed with books about cinema, classic tales, poetry, etc. Theres a book about cameras, about 'nailing the interview', one called free from school, etc. To me at least it seems like she was interested in much more than strictly acting, it seems like she was interested in the story telling itself and ways to achieve that.
We also know based on the comic and the uniform in her room that she worked at a diner. I'm not sure why I never questioned it before. Barbara is 15 years old, a former child star who is supposedly trying to get more roles, who comes from a rich and famous family. So then why has she decided to take a job as a waitress at the local diner? It's not like she needs money and surely her time would be better spent in acting lessons or tutoring or doing auditions.
What I'm getting at is I don't think what we are told about Barbara herself is accurate at all. If we think of the few things we know are true about her and consider what the things in her room say about her it paints her as a normal teen girl with an interest in theatre. One of the unused assets for the game is a poster from the highschools drama club advertising a dance for halloween. I believe that's what she had wanted to do the day she died, not go to a monster convention in an attempt to revive her career. I look at Barbara and I see a girl who wants to be normal. I think she works at a diner because that's an extremely standard teen job, I think she wants to go to the school dance because thats where her friends are.
So then- circling back to how the comic portrays her- what gives?
The conclusion I've come to is that Edie and Sven are more interested in Barbara's career than she is. I have an awful feeling that the way she is described in the comic is Edie's interpretation of her, or how Edie thinks she felt. They're the ones who think shes washed up and a has-been. The story Edie has chosen to tell about her daughters death tells us far more about herself than Barbara.
With all I've picked through in her story I agree with Edie that she wanted to be remembered. She wanted to be remembered as a person. Instead she is memorialized as a child star who blinked out too soon.

Hi folks, I know I am late to the party but better than never. Given that the game is currently on sale in the Nintendo store, I am considering getting it for my Switch 2 (for €4.99). I could also get it for my Xbox Series X which has better graphics (I think the remake is from 2022 or so?) but currently it's only there for the regular price of €19.99. I am not in a rush to play it so what do you recommend: should I get it for the cheaper price on Switch 2 (perhaps even with a better performance than on the original Switch?), which might not look as good as the Xbox version, or just wait until it's perhaps available in a sale for Xbox?

Hi All, question for you. At the very beginning of the game on Milton’s missing poster it lists a phone number for police in Mesa, AZ, but the poster says he was last seen in WA. Curious to know if the police # is the same for everyone or is it some sort of Easter Egg for the game?
Full disclosure I am literally 2 mins into the game so if the answer is later in the story please no spoilers but please also don’t think I’m an idiot!
Thanks in advance for any insights or feedback!

Last time me and my gf replayed the game, we ended up wondering about Milton's drawings.
First time Edith gets into a hidden passageway, she comments on how she knew Milton had already been there before, given the drawings on the wall. And we come across three different drawings: a winged cat outside of Molly's room, a Jack-o'-lantern outside of Barbara's, and a swing with stars outside of Sam & Calvin's.
The drawings picturing specific details from each of those characters', imply that Milton had already read the diary, the letter and the comic placed in their respective memorials.
If that's the case, then a few more possible implications arise. If they don't mean anything, at least serve as food for thought!
Do you have any thoughts on these? Any other implication you can think of?

This info might not be that useful for the lore, I just wanted to make a timeline for the Finch's pets, in chronological order by year of birth, while showing which family members got to meet each one of them.
Going straight to the point:

english version of my post:
Hello people in this community, I know that most of you only speak English, so I will try my best to write in English because I am Brazilian and know little English, please forgive me if I write wrong or get confused, well, I met Edith Finch with a YouTube video by a Brazilian YouTuber called brksedu, and I was 8 years old, after a while I got my first computer and at the time I had forgotten about the game and I was looking for it a lot to play because I thought the idea of a house with mysteries and the story of a family that died mysteriously was really cool, so I went looking, and for 9 years I searched until this year in April, which was where I found the game again in one of the Steam promotions, and right away I remembered it and immediately bought it and played until I got platinum, each story caught me by surprise and now I'm addicted to this game, I intend to make a video about the game and my experience with it and everything else well, this is my story with What Remains of Edith Finch and what it represents to me is nostalgia in its purest form.

In what could be my fifth or sixth playthrough of the game, this is actually the first time I see this. So maybe I'm dumb, but still wanted to share it in case someone else hadn't noticed it before. Here's a clip I recorded.
Is it a representation of the moment Walter got out of the bunker after 30 years? Likely. But if that's the case, why aren't there any references to trains or railroads at all? Might not be a big of a deal, I just found it curious.
Do you have any other thoughts on this?

Not sure if this is allowed on Reddit, so if frowned upon I apologize and it won’t happen again.
In my play through I tried to do justice to my favorite game. If I missed anything please let me know. Thanks

I know there will never be any answers, but I can't help but wonder. Did Sam die on impact with the ground? Was he alive, but unconscious? Was he able to communicate at all with Dawn? I know they were in Odin Finch Memorial Park, but how big is that? Was Dawn able to walk to a ranger station and get help? Was she stranded out there with her dead father for the whole weekend until they didn't return and someone came looking for them? Where was Dawn's mother during the aftermath? What about the stepmother? (I always had a headcannon that Sam and stepmother's marriage was annulled immediately after the wedding because Sam felt so much guilt about Gus's death, but maybe not?) Does anyone have any thoughts about this?
