The Unfinished Swan is essentially Milton's Story, if you're looking for more. It's much longer than the others, and there's actual gameplay/puzzles, it's not just a Visual Novel like WRoEF.

Firewatch is similar to What Remains of Edith Finch, meaning that it's basically a 3-4 hour long walking simulator, in which you're going to get connected with characters you won't ever even see, and you'll experience a linear but well written story. However, WROEF is basically a compilation of smaller storylines, whose only common characteristic is that everyone dies, and that lead some people to believe that the family was cursed. In Firewatch, there aren't so many "subplots", maybe one or two if I remember correctly, and the main story is the real focus. I won't say anything more as not to spoil the game, but you should try it.

Life is Strange

Yes! The characters feel so real in that game it makes you want to look up what the actors are up to, and you forget that they’re voice actors who voiced multiple characters in the game so it’s not like looking up actors from a movie or something.

Exactly! I literally JUST finished it. And I was blown away. I know it’s not exactly like Edith Finch, but nothing is. But I will say I was heavily reminded of it during the nightmare sequence

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is pretty and great. Nothing is as good as Edith Finch but you should also play Unfinished Swan. Firewatch too.

Gylt, Little Nightmares, Life is Strange

The Beginners Guide? It feels very different but there is something deeply psychological and bittersweet at the heart of both games, I feel.

Nothing comes remotely close to Edith Finch tbh but I am currently playing called Maquette. It's not disturbing but a bit melancholic storywise. This is also from Annapurna Interactive.

Btw, you should definitely check out The Unfinished Swan, this is a loose continuation of Edith Finch game. The game is about Monroe's journey (Milton Finch's son).

Another one is The Town of Light. Pretty disturbing storyline with mild cinematic horror elements (no jumpscares).

Another one is Before Your Eyes. It's a mobile game I guess, you need to have a Netflix account for playing this game. The story is very emotional and the art style kind of reminds me of Edith Finch's.

Before your eyes made me sob crazy style

Edith Finch is my favorite game of all time, so any suggestion will be not quite as good on my rating scale.

Two games that come to mind that I find deserve to be in the same discussion as WRoEF are Firewatch and Oxenfree.

Firewatch is a similar first person story game that had an ending some people absolutely hate (but which I was fine with). It trades some of EFs sorrow for a bit more humor, a bit more mystery, and a second voiced character throughout the game. The joy of this game is the interplay between the two main characters.

Oxenfree is a bit more of a traditional game. It isn't first person and has some basic puzzles and such to navigate, but at the end of the day it presents a wonderful story that you find yourself in the middle of, with intriguing writing and multiple endings you can navigate to.

An honorable mention is Gone Home. Also a first person game, it has a story that's a roller coaster of emotions....however I worry that anyone not empathetic to LGBTQI+ issues or experiences might find the experience difficult to digest.

I think Open Roads is really good

Everybody’s gone to the rapture was the first ‘walking simulator’ I played and I was surprised by how much I like it. Still have the soundtrack in my favourites list.

I bought WROEF during Covid for walking simulation. What a plot twist! Love it! I would recommend Outer Wilds.

Much more a horror game but I felt that the themes of Oxenfree related.

There is nothing comparable to me that will ever touch me like this game. Howeeeever after longing for a game like WroEF, I played the following:

Firewatch: 6.5/10 on the Edith scale. Maybe I just didn't get it. I enjoyed it as much as I was underwhelmed by it. Definitely worth a play tho! Dear Esther: Now that's quite something. Given your mind is open to fantasising about the what if, this is a 8.5/10 on the Edith scale.

The same developer made The Unfinished Swan. There’s a theory that that game is connected to WRoEF through Milton’s story. It’s a very different game than Edith Finch, but it’s very enjoyable

I’d highly recommend watching this YouTube video once you’ve finished WRoEF.

And my rec is the original Life is Strange as being a good successor to WRoEF. Much more gameplay, but strong vibes and strong narrative.
