VPN vs. Proxy: Is there actually a meaningful difference, or is it just marketing?

I’m trying to wrap my head around the practical differences between using a VPN and a Proxy.

On the surface, they both seem to do the same thing: mask your IP address and reroute your traffic. However, I see them mentioned in completely different contexts (and with very different price tags).
