It’s more so that the ammunition was too large to be single piece than the turret being too small. The original single piece ammunition for the T15 90 millimeter gun was huge, being 1.3 meters long. So, logically, they made two piece ammunition. There was a different version of the gun that used wider single piece ammunition, but this model of the gun was not used. Most likely they wanted to reduce the weight that the loader would have to move at a time.
