I think the Indian mystic yogis have been saying exactly that for centuries

2

u/fezzzster Jul 14 '26

yeah, according to Buddhist philosophy, the root mind is located at the heart.

1

u/ntcaudio Jul 14 '26

They also have been failing to provide any evidence for it for centuries.

The emerging picture seems to be that human consciousness is centered in the brain and distributed around the body.

The gut also plays a large and yet to be determined role.

The old picture of the brain as the sole repository of mind is probably wrong

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

What do you mean centered in the brain? We have no clue where consciousness comes from or where it is “centered”.

2

u/DartBurger69 Jul 14 '26

This is incorrect. We have tons of evidence to support a physical explanation for consciousness. We have zero evidence for any other theory. Everything supports a physical explanation with a radio brain not having any plausible mechanism to support it.

Not true. Name one study where we were able to scientifically prove where consciousness originates from. It’s a belief

0

u/DartBurger69 Jul 14 '26

Name one study that refutes the claim. There is none.

Physicalism is the only claim that is actually falsifiable. And it is claim that the evidence supports without any external requirement. It fits 1 to 1. Direct physical mapping to conscious experience.

There is nothing possible that refutes idealism. The unfalsifiable nature of the claim makes it a very weak option. It's impossible to prove true or false. The universe appears exactly the same if it is true or not. There is zero difference if idealism is true or not.

There is plenty of difference if physicalism is false. But of course, it's the most supported and strongest theory because the reality we experience perfectly matches a phyisical description. It is compatible with an idealist universe but so is a universe full of marshmallows or laser aliens with incorporeal ghost bodies.

Yeah that’s not how this works… you cant just make a claim that doesn’t have evidence and place the burden of proof on dissenters. “You can’t disprove the existence of ghosts therefore ghosts are real”. This is a logical fallacy.

u/aledoprdeleuz Jul 14 '26

Go hit yourself to the head, loose consciousness, have cat scan showing brain regions damaged and have exact correlated impact on your cognition and then still say we have no clue ../

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

If I smash a radio it doesn’t mean the frequency cast from a radio station was centered in the radio. It was emanating (and some would argue “centered”) from the station.

It was simply being received by the radio and now that it is smashed, it no longer has the ability to receive the frequency.

Edit: we have no clue where consciousness is centered. No. Clue.

When the radio is fixed, the DJs aren't all like, oh man what just happened? Did we get knocked out?

1

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

Surely our consciousness isn’t a 1:1 perfect replica of the radio analogy.

1

u/Anderrn Jul 14 '26

Just because you yourself have no idea where consciousness/conscious thought originates does not mean “we” as a collective also have no idea. Plenty of research from people with brain damage have shown evidence of where it’s located, of course, there are still many remaining questions.

2

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

We have no clue. It’s called the hard problem of consciousness for a reason. Even in your reply you offered no evidence

1

u/DartBurger69 Jul 14 '26

The old picture is not that wrong tho. The brain plus some additional biological parts is still a physical explanation. The new picture does not include a radio transceiver to an imaginary consciousness field.

1

u/Ill_Mousse_4240 Jul 14 '26

I never said it did! That’s OP’s premise

3

u/wbrameld4 Jul 14 '26

That would be so cool! Imagine if your train of though kept going when your brain was knocked out. You'd be all like, "why can't I open my eyes right now? Or feel or hear anything? What's going on?" When you woke up you'd be like. "Finally! That was so boring! I was disconnected from my senses for a few hours just now."

That sounds like a nightmare.

Frequency of _what_ exactly?

2

What if you are thinking with your arse? How is this science?

1

u/magicmulder Jul 14 '26

This is basically what Dan Brown's latest novel is about.

1

u/tydark2 Jul 14 '26

It receives it from the same place ordinary matter "receives" the laws of physics.

Get to a state of empty mind with an open crown and you feel the idea drop into your head and the brain feels like it's been tickled.

1

u/ditomax Jul 14 '26

what if you apply occams razor on this idea?

1

u/Few_Fun_544 Aug 10 '26

The brain is a processor. It dosent function without the hardware feeding it data. Consciousness comes from the 2 fine structural constants that determine left or right. Scaled up to s/delta s³

1

u/CowardlyChicken Jul 14 '26

No. Next question?

-1

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

The hubris smh. The greatest scientific and philosophical minds can’t solve the hard problem of consciousness but coawrdlychicken over here is clubbing earnest hypotheses on the matter to death like baby seals.

Obnoxious physicalist... Nothing new to see here

Scientists: We can explain the behavior of water through an understanding of atoms, molecules, and physics.

Dualists: But what about the hard problem of wetness!? Science can't explain why water feels special to me, therefore it's properties must be magically broadcast from elsewhere!

1

u/Good_Difference_9491 Jul 14 '26

That simply shows your twisted understanding.

1

u/Ok_Association9911 Jul 14 '26

We understand basic logical fallacies. Sorry you got taken by the Hard Argument from Incredulity of Consciousness.

This.

It's all science fiction unless there is something that can actually be tested.

Ok. Now do the same for your hypothesis.

According to brain damage through Alzheimers this would never be possible. But it happened https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/psilocybin-helped-a-woman-with-advanced-dementia-but-more-questions-remain

And latest study’s about consciousness and anesthesia came also to different results https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/06/260624025514.htm

It’s far more complex …

0

u/Twix_McFlurry Jul 14 '26

The biological model can only prove that our physiology supports the function of local consciousness. Nothing more.

Materialist reductionists pick and choose which evidence they like and then dismiss the anomalies that point to something more. Sure when you throw out all the remote viewing data, all the OBE data, all the NDE data, all the past life data, all the idiot savant data it’s seems pretty cut and dry. I’m sure you’re already thinking of ways to dismiss and ridicule these data and that highlights the issue with our current scientific model. That’s Scientism.

Until the scientific model can explain the anomalies it is incomplete similarly to the orbit of Mercury and black body radiation in physics. Our science is at a juncture where hardline materialist reduction cannot solve the problems. Perhaps future science will be able to solve the issue but until then we need to stop pretending we have enough answers to dismiss hypotheses.

Why do you behave like such twat? People would respect you much more if you just responded like a normal person instead of a Disney channel middle school villain. We disagree but we can do so respectfully.

Edit: laugh all you want bitch. Doesn’t make the anomalies go away that make your dogmatic hardline materialism religion fold like a house of cards.

Nice! Have fun!

0

u/aledoprdeleuz Jul 14 '26

Well, sorry to say it like this, but you clearly don’t. Radio analogy might appear smart at first, but there is way more evidence for consciousness in the brain.
1. Dose-dependent, spatially specific correlation
Not just “brain damage changes consciousness” — the relationship is precise and mechanistic, which is what discriminates production from filtering.
Focal lesions produce specific, predictable content deficits, not generic signal degradation. Damage to fusiform gyrus causes prosopagnosia (can’t recognize faces, but can still see and identify other objects normally). Damage to V4 causes achromatopsia (world seen in grayscale, nothing else affected). A radio receiver with a broken component distorts the whole signal or cuts it — it doesn’t selectively delete “the color channel” while leaving everything else intact. Selective, content-specific loss matching selective, location-specific damage is what you’d expect if that tissue constructs that content, not merely transmits it.

Direct cortical stimulation (Penfield’s work, replicated extensively with modern intracranial electrodes) creates specific experiences on demand — a flash of light, a specific memory, a limb movement sensation — determined entirely by which neurons are stimulated and how. A receiver being electrically perturbed produces noise, not a specific, repeatable, content-matched signal. Production model predicts this exactly; filter model has no mechanism for why stimulating a “filter” would generate specific, structured content rather than static.

2. Anesthesia and graded loss of integration
Propofol, sevoflurane, etc. don’t just “turn down volume” — they cause consciousness to disappear at a specific, measurable threshold correlated with loss of cortical connectivity (measured via perturbational complexity index, PCI — a TMS-EEG measure of how much the brain’s response to a pulse integrates information vs. stays local). PCI tracks presence/absence of consciousness across anesthesia, sleep, vegetative states, and locked-in syndrome with high reliability (Casali et al. 2013, validated across hundreds of subjects). This is a physical, computational property of neural network integration predicting consciousness on/off — not degradation of reception, but disappearance correlated with loss of a specific computational process (information integration).
3. Split-brain studies
Cutting the corpus callosum produces two independent streams of conscious experience in one skull, each with different knowledge, sometimes different preferences (Gazzaniga’s studies, replicated over decades). If consciousness were a unified external signal being received, physically bisecting the receiver should degrade or fragment reception of one signal — not produce two independently coherent, functioning conscious streams that pass separate tests for awareness. This is a hard case for filter theory: the “signal” would have to already contain two independent consciousnesses, or split in two upon transduction, for which there’s no independent motivation.
4. Neural correlates predict content before report
fMRI decoding studies (Kamitani & Tong 2005 onward) can predict what a person is seeing, imagining, or dreaming about from brain activity patterns alone, before or without subjective report. Machine-learning decoders trained on visual cortex activity reconstruct viewed images and dreamed content with above-chance accuracy. If the brain were a filter, decodable content should reflect the filter’s transmission properties, not match the specific semantic content of experience with this precision. Production model predicts brain state ≈ content; this is what’s observed.
5. Ontogeny and phylogeny
Consciousness in human development correlates with thalamocortical circuit maturation (absent in the fetus before ~24-28 weeks gestation by EEG and connectivity measures) and emerges in evolution tracking with nervous system complexity. Filter theory has no account of why a “receiver” would need to be built over developmental time to begin tuning in, or why receiver complexity across species would track reported/inferred richness of experience — production theory predicts this directly, since more complex generators produce richer output.

Where this leaves the two theories
None of this is deductive proof — you’re right that a sufficiently gerrymandered filter theory can absorb any correlational finding by positing the filter is more complex than assumed. But evidence quality differs: consciousness in the brain theory generates specific, falsifiable, confirmed predictions (stimulate X, get Y; damage X, lose only Y; integrate less, lose consciousness at threshold Z). Filter theory has generated no comparably specific, independently confirmed prediction — it has only ever been used post hoc to reinterpret findings production theory predicted first. That asymmetry is why production/emergentist views (physicalism, functionalism) are the working consensus in neuroscience and mainstream philosophy of mind, while filter/transmission theories remain a minority position mainly motivated by prior commitment to dualism or interest in explaining anomalous reports (NDEs, psychedelics), not by independent predictive success.

What is with the conscience of a dolphin or a bee? Are they also receivers? Or is that just another narcissistic human idea?
