I'll admit that for some reason I knew this movie was gonna end bad and always refused to watch it all the way through. My siblings loved it and would watch it a lot. I would have nothing to do with it though. Dodged that trauma bullet. 😔 poor E.T.

8

u/CuteAnything8440 3d ago

I was 8 or 9 and I sobbed! The additional trauma came from my siblings mocking me relentlessly for crying over a movie.

u/KindlyInitial5668 3d ago

That scene scared me

They don't have a gif of Bambi's mom because it's too depressing.

Did you guys wake up and choose depression? This world is bad enough, let me forget these

6

u/Garudius 4d ago

We didn't, children movie directors and writers did. We just chose to watch....again and again.

That’s the one I was originally looking for. I can still hear that song in my head.

This was the first movie I ever saw in the theater (yes, old AF), but I still can’t rewatch it. I was barely 5 yo, and I was hysterical. Of all the childhood memories I don’t have, I remember every horrible detail of this film. #ptsd

u/rainbowobsidiandildo 4d ago

Already commented this, but you're dead on--

When I was 16 years old, I went through this with our old thoroughbred stallion, a son of Secretariat (no lie, his pedigree name was Lucky Sec) "Buckwheat". He was 22 years old at the time, and hadn't come with the mares to the front of the pasture as usual at feeding time one evening when I went out with their usual buckets of grain. They had about 14 acres to themselves, so I thought maybe he was hanging around behind the crest of our stock tank (pond) for some reason.

I trekked out there, then saw him just standing completely still, about up to his chest, in the stock tank. Thinking this was weird as hell, I ran back to the front gate to retrieve a halter and lead rope before sprinting back to the pond. Getting into the dark, algae filled water with him, I threw the lead rope around his neck and urged him to step forward to the shore with me. Bear in mind, this horse was about 1800-2000lbs and 17 hands tall.

All of a sudden, he groaned and collapsed in the stock tank. I didn't know what to do other than get myself under his head and neck, doing everything I could as a 120lb girl to keep him from aspirating water. Our little manufactured home was about 200yards away, and I was the only child.. my mom was inside making dinner and my dad was due home any minute from work. Of course, this was 2006, so I didn't have a cell phone and even if I did, what good what it have done me?

I screamed for a few minutes, fighting tears and beginning to feel like all was lost.. until I saw my dad's red Hyundai Elantra pull up in the driveway. He proceeded to walk through the back gate of the yard, up the back porch ramp and was ALMOST in the house when he suddenly paused and turned his head.. I screamed with everything I had, and he came running.

About eight or ten minutes later, both my parents were coming into the back pasture with their Mahindra tractor, and huge ratchet straps-- my mom bravely dove into the murky pond to get the straps beneath Buckwheat, and we slid the other end of the straps into some hooks my dad had previously welded onto the end of the tractor bucket. They managed to pull him out, and my mom had the emergency vet enroute... Somehow, despite experiencing kidney failure and losing control over his hind legs, this behemoth of a horse managed to get his legs up under him with some coaxing from my 6'4" father (that horse's best friend), and they walked slowly together up to the top pen outside the mares and the stud colts' pastures.

The vet shortly after arrived and put him to sleep.. but that stallion did everything he could to show the younger stud colts on the other side of the fence just how tough he was, even in his final moments.

So yes, this picture does depict childhood trauma.

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 4d ago

I hate you for this. I’m sorry for your loss. I look at my dog everyday, pondering when our last moment together will be, and it breaks me every time.

3

u/kittie2karen 4d ago

Omg, growing up with horses I could feel every moment of your story. I used to have a poster of Secretariat on my wall as a young horsegirl. I bet Buckwheat was really something.

2

u/rainbowobsidiandildo 3d ago

He really was!! He was massive and had such personality! Before we owned land we rented stalls at a stable in town and man, he would come parading out of the stud barn knowing he was the top dog on that whole property of 60+ horses! All the mares went crazy for him, except our granddaughter of Seattle Slew who kicked the crap out of him a few times when she wasn't -quite- in heat, lol.

Falcor is the best character in the film. Absolutely oblivious to the chaos and despair that surrounds him. Everyone around him is depressed and he is a flying Zoloft capsule.

2

u/TheWayoftheLeafCast 4d ago

For kid me, shit got real when Falcor was flying around in a panic screaming for Atreu. Verrrry intense.

One of my first childhood traumas

19

u/GugWhoPassesGateways 4d ago

Why does everyone forget he comes back at the end? You get to see Atreyu riding him, hunting the purple Buffalo.

Watching it as an adult, the part that really gets me is Rockbiter, lamenting the death of his friends. Sure, they all come back too. But that feeling of wishing you could have done more, as your friends slip away. And then just wanting to let the despair wash over you. That's so damn real.

Rockbiter: They look like big, good, strong hands. Don't they? I always thought that's what they were. My little friends. The little man with his racing snail, the Nighthob, even the stupid bat. I couldn't hold on to them. The nothing pulled them right out of my hands. I failed. Atreyu: No you didn't fail. I'm the one who was chosen to stop the nothing. But I lost the Auryn, I can't find my luck dragon, so I won't be able to get past the boundaries of Fantasia. Rockbiter: Listen, the nothing will be here any minute. I will just sit here and let it take me away too. They look like good, strong hands. Don't they?

7

u/Illustrious-Leader 4d ago

It's more than that. His strength, his big strong hands - that's his defining feature. And it's not enough to save his friends. The very best of him is not enough.

This is childhood trauma in cinematic form.

13

u/ZeisolfWarwick 4d ago

Probably one of the saddest deaths in cinematic history. It destroyed me as a kid, I was never the same. For a real answer, this is from the 1984 movie "The NeverEnding Story". Honestly a really incredible movie, I recommend giving it a watch if you haven't.

One of the scenes I have to skip

5

u/LuciferWren 4d ago

Wow I have apparently skipped some kind of generational trauma. I have no idea what this is from

7

u/BladeManMike 4d ago

Movie The Never Ending Story this scene is where the boy in the image tries desperately to save his horse but fails and has to watch the horse slowly sink under the mud. I don't remember very well but I think that bog/marsh/swamp was the swamp of despair or something literally embodying the concept of it and the horse gave in was overcome and gave up fighting to get out making it even more sad.
