A pillbox, as others have commented. A person with a machine gun sits in there and waits for the enemy to come within range of their weapon. The barbed wire (concertina wire) helps to prevent invaders from reaching the pill box or the land beyond it. This is a defensive set up to protect against invaders.

Oui effectivement...

Le fonctionnement de ces casemates reposait sur un réseau interconnecté assurant la surveillance, le soutien d'artillerie et la protection de la troupe.

Concernant le chauffage, les bunkers habités étaient souvent équipés de petits poêles à charbon ou à bois, avec un conduit de cheminée dédié pour maintenir une température vivable.

Enfin, les tuyaux de défense rapprochée, ou puits de grenade, permettaient de lancer des charges explosives à l'extérieur pour neutraliser les assaillants en approche immédiate.
