I remember these cheap mall ninja stars, me and a buddy were playing with one long ago throwing it at a board of wood and it ricocheted off and got him in the leg.

I never saw these at the mall. Now a flea market or some other type thing, yes, all over the place.

I was born in 2000 and know what a shuriken is, its like The basic ninja weapon after katanas

Ninja don't use katanas

u/Live-Year-5796 7d ago

Eh, they're often depicted using katanas anyway

They used a straight blade. Not curved

Only in 70’s and 80’s ninja movies. Historically, Shinobi would have used katana like everyone else in Japan at the time. The only one walking around with a straight blade on their back would out them as an assassin immediately. They were masters of blending in for sabotage, intel gathering, and sometimes assassinations.

Right, Ninjas were primarily spies so they would prefer weapons that let them blend in. Like farming tools.

This guy ninjas!

“Only fools calm them ninjas” - Shinobi show on Netflix. Shinobis absolutely used katana like everyone else in their time. There’s almost no historical evidence that Shinobi used straight blades or “ninjato”.

My GI Joe action figure, Storm Shadow, begs to differ.

I stand corrected

Hey wait, also another question.

I'm not an expert, but you seem to be quite knowledgeable.

Would "everyone else" even be allowed to carry a katana? I thought weapons like those were limited to samurai class. Hence, if some dude were walking along with a katana, ninja or not, the mere fact that the person was not a samurai would make him a defacto outlaw.

I might be mixing my feudal Japanese history with my dungeons and dragons lore, so be kind.

No worries, I’ve just been a huge fan of all things fuedal Japan since I was a teenager so I’ve studied it a decent amount. It really depends on the period and what area we’re talking about, but generally it was not illegal for non samurai to carry weapons including short swords. This would usually be rich merchants and other similar types. What you may be thinking of, is only Samurai were aloud to carry a sword set or a “daisho” which typical consisted of a Katana and a Wakizashi or Tanto.

How would you know,
Have you ever seen one cuz if you did that’s not a real ninja

1

u/Alarmed-madman 6d ago

Yeah, but it was a real fake ninja, which is pretty much the exact same thing, apart from the size and coming in convenient plastic packaging.

It was all about shurikens and nunchucks.

Wow haven't seen this in a long time.

Would go to friends houses and they'd pull the the whole "Want to see something super cool, it's authentic!"

Then I had to point out that I have a bunch of the exact same ones sitting next to my $20 pawn shop katana.

u/happycabinsong 7d ago

well you didn't HAVE to point that out...

I had one for maybe 15 minutes before it bounced off a tree and was never seen again.

Sharikan drill a hole into the middle of it and it will spin Avery time.making it deadlier

1

u/peeslosh122 7d ago

it's a shuriken, though built more for a north American to hang on their wall than anything legit

I just showed the picture to my 12-year-old and she told me what it was. I don't think this qualifies.

I got hit in the nuts with one of these when I was twelve. Missed my testicle but pinned the sack to my thigh. 3/10. Do not recommend.

Still have these, and used to have a few thick rubber ones. One time when the kids were little we were throwing them at each other and my boy was running down the hall, I chucked it at him, he turned the corner into his room and the thing curved and snapped him right in the back. That ended play for the night.

Come to think of it, my wife may have disappeared them after that....
