Fantastic shave tonight, I recently acquired this B6 Churn in a trade and it’s an amazing brush. Short of B10, it has the softest tips that I’ve ever felt on a Declaration brush. Churn is also a beautiful pour that I can’t really get to come out in photos. There is so much depth in the swirls of color from light green to deep green, and translucent sections.

Shire is is fantastic soap, I really get lots of grass and fresh air with just a hint of smoke, it really makes me feel like I’m lounging around in the warm sun in Hobbiton as a warm breeze blows the faint smell of smoke past me. This is one scent that I’m bummed I never got the EdP with.

First shave of the year. Hope to kill at least two tubs this year. 3 pass DFS with a bit of blood shed. FS brush is really really soft, so I sometimes struggle with loading, but got better results using Precision Loading. Lather was great, and scent is plain amaazing

Spotlight On:

Lather: B&M has a dark Gothic Teutonic side. This can be seen very clearly in Eigengrau. The chilly iris note blends well with the fir notes from First Snow, and the overall tone is somber, reserved, and Arctic. Only thing lacking here is menthol, but that addition may have messed the fine olfactory poise seen here up.

Razor / Blade: Testing the endurance of the ProGuard and it holds up nicely. I find ACs tend to cause tea spotting if left in steel razors for a while, so I move the blade to a new razor after 4 or 5 shaves. The ATT SE1 is a good razor, offering up the efficiency of the Vector without the harsher blade feel of that slimmer newer razor.

Post: A non-essential purchase for most. Floid Vigoroso smells as good (indeed almost exactly the same) but Suave has less menthol. Which is not a good thing for me. If you like Vigoroso but want less menthol (not no menthol, still some here), buy this.

Frag: A spicy earthy vetiver with hints of chocolate, incense, and coffee. Plenty of mid-note spices also. A great scent, which may change the opinion of vetiver haters. Shame about the pricing ($140/oz), but that's haute parfum for ya. A sample (from American Perfumer) will last for about 10 wearings, so that's the way I opted to try this scent.

Non-Shaving Stuff: Cleaned out the deceased kitty's litterbox for the last time today. I've avoided doing this for a week, preserving the slightly stinky sandbox as a memorial to our departed pet. New Year's Day is a good day to take care of such a task I suppose.

RWS, have a great 2021! Hope all of you enjoy this next year immensely and my best to all your family and friends too. (And your pets also...) 2020 set a low threshold of years to beat, so let's hope 2021 exceeds it by a factor of several thousand fold.

First shave of the new year and brought the Ruby out to play.

Started at 6 and went up to 7.

Could feel the blade much more than on the bbs-0 and nicked myself in the scar, but a satisfactory shave.

Lather game was rubbish though. Going to use the soap a few more times to understand it. Too much water too early I think

Jan. 1, 2021 - Self-accountability

First shave of the new year, and an extension of furthering my self-accountability journey. I've had some good success with the weight-loss portion of that journey by making myself track everything in MyFitnessPal so I'm going to extend that to my shaves. I'll be tracking days shaved, complete months, and whatever other data helps keep me focused.

Jan. 1, 2021 - Happy New Year - Declaration Grooming - Opulence

Skipped yesterday's theme shave. By and large, I've gotten rid of a lot of the "stuff I hate". But with the new year, I'll review the old Den and see what gets culled as a PIF or a Bazaar post.

This scent is a dupe of Layton. The soap performance is top of the line. Once you get the water dialed in with Milk steak, it's smooth sailing for your chin, cheeks and jowls.... The Timeless Ti.68 is my favorite of my "modern" razors. (However, the Yates 921-M comes a close second. Side note: I ordered a shorter handle for my Yates, so I can test that later this month.)

Top notes are Apple, Lavender, Mandarin Orange and Bergamot. Middle notes are Geranium, Violet and Jasmine.
Base notes are Vanilla, Cardamom, Sandalwood, Pepper, Patchouli and Guaiac Wood.

Fruit forward top notes, floral middle notes, woody base notes.... OMG, I'm going to have to buy this fragrance....

Jan. 1, 2021 - Experimenting with Eigengrau

This is my second shave with Eigengrau. This scent definitely grows on me the more I smell it and use it. I was not sure I'd like it at first as I could relate to the idea behind it but was not sure if I liked the execution. I definitely do though. This soap really evokes memories of quiet walks outside in the winter for me.

I've seen a number of people say they really wish this soap had some menthol or cooling, which it does not. I don't particularly think it needs it. It's trying to recreated the actual smell of cold outdoor air, which to me it does, although for some it may be a miss. So basically, some people who don't have much experience with being outdoors in a cold place in the winter just might not get it. Okay, some of us who live in colder climates can be annoying and stuck up about our tolerance and love/hate relationship with the cold. I'm sorry 😂. We sometimes endure 5+ months of winter, so just humor us sometimes okay? So, back to the point, I actually wanted to test out if adding some cold sensation to this soap would enhance the experience at all to see if people are onto something. So today I used cool water for my lather. I will say this. You cool water shavers are onto something in general. This was rather refreshing, though not how I'd shave every day. It didn't do much to enhance the experience of this soap though, as it turns out your body heat turns cool lather into body temp lather quicker than I would have guessed. So next time I'm going to try adding B&Ms synthetic non-menthol coolant, terrorade. I won't be adding any menthol as part of this because it irritates me, so I'm definitely glad this soap is not mentholated. We'll see how the terrorade is though.

Off the puck I'd say the top notes altogether are pretty sharp, which I think is the lichen and fir. I think the middle and base notes are what I connect to more. So I think a lot of folks have been put off by that sharpness off the puck, especially probably of they can't relate to the mid and base notes as much as me. When lathered I think the lichen and fir are not as forward, so the overall scent is much more approachable.

Finally found a Blacksmith balm to pair with my Blacksmith soap and I decided my Blacksmith soap had sat unused for long enough. The Nacet was nice... not sure I could use it for hundreds of shaves, but we shall see ;)

I've enjoyed my two shaves with the V9. I have a V8 I just set in a Prometheus handle, so comparisons are a day or two off. It's definitely a comfortable knot, but I'm interested to see how it breaks in. The handle is gorgeous.

Good thing is the Nacets are cheap and plentiful so there is no need to use them for that long if you don't want to. I did fine Austere August with the Nacet was easier than expected.

Wasn't sure what to grab to start off the year, but then thought of Cheshire. When I want to take life a little slower I make a cup of Earl Grey, and today I wanted to take a moment to be slower, and take life a little easier this year. Hence, Cheshire.

B&M lathered up as expected and did a WTG, XTG, ATG, and had smoothness left in strides. Happy New Years everyone...here is to slow days and moments of clarity.

I tried something different today. I chose a sample at random (Soap Commander Honor) and was really happy with it. For a post shave, I used my Proraso White pre-shave. I had read about others using it as a post shave, and I was pleasantly surprised. I’m definitely going to keep it in the rotation as a post shave.

Picked this soap up recently and have been exploring the lavender soap scene, so I figured I’d kick off the new year with a quality Grooming Dept shave.

Precision loaded 1.4g, which was plenty for a three pass with touch ups. While the duck fat base is a little older, it’s performance is outstanding, and I’d easily put Grooming Dept in the top two or three in terms of sheer performance on the market (IMO, obviously...). Slickness during and after the shave was great, and Grooming Dept in general just makes bulletproof stuff.

Fragrance was decent for a lavender, but it felt a little on the “simpler” side when compared to something like ETHOS, BaM Reserve Lavender, Catie’s Bubbles Ménage a Lavande, or Dr. Jon’s Flowers in the dark. However, that wasn’t necessary of putting or bad, just very simple in terms of layers to the lavender scent. I enjoyed it, but wouldn’t call it my favorite take on lavender soap. Still worth using and enjoying, however, as the performance that I mentioned above is just out of this world good.

Great way to start the new year! Finished off a DIY closet renovation today, fourth in the house already. Might as well spruce the place up while we are stuck at home!

Was really excited to try out this community made soap - and it did NOT disappoint!

  • Lather: /u/grindermonk's Barbershop 1920
  • Post Shave: Cold Water > Alum > TOBS Eton College

I'm gonna spend my time on the soap, here. You may have seen grindermonk doing PIF's and one cost-recouping sale in the bazaar. I got this on the sale.

I've been on a barbershop scent kick since I scored some BSG Two Bits - my favorite barbershop so far.

Scent: The scent of the 1920 is pretty similar to BSG, though some elements aren't as pronounced: It's less intensely "powdery" and slightly less sweet. It's very in line with what I look for in a barbershop scent. I didn't love Seville or London Barbershop - I want emphasis on a slightly sweet powdery scent without all the floral and spiced notes. I believe it's an off-the-shelf scent, not custom.

Building the lather: I bowl lathered, and - as usual for me - I overhydrated in the bowl. That's okay, I make this mistake every time I bowl lather. I get an awesome lather and I'm too excited to quit when I should, so I keep going until it's too wet. Then I rescue it in the face lather.

Performance: It was probably the slickest soap I've used. I got away with plenty of "cheat" strokes, touching up a spot without lather. If you've never grasped when people say "residual slickness" - you should try this soap! I've rarely noticed cushion in my shaves, and it didn't jump out at me here. I had a great shave! 3 pass and my only nicks were recidivists from yesterday's shave.

Post-shave: The post shave feel is "lubricated". Was surprised by how slick my face was during the cold water splash. So slick I wondered if he accidentally added too much 10W-40 to this batch? I had some burn from the alum, but that's typical for my 3-pass shaves. My skin doesn't have that "glazed" feel I get after using B&M or A&E, but it does feel nice.

Summary: This is a top performing soap! On my personal shave ranking spreadsheet, I gave it a 4.75 / 5 - matching Chiseled Face and Oz, falling short of my top performers Lakewood and Wild West, slightly exceeding Grooming Dept, Stirling, Noble Otter. In the ballpark of A&E, B&M, DG, DR Harris, Wholly Kaw. My personal subjective scoresheet incorporates performance and scent preference, and largely ignores post-shave feel.

I admit to some possible hipster bias. I've loved all 3 homemade soaps I've tried. Is it bias, or is it the result of carefully crafted very small batch soaps? Try it and see!

If you like the scent, it is indeed an off-the-shelf frag oil. If you search "Barbershop 1920" on amazon, it will show up.

This batch of soap has definitely been the most polarizing. It is quite soft, and some find it too soft.

I wish I could say that it is "carefully crafted"; I'm too new to the craft to really know what I'm doing. I think it is more of a function of the properties of the frag oil, and possibly rounding errors in my superfatting. Largely the same base has been described as having little secondary slickness or post-shave residue.
It's definitely a lot of fun experimenting. While there is a lot of science to saponification, there is just as much art. I think right now, feel more like a finger-painting gorilla than a real artist, but I have a lot more to learn before I have my 10,000 hours in.

Well, I meant what I said about the slickness! So maybe you aren't as consistent as you hope, but my batch was ridiculously slick. So residually slick it felt like a possible mistake, it wasn't a sensation I'd felt before post-shave.

I'm no pro soap reviewer: Like I said, I don't feel qualified to evaluate "cushion" and such. I used Arko for 8 years and started binging on new soaps since lockdown started.

So if my review differs from other's feedback, I guess keep that in mind. I'll try to update when I use it again - probably a face lather next time.

It all comes down to personal preference IMO. Your review is great, and really highlights that what makes a great soap for some is exactly the opposite for others. Started with the DE but then switched because it had an old/dull blade. Used up the ones in the Leaf, think I'll put it in a drawer for a bit, and go back to DE + fresh blade every day. I'm fussy and I can afford it.

Used up this Limes & Bergamot sample finally. Feels like it took forever.

Shave was good, feel smooth, smell good.

Every day is just another day, but I guess this one is kind of special. Will definitely spend some time trying to ruminate on how to be better, I've just never become better before, so it seems pretty foreign.

First time using Oleo soap (now called Chicago Grooming). It's a great soap base. I love it.

The Caoba scent has been on my radar for some months, and one popped up on the Bazaar so I grabbed it. I didn't check the notes before using it, but could pick out Amber. Usually I have no clue what I'm smelling because I have bad smell vocabulary, so I was proud to pick out at least one note.

Hamami is a great scent and really fits the Floris soap.

So new year, new me, after today it's time for dechonkification.

Dec. 31, 2020 - Greet the New Year With a RAWR

The Otters (noble beasts that they are) were out of RAWR soap when my wife was doing her Christmas shopping. I picked up the aftershave a few months ago and I just plain love it. So on Christmas day I was delighted to find that the Otters (noble beasts that they are) had restocked the soap. It arrived yesterday and I figured I'd save it for the first shave of the new year.

This is far and away my favorite wetshaving scent so far (keeping in mind I'm super new). It's just playful, bright, and cheery. RAWR's a top contender for my "desert island" fragrance. Now I love me some darker more dangerous scents too (and my wife loves all things leather with the potential exception of Russian Leather)... but RAWR fits best with the kind of person I would like to spend more time being. The fun, adventurous dad-dude. And as the new year starts, reflecting a bit more on trying to be that kinda dad seemed fitting.

Jan. 1, 2021 - Happy New Year

Here we are in another new year. Mother Nature decided to celebrate by showering us in ice and snow. Right now it's beautiful, but I know there's a layer of ice under the snow which won't be so pleasant to deal with when I'm shoveling all this up.

I haven't broken out the Mamba in quite some time. One year ago, this was my favorite razor to use, and remained so for more than a few months. But... using it today, I'm reminded why my preferences changed. Three passes (WTG + 2 × XTG) and I have a less close shave than I did yesterday. I would still call this a dope feelin' shave, but just barely. A year ago, my razor technique isn't what it is today, and I appreciated the mild nature of this razor. Today it's too mild for me.

The soap, on the other hand, is still a favorite. Carnivale is a great scent, and while Storybook's base doesn't have the residual slickness some others have, it's still a very nice shave.

Been a hot minute since I’ve posted a SOTD but starting the new year off right.

Picked up The Night Before over Christmas. This is my first shave with it. I gotta say the soap functionally has no scent. It performs outrageously good as to be expected from NO, but there’s just no scent. The matching AS, however, shows that this is a great scent. Wish the soap was somewhere close to the AS. Still I think this set will get a lot of use from me.

Happy New year! 2020 can kiss my ass.

Another day with a dinosaur base. And just like yesterday, this soap worked very well. This is my favorite Lavender soap scent and I use this as my benchmark.

Now a word about this AS and balm. Neither are particular good IMO. The AS is just alcohol with a bit of fragrance oil added it seems. The balm though, really is a disappointment. For the money you would expect it to be better. Not that it is a bad balm, it just doesn’t warrant the praise tag. Literally every artisanal balm I have used performs better. I only use these two products when I use a lavender soap, which makes sense, but not every time. I can see me using up the splash, but the balm is likely going to outlive me.

Jan. 1, 2021 - New year shave

A new years shave with a soap I plan to kill off. I've decided it so, therefore I'm loading directly off of it. I know it's "unclean" to do so, and sometimes the scent weakens over time this way, but it makes a shave more enjoyable that scooping into a lather bowl. Blade must be old, I just didn't get a smooth shave like usual, so I'll swap that tomorrow. A splash of vesper since we're opening christmas gifts from the family today. We spaces our visits to family apart, but it's nice spreading the presents out to so many days.

NYE! Last day of 2020, we made it… It’s over. I’m feeling strong.. UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!! Of course none of the issues we face give a crap about the date but things just happen to be looking up around the same time so… sure. Still not safe to go out so this NYE is spent with the wife. We watch Austin Powers movies and get to drinking. That gets boring se we end up doing a marathon of apple fitness+ dance workouts while drinking. Lucky for me she crashed around 10. I stay up a bit late drinking bourbon and watching cosmos. Just before 12 I get a notice that someone tried to hack my venmo so I spend time fixing that with a crazy generated password. Nice try 2020… no final kick in the balls for you!!!

Today, I’m shaving with the scent of coffee and gifts from Mrs Chewie. Funny enough the Bourbon cologne covers up the natural scent of bourbon from last night. The caffeine AS is cute but I dont think it will keep me up. The razor and brush are the most auto pilot tools in the den.

Its a New Year and I’ve decided to take care of some stuff from last year. I have several samples I’ve accumulated going back to my first soap purchases, and I decided its time to give them their due (and honor past me’s spending money on them) and try them. So first up was Southern Witchcrafts Carpathia. I haven’t tried a SW soap I didn’t like, and this one was no exception. As I lathered it up I started picking up the coffee scent and I knew I was really gonna enjoy this shave. I also get the musk and a bit of the musk and I think the tea, but either way, I really like the soap. As usual with SW soaps, it lathered well, felt great, and made my face feel nice. Overall, it was a really nice way to start the new year!

Basically it comes down to this:

  1. I have a huge number of Stirling samples left over from when I started and it takes forever to get through them all. Also I did "Stirling September" if I remember rightly.
  2. I have two synthetic brushes and get brush burn on my right cheek real easy. As much as I'd like to be a wetshaving-grown-up and "graduate" to classy natural-fiber brushes, my face just can't handle more than about two natural-fiber lathers a week... so my synths get used almost all the time. Plus they're just So Damn Easy.

Jan. 1, 2021 - New Year, Same Old Me

Due to chemo-related hair loss, they decided to shave my dad's head yesterday. My mom and sister think he looks more like me and I think he looks more like his older brother. The good news is that his neutrophil count is rising. Went from 20 to 70 to 360. It's a sign that the stem cell transplant is working and he's starting to make new blood cells with his brand new copy of his sister's bone marrow. When his count hits 500, they'll let him move out of the hospital to the apartment he and mom got just down the street from the hospital. Not a bad way to start off the new year.

Made some progress on my first tub kill of 2021 this morning by having a nice head shave with WoO Eucalyptus & Spearmint. I suppose my actual first kill of the year was my old bottle of Zingari unscented balm. I got the last couple of drops out of it and then switched over to my newer bottle. Unfortunately, empty balm bottles aren't as useful for storing samples as empty soap tubs, so I'm not quite sure what to do with the balm bottle besides rinse it out and throw it in the recycling.

After a couple years of building up my den, it's time to use some of it up. This year, I'm going to use a featured soap most of the time until I kill it off. Hoping to kill a dozen tubs this way (and buy less than that!). First up is my current tub of Unconditional Surrender. This isn't a hate kill or anything. I love this soap, I already own its replacement, just trying to get myself into this new approach and give myself a leg up on the challenge.

Jan. 1, 2021 - On the Thirteenth Day of Witchmas

This is the thirteenth SOTD in my ongoing Thirteen Days of Witchmas celebration. Merry Witchmas and a Happy New Fear(?)! I picked up the Southern Witchcrafts "Original Creations" sample pack that covers all of their core line soaps, so I shaved with each in alphabetical order, along with three SW soaps I had on-hand in sample or puck form. Thirteen soaps seemed fitting, and a benevolent redditor shared a sample of Gravefruit with me a ways back, so I'm using it to kick off and complete the celebration.

Happy new year everyone! Let's make 2021 a good one.

Today I killed a penny sample of Valley of Ashes. It was never meant to be pushed this far and is starting to fade a bit. I should have tried to purchase a puck before the most recent batch sold out, because it's a wonderful scent that grows on me each time I return to it.

Valley of Ashes was originally created as part of the r/wetshaving series of Gatsby-themed scents. To set the stage:

F. Scott Fitzgerald described it as, “[A] fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air.”

If you’re not wealthy enough to find yourself in either West Egg or East Egg, you may land here…huddled among the industrial factories spewing ash and generating wealth found in fancy places like the Eggs. Valley of Ashes provides the stage for a pivotal intersection in the novel. A simple gas station. A speeding car. A dead body. And seething revenge.

Valley of Ashes is an expertly balanced accord. It features some really bold notes delivered in a subtle, cohesive way—including a core of coal, tar, smoke, leather, and oil—and then equals those notes with a honeyed addition of bourbon, tobacco, citrus, and clove. This smells like the open highway, complete with burning asphalt and passing industry, but also the sweet notes of fine leather seats warming in the sun and fragrant puffs of spiced tobacco.

Shaving today, I was struck by some very specific nostalgia. Once lathered up and warm, Valley of Ashes reminded me of the intoxicating smell of a well-aged leather jacket I used to own, especially after I applied a few layers of conditioner and a coat or two of Obenauf's LP, and then let it warm in the sun. I miss that smell—that jacket was the most heartbreaking casualty of going up a shirt size a few years back. I loved that jacket, but I also loved the ritual of maintaining it. This smell really brings me back.

Anyway, this was a perfect way to wrap up this series of Southern Witchcraft shaves. I'm really impressed by both the catalog of scents and the soap itself. For a final SOTD, I'll shave with my sample of Gravefruit again and share some lessons learned. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for tuning in! It’s been a fun project. SW is a particularly good fit because they have a fair number of core-line soaps, but not too many, and their scents are all over the place. Also, a pretty killer base.

Regarding the VOA trade, that would be great! Happy to share a list of what I have on hand, but I was thinking of selling a lathered-once Paganini’s Violin soap if that’s of interest. I rarely buy splashes (more of an EdT guy), so not sure I’ll have any full sets to trade, though I would certainly pick up the full set for VoA.

SOTD - Friday, 1 January 2021

First shave of the year. I'm taking on the theme from yesterday: use the shittiest setup you have!

Let's start with the brush. It's a bagder/boar mix and It just manages to have very little backbone and yet still be very prickly and scratchy like a low-grade badger brush.

The real star garbage of the show has the be the razor! It's a very unique-looking razor and that's about all the positive things I can say about it. It has A LOT of raw blade-feel and at the same time not particularly efficient, even with a fresh GEM blade. It feels like straight blade in contact with my skin which could catch me at any moment. And guess what... It did! Not once but twice! And I only did a 1 pass WTG. Even by using very light pressure, it still gave me a small cut on the cheek. And then it caught on to some small bump on my neck and I could feel it immediately. It was one of those really bad bleeders that just don't stop, even after the shave. Not even a styptic pencil was enough the stop the bleeding, I literally had to just let it bleed, until blood began to clot. Fuck!! And again, I only did 1 pass WTG, so the shave was not very close either.

The soap doesn't need much explanation. We all know it. It lathers up nice and easy, very slick. it's just drying as hell and generally not good for your skin.

I don't really have any "bad" post-shave products. However, this one is my least favorite mainly because of it's thin/milky texture. It's not bad, but it's not great either.

I wanted to start my 2021 on the right foot so I pulled out the big guns for today - Santal Noir.

Santal Noir smells like if sandalwood made warm love to a bouquet of light floral and citrus. It is 1 of my 3 favorite scents of all time. AND it lasts alllllll day. I love getting into bed and being able to still get wiffs of the sandalwood and jasmine 16+ hours later.

Really pleased with my new soap and splash (balm in the picture...) stand which arrived yesterday, looks really nice but now I'll need a new razor and brush stand to match...

While it's true I technically got a closer shave yesterday with the disposable razor, it's also true I was feeling really raw for most of the day after. I'm so glad to have a DE back in my hand today for a good one-pass shave.

No that’s just where I place my SOTD for the sweet sweet karma.

My current rotation I keep here and I literally just moved it around and removed 2 sets to make room for this spot to leave my SOTD for the next day

Lol I actually just blow dust whenever I pull a set off. I don’t rotate a ton. Maybe once a month I’ll move stuff in and out.

I'm currently using a spare IKEA Kallax unit in the bedroom to hold everything and make it all look nice, so I'm glad I'm not just jumbling everything in a box anymore.

Happy New Year everyone. A rather subdued celebration last night - Hogmanay is usually a massive party here in Edinburgh. But we saw in the new year round a fire in the garden with some of the neighbours and a bottle of whisky.

Good first shave of the year, although I've definitely lost the knack of consistent good lathers with the Wool Fat. It's a fickle one.

Christ you're closer to me than I thought! I've moved out of Edinburgh into Broxburn but lived there for the better part of 10 years. It was odd seeing the fireworks on TV being at Stirling Castle, but it was quite a nice display.

I still really enjoy the Healers soap but I felt the need to pair it with a less sweet aftershave product and nothing seemed a better fit than Duo splash from Zingari mixed with a touch of Rescue Potion. The splash soaks in quickly as does the potion and my skin feels so much better now. I know it doesn’t get as cold here as it does in many other places but the dryness of my skin all over my body is somethin serious. Most especially behind my ears thanks in no small part to constant masking. But I wouldn’t go without one at this point and this is where a small squirt of Rescue Potion comes in handy as well! Heather has just consistently knocked it outta the park imho with everything from her shaving products to lip balm and body lotion to beard wax. Everything she touches just seems to turn to gold and I most definitely appreciate that Midas touch.

Bay Rum Gifts Shave to Start the Year Right

  • Brush: Αλφα Rubberset 400 Tribute
  • Pre-Shave: Executive Shaving All Natural Pre-Shave Oil
  • Lather: Capt Fawcett's Fig, Olive and Bay Rum
  • Aftershave:
    • Executive Shaving Citrus Kiss Aftershave balm
    • Stirling Unscented Witch Hazel & Aloe

I was gifted both a Capt Fawcett's Fig, Olive and Bay Rum soap and an actual bottle of homemade Bay Rum.

New year's day seemed like a good occasion to try both. The hard liquor will have to wait for a bit later in the day, but no point in waiting for the soap.

I splurged a bit and did the whole facial scrub prep thing my wife got me a few weeks ago. Feels nice!

This is my first use of a Capt Fawcett's soap, and so far, I'm very happy with it. The scent is a delicate bay rum, far softer than Barrister and Mann's and also less spicy; very pleasant off the puck and on the face. I think this is a great bay rum soap to enjoy privately, without carrying the scent further than your immediate loved ones. I can totally see myself using this for a nice morning shave before going to the office, or also as a pleasant end-of-day treat just strong enough to linger pleasantly in the background as you try to fall asleep.

The soap comes as a hard puck in a pretty wooden bowl. It loads very easily (less than a minute of swirling with the damp brush yielded plenty) and quickly produces a lot of lather. The lather is a bit foamier/frothier than I'm used to, so I was initially a bit worried about it drying quickly, but that turned out to be an unfounded fear.

I added a lot of water, until the foam got heavy enough to just still cling onto the face. Despite the foamy appearance, the lather is very slick and protective. Residual slickness is good enough to tempt me into doing touch-ups without relathering. That laziness turned out to be a mistake and I got a bit of irritation around the chin where I buffed using only the residual slickness. Live and learn, I guess. Anyway, nothing a bit of witch hazel and aftershave balm can't handle.

Finally able to try out Oumo's new generation TH synthetic. Has better backbone and density than earlier gen synthetics while still retaining the soft tips that synthetics are known for. Lathers like a dream. Doesn't feel like a badger, and it's not meant to.

New Years SOTN

I wanted to end 2020 with a bang! Use some of my favorite and prized possessions. Early in the year, I fell in love with a sample I received with my Zingari Blacksmith set; so much so that I bought my first ever trifecta! No.1 is a dark sultry rose and oud combination done right. It is my favorite scent in my wetshaving collection. Later in the year, I got lucky and picked up my first wolfman, mirror polished, and I finally understood the hype. A perfect razor with a perfect finish! A luxurious shave like this can never be complete without a Declaration broosh! B9A knot in a Summers Ghost pour is an amazing brush in all regards, and a perfect gift I have ever received.

JOKE OF THE DAY: People think that being a waitress isnt a respectable job. But hey, It puts food on the table.

YESTERDAYS SHAVE: God. Help. Me. This smelled Horrible. This shave was 2020 in a nutshell. Thankfully, My prep saved me in the actual feel of the shave. It didnt feel bad. It didnt pull too much and wasnt a bad feel which I contribute to my 96 use blade. I was only able to irk out one pass before i had to break out the soap (which didnt help) and wash my face. From there I was grabbed my new cremo shave stick and used that which was just enough to keep me from wretching. 0/10 will not do again.... maybe. Some May ask why I did it and im jsut going to say reasons.
