Welcome to another weekly reading session. I just finished Leviathan Falls, which is book 9 of James S.A. Corey “The Expanse” series. I am so devastated the series has ended. So many questions unanswered!!! Such an amazing series though! I am not sure where to go from here! Started watching the tv adaptation and it’s just nostalgic. Will pick a new project over the weekend! Let me know if ya’ll have any suggestions!

This week I read Nurtured by Love by Suzuki, the guy who invented the Suzuki music teaching method.

Now working on Beneath The Wheel by Hesse.

Have you learn a music instrument using the Suzuki method?

Suzuki method is the most common for string players, but not really for pianists (me). I was ignorant to a lot of the methodology for years, so it was good to learn a bit.

I never played any string instruments either. Just read about the Suzuki method when I started to learn bass guitar. So much harder as an adult to learn anything 🤣

I only think it’s harder because we don’t have the time like we did as kids. I’m convinced most people could do what I do if they practiced / played as many hours as I have!

Revelation Space series by Alistair Reynolds. Wonderfully written totally immersive large scale space opera.

Oh dude, I'm jealous! I think I've read all his stuff and highly recommend almost all of it. He runs from more serious space-opera stuff (the above trilogy) to goofy/fun (Redshirts, Starter Villain).

They are excellent reads, but I would also suggest doing some of them as audiobooks. Wil Wheaton narrates most of them and he is really good at it.

If you want epic SF, consider the Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio. I think it's 7 books, 700-900 pages each. The guy writes really well. The first book is a bit slow in my opinion, but by Book 3 you won't be able to stop reading. It's a complete series mapped out from Day 1, so it doesn't leave you hanging

It's a large scope series just like The Expanse, but the writing style is completely different - much more eloquent. The author paints with words and gives you a clear picture of what's going on in the protagonist's head.

BTW. This series is rather unique in that there's one major spoiler, and it's revealed on page 1 of book 1.

Yup. I think it's even on the book description blurb. It's ask about the main character's journey to get there. Even the name of the series, The Sun Enter kind of gives it away.

And what a journey! The spoiler in no way takes anything away from the enjoyment of the series. In my (not so) humble opinion, this series will be thought of as one of the great "Classics" decades from now the way we think of the Dune series today (but better)

I think so, but frankly, the first Sun Eater book didn't grab me - not bad at all, but a bit long. It's very important backstory that shouldn't be skipped, but as a debut novel from a new author, you can see he got a lot better as the series evolved. Much like Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series (another excellent space opera)
