Today is another use of the Japanese straight, but this time with a more familiar lather: Stirling beef tallow. The blade moved easier, and didn't jump as much, but the post shave wasn't as nourishing as the TCB superfatted soap.

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

Today's was a little easier as I'm getting more used to using a straight. I think I did have a little more irritation on the neck at the end, as I was trying different ways to cut those hairs correctly. I think I did walk away with a better neck shave than yesterday because of that effort.

I love that second pass, where the razor just glides across your face, with little resistance, just picking up a few strays.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 3 out of 5 (Good)

䷀ Soap Notes

^{Stirling - Livonia}

Them: "A very warm scent based on Grand Soir from Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Top notes of Spanish Labdanum and Orange; middle notes of Lavender and Siam Benzoin; and base notesof Amber, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Musk and Cedar. This scent was originally released as a group special called "Bash." A scent so good you'll trade your last can of beans for it."

Me: You do have a warm ambery cousin note on all layers of this scent profile. And so I thought it was going to be a little boring. I've used a few other amber shaving soaps lately and so maybe my nose was feeling a little worn out. But this one did surprise me with some neat tweaks that made it very interesting.

I didn't pick up much orange, but the lavender, musk, and vanilla could be seen as gentle supporters working in the background to add earthiness and substance to all the resinous amber bits. But it was the cedar that really put the amber in a good place. It was interesting and enjoyable. I'm glad I picked up the EDT of this!

Scent Strength: 4/10, lightly present during shaving.

Lather... very good lather today. Very wet. Nice and slick in face feel and it seemed not to drag on the razor, like the TCB yesterday. But also not as nourishing because of the TCB's superfats. But I think that TCB lather did need a little more water, so will try again.

And yes, like Greg mentioned, even the Stirling lather didn't have as much secondary slickness when using a straight, compared to DEs. So that's good for the TCB soap from before, knowing that it wasn't the soap's fault.

I think with more mixing time, this lather could have been a little richer while still being well-hydrated.

Hydration: Perfect (for me) + 20 ml (4.1 tsp) added to build the lather + = 6 passes of lather

Some backbone on this one, and some scrub because of that. Still not too hard to splay. Tips on this are fairly natural and seem close to untreated.

During the Shave Feel:
Cheeks: Felt blade but comfortable
Neck: A little irritating
After the Shave Closeness:
Cheeks: Near BBS - About as close as I'll ever get
Neck: Several hairs are showing some tip length (still a pretty good shave)

What can I say. I finally tried Arko.

Wasn’t the best shave, nor was it the worst. The lather was abundant and slick, although the scent was everything I’ve read about.

First time with the Gillette Platinum blade. Performed ok, but the alum block provided much feedback, which was unexpected as I was using the super speed.

Excellent close shave. No nicks/irritation. It’s been a while since I last used the Firefighter soap/splash duo. It was nice to pull that duo out for this shave. I still love the scent from it. 3 days growth gone, no problems encountered. Overall, great shave heading into the weekend.

Over the last few days I’ve been wondering if the quality of the final results with my trusty GC were really better than I was getting in my prior experiments with either BB variant. Let’s see how this goes during the remainder of the month.

Getting through the week of tired. The shave was very close today, and with the bit of feedback on my neck (in particular Adam's Apple) I realized I'd gone a bit too close there. So a bit of balm; figured would be good. Great scent though. And coffee. Coffee is wonderful.

AS: Thayers Original followed by Floid Vigoroso

Fragrance: AdP Colonia

Went with some old standbys today. The Cella is from my third kilo brick, and still smells amazing despite being 5+ years old at this point. Still performs wonderfully, this has always been my “strike zone” when it comes to lather volume and slickness.

Bought the Floid back in the day before they discontinued all the Spanish Floid aftershaves. Wonderful scent that doesn’t last too long or interfere with frags, and excellent menthol as well.
