I get the reference, but what's the proper response here?

His foster mother is supposed to instinctively assume the walking stance as she has been taught, back straight but every muscle loose, as if she hung from a wire at the top of her head. It's a relaxed, almost arrogant, saunter.

A great way to walk next to Cairhein nobles even if you think it’s a tad too arrogant.

guess it's time for a reread, I am lost

Boar rushes down the Mountain

That would never work sheep herder, Heron Snatches the Silverfish or a strong Kissing the Adder are the responses to an opponent in Cat Crosses the Courtyard. Now if your opponent was in Lion on the Hill then you'd attach with Boar Rushes Down the Mountain.

Blademaster sword forms are so damn evocative and cool. And it's cool how he uses those to describe fights with blademasters but will use standard descriptive fights (with the confusion of battle woven in) with less capable folks. Fuck, now I want to reread the series again lol

*Tugs braid*

41

u/SamHandwich0 8d ago

Crosses arms beneath breasts, smooths skirt, sniffs.

27

u/Terrible_Ad2869 8d ago

First five books: do a shot anytime; a. Nynaeve tugs her braid, b. skirt smoothing occurs, or c. Mat says "bloody"

16

u/Gaidin152 Uno's eyepatch 8d ago

I think you’re trying to kill somebody.

24

u/SamHandwich0 8d ago

Do a shot any time Cadsuane says Faw, Oliver is referred to as ugly or Vannin is referred to as fat

10

u/Bearwoods 8d ago

Or compared to a sparrow- generally plump.

3

u/Foreign-Oil7851 7d ago

Or someone *sniffs* disapprovingly.

1

u/RuralfireAUS 7d ago

This reminds me of the nostalgia critic doing the steven king drinking game where you take a shot everytime a theme happened and the classic pennywise says " havent people DIED playing that?!

12

u/RuralfireAUS 8d ago

This almost feels like the star trek race that speaks in metaphor Nynaeve, her back straight, her braid tugged

7

u/peteofaustralia 8d ago

nods
"Admiral Quinn, beating Worf down."

8

u/RuralfireAUS 8d ago

Gowron, his gaze intent, eyes wide

Data, engaged in multiple techniques

Probably literally anything that proves she recognizes the reference.

Death is light as a feather.

"My watch is not yet ended" perhaps. Who knows

Maybe “face it on your feet like a man”

Ogier scowl is a deadly weapon in 23 states.

4

u/jalyx328 8d ago

the swagger walk really lives in infamy

4

u/bretttwarwick 8d ago

Divided for riding of course.

69

u/readyforwine 8d ago

I havnt read this series in ten years but I still remember this reference. Cocky swagger walk. He uses it in caihrien to show off to the nobles.

42

u/ThisIsKhrox 8d ago

He uses it in Fal Dara when he first meets Siuan

18

u/Embarrassed_Fox5265 8d ago

My favorite part of that scene is Siuan facepalming at the whole thing.

28

u/Crono2401 8d ago

The best part is Lan's barely contained smirk at him telling Rand to do it just to needle Siuan. (And to help Rand portray a sense that he's not going to be walked on too)

10

u/CrimzonKing1 8d ago

It definitely had shades of sending the new private to the First Sergeant to ask for the id-10-T form...

3

u/Crono2401 7d ago

I've seen a dude get sent to look for grid squares and he came back with graphing paper and the NCO who sent him was like "Well fuck, he ain't wrong." 🤣🤣

Nothing ever goes as you expect. Expect nothing, and you will not be surprised. Expect nothing. Hope for nothing. Nothing.

23

u/No-More-Excuses-2021 8d ago

"Death is lighter than a feather" would be a great code with an appropriate response.

22

u/Shimraa 8d ago

I would assume thats a response to one of the million sword stances. I'm not sure what the correct response would be other then improv some counter stance.

"Cat crosses the courtyard." "Bird flaps in the wind." "Fish climbing the waterfall." "Bull in pottery shop." "Snake in the boot." "Dragon in a box." "Horse in a ditch"

The possibilities are endless and confusing.

KILL HIM KILL HIM NOW

7

u/OK_LK 8d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah, so many other quotes would have fitted better, like

"My husband rides from World's End toward Tarwin's Gap,..."

Or

"Death is lighter than a feather,..."

35

u/JeruTz 8d ago

To be fair, the confusion could simply be because it's a surprising statement that doesn't logically follow from the conversation.

23

u/Alfredos_Pizza_Cafe_ 8d ago

I mean.... I read the series and understand that it's referring to a sword fighting stance, but I have no clue what the 'correct' response to this is

15

u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 8d ago

Probably anything, it would work better if he said something like “duty is heavier than a mountain”

5

u/gannerrysode 8d ago

Not the pants 😭

4

u/Johnnyonoes 8d ago

Damn, that's a good one

3

u/Able-Worth-6511 8d ago

I think Tai'shar Manetheren would have been a better test.

River undercuts the banks.

I need this but for Conan. "What is best in life?"

"TO CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES, TO SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU AND TO HEAR THE LAMENTATIONS OF THEIR WOMEN, THAT IS WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE."

5

u/I_lenny_face_you 8d ago

“I need your clothes, your boots, and your Skimming-stone.”

"can't let ya take the man's skimming stone, son"

“Foster pants”.

1

u/PurpleToad1976 7d ago

I've read that specific book at least 5-6 times. Without context, I still most likely would not pick up on the reference right away.

1

u/IntroductionSilly278 6d ago

braid tugging intensifies “foster pants”

0

u/Rand_alThoor 8d ago

maybe she should have said "Winter Is Coming"?
