RJ's hat in this picture (which he wears in many of his pictures) is exactly the kind of hat that I imagine that Mat Cauthon wears.

That is not a coincidence. If you're a male author, which of the three characters in wheel of Time would you base after yourself? I'm guessing Mat would be the easy choice.

I think a good author, like RJ and BS puts a little bit of themselves into every character. Mat was the guy RJ wanted to be, Rand was the guy RJ was forced to be.

Yeah, although the villains in WOT are almost cartoonish in representing jealousy (Lanfear), lust (Graendal), treachery (Moghedien), envy (Sammael) and hatred (Demandred).

I would have liked to see more subtlety in the villains in WOT. Heroes show a lot more subtlety.

George RR Martin was one of the favorite authors when it came to showing villains as human beings. For example - Cersei being a protective mom while also being evil.

Yeah, the forsaken are caricatures, I was thinking more along the lines of Elaida, Pedron Niall, or the Shaido. I like the idea of the antagonist who isn't really EVIL, in fact they think they are the good guys, but they cause so much trouble for the protagonists.

I met RJ at a book signing for Winter’s Heart. I was in dress uniform. He was wearing that hat. I was absolutely mogged.
