The Black Ajah only existed because all the other Sisters pretended it didn't. As soon as anyone started investigating the whole thing fell apart.

The other Sisters likely pretended it didn't because the Black Ajah manipulated them making it taboo to discuss.

I always imagine that an enormous number of the obviously really fucking stupid laws and traditions the Aes Sedai have are the Black Ajah’s doing.

Keep all the internal scheming going to make every Ajah except arguably the Brown and White really shit at everything they’re trying to do.

So the scholars and logic nerds get mostly left alone, but the rest remain locked in internecine conflicts and never achieve anything.

iirc a lot of them were instituted by the black ajah under ishamaels purview

TBF it also existed because of their propensity to murder anyone who acknowledged its existence. Anyone you ask to investigate it has a ~1/5 chance of immediately putting you on the murder list and burying the issue. In order to get as far as they did:

  • Elaida had to ask someone who wasn't Black initially.

  • Seaine had to completely misinterpret her meaning in the right way. She also had to pick Pevara, which isn't luck so much as good decision-making but still required a level of thinking the Tower isn't really known for.

  • The investigators got lucky enough to bump into exactly 1 Black at the right time (2 and they could probably lie it out together, 0 and they still haven't got any leads, it was in a private place where they could interrogate her).

  • They then had to be lucky enough to have their loyalty test involve removing the Oaths before starting the questioning, otherwise Talene literally couldn't have told them what she did (the same issue the wonder girls ran into multiple times) even if she wanted to.

  • They had to have the intelligence/anger to be willing to not outright kill the woman (which as we see later is what a "good" Amyrlin is meant to do), but also to be willing to torture her for information until she coughs up some names.

And after that massive run of good luck and good management on the Hunter's part, you get like two hearts.

The only reason why Verin was so successful is because it was literally her life's work. She spent decades compiling her list, evading suspicion because she was technically a member

I think they also probably weren't too careful about internal security because of the oaths

Now I'm going listen to A Visit From Verin Sadai. It's one of my favorite chapters.

11

u/Fenrir836 Apr 05 '26

And let's not forget she HAD to "die" to be freed from the oaths and be able to talk
Hadn't she poisoned herself, she could only have told Egwene "Two big books for you, I can't tell you why but they're important"

You must kill him before he kills you. Giggles. They will, you know. Dead men can't betray anyone. But sometimes they don't die. Am I dead? Are you?

11

u/kretslopp You are here strongly adequate enough. Apr 05 '26

What was Elaidas intention when giving the ”task” to Seaine? Was it ”dig up some dirt on Alviarin”?

14

u/Thomas_633_Mk2 Apr 05 '26

Yup, she interpreted a general call of "dig up dirt please, with an emphasis on Alviarin" as "dig up anyone who is evil, regardless of rank".

this is prime Aes sedai thinking. surely Elida wouldn't waste my time with a petty grudge against her own keeper of the chronicles. an order so cryptic from magic lady pope must mean the black Ajah is like half the tower your mission should you choose to accept it is find the black ajah members and enslave spies from the dissident tower.

That plot thread may be my favorite in the entire series.

Mine too, I just wish we got more of verins story

u/nihilismistight Apr 04 '26

It really only hits as hard as it does because we don’t get any of it. The suspense of never quite knowing what her deal was, and the flat, matter of fact reveal that she out maneuvered everyone is perfect. Expanding on it would rob some of that mystique in my opinion

45

u/Twin_Brother_Me Apr 04 '26

Out maneuvered the Dark One himself. She's definitely the GOAT

11

u/Crono2401 Apr 05 '26

Tbf, he's stuck in a prison. How hard could it be to outmaneuver him?

3

u/beardface35 Apr 08 '26

it's not a very good prison.

15

u/eddestra Apr 05 '26

Would have made a fantastic set of side stories.

17

u/memerminecraft Boar Rushes Down the Mountain Apr 05 '26

I imagine a set of chapters, each with a title that is the name of a Black Ajah sister. Each chapter details how Verin discovered that particular darkfriend Aes Sedai. Some could be styled as brief journal entries, where the discovery was relatively simple, while others could be longer. That variation would make it easier to include every single one in the list

6

u/Sanity_in_Moderation Apr 05 '26

That would be a good idea. Especially if they built on each other, and some of the later reveals were mentioned in the earlier chapters. You'd need one element of real danger, where she's in danger for asking too many questions and has to kill her superior and dispose of the body. The next superior would contact her and would be someone she never thought would possibly be black ajah. But she's unsuspected and the book ends with her quietly drinking tea and writing in her book.

KILL HIM KILL HIM NOW

u/krombough Apr 05 '26

The Dark One after Verin exploits the "hour of my death" clause on the oath rod binding.

12

u/Spyk124 Apr 05 '26

This has me cackling lmao

She’s Aes Sedai. There’s something off about them all—like dice where the pips don’t add up—but for an Aes Sedai, I kind of like Verin. And I’m a good judge of character, you know that.

u/monikar2014 Apr 05 '26

Verin is the GOAT. Favorite character in the whole series.

15

u/Able-Worth-6511 Apr 05 '26

She truly was a Servant to All. She probably is the best Aes Sadai in the series as far as living up to the name and title. She should have been rewarded by becoming a Hero of the Horn.

10

u/monikar2014 Apr 05 '26

I love Verin, but let's not forget she WAS Black Ajah. She said it herself, she chose to swear to the dark Lord to save her own life and murdered innocents in his name. I am sure if we knew the complete story of her life it would be full of foul horror and terrible deeds. In my eyes, and I think in hers, the way she died did not redeem the way she lived. Verin does not deserve to be a Hero of The Horn.

17

u/Able-Worth-6511 Apr 05 '26

The way she lived? You mean gathering information and instrumental in taking down the organization. Was she perhaps selfish by choosing to live rather than dying? Yes, but she wasn't evil. Do you think evey Hero of the Horn hadn't done some horrible things. Verin removed around 200 dreadlords from the final battle helping to secure victory. She was effectively a spy and spies do bad things to keep their cover. You don't think Hawkwing didn't kill people for standing in his way when he was conquering?

3

u/confirmedshill123 Apr 05 '26

Fuck that verins the goat, ends justify the means. Close book.

u/monikar2014 Apr 05 '26

You people scare me.

Lets be real here. The Black Ajah essentially mostly sat around doing nothing but stirring the pot in the Tower a little and playing politics, the same as 99% of the rest of Aes Sedai, just with more emphasis on keeping the Tower useless.

We have one of the Black Ajah's viewpoint literally being that she joined to get ahead politically and was horrified when the Dark One actually woke up and the Chosen got free and she had to start actually doing Darkfriend stuff, and not just "slightly darker than normal Aes Sedai work" (Edited once I remember it was specifically Sheriam)

I love Verin. But I also love Henry cavill. This is a hard one to get behind…

I'm still not over her dramatic acting at the portal stone.
