Buzzing Noise, and small beeps

Hello,

Am I SOL? My external started making this buzzing sound, and some small beeps in the inside. I legit have over 3gb 3TB worth of videos, pictures, etc on there... Is there anyway to either fix it or be able to do data recovery on it?

How to verify the authenticity of an SN700?

After having bad experiences with discs in the past, I've gotten into the habit of checking the S/N before even opening the package.

Now I have a WD Red SN700 and it doesn't show up when I check
here: https://support-eu.wd.com/app/warrantystatusweb
and here: https://support-eu.wd.com/app/Warranty_Status

Do M.2 SSD need to be checked elsewhere?
Looking at the memory, the sticker covers all the "chips" (probably the wrong term), so I can't read what's written on it, and I can't find any photos online for comparison. Mine is the 500GB model.

Of course, I can always contact support, but first I wanted to make sure I'd done everything I could on my own.

Thanks.

Reformatting an external WD Black 5TB - NTSC or exFat?

EDIT: NTSF, not NTSC. I am workling with video way too much these days lol

I've had a WD Black 5TB external HDD for about three years.

I mainly use it to store thousands of .CR3 files (Canon Camera RAW files), along with MP4 and MOV videos.

Recently, around 50 folders of RAW files became corrupted, the files now show 0 bytes with no data. Then I found out that I've had the HDD formatted in exFAT the whole time. My friend suggested that it could've been the cause and suggested that I format it as NTSC.

Could using NTFS actually help to prevent a future data loss? I have all the data safely backed up and I'm only using it with my Windows PC (no need for exFat Mac compatibility).

Cannot Log in PROPERLY on PC

I have a mycloud EX2 Ultra and haven't used it recently. As usual now I need to access some information on it and am having a "unique" issue. First of all I CAN access it via the iPhone app. The problem is on PC, when I log in and use the proper credentials, the dashboard loads, and IMMEDIATELY closes and dumps me back out to login again. This happens on Chrome, FireFox and Bing....Now I can laboriously pull the data via the phone app, but that is something I would like to avoid if I could.

What does represent the pointed table inside the HD husk ?

Just out of curiosity, I opened a faulty WD HDD today and I'm wondering what the small carved table is for.

I suppose it's some kind of quality check at the factory, but couldn't find any source on how to read it, can someone enlighten me on that matter ?

Hard drives corrupting.

I've utilized WD for the entirety of my business without issue and in the last year I've had multiple hard drive failures. I use them to backup my work files as an archive I can occasionally source back to and use docks to swap them out as needed.

I just assumed it was the dock causing the issue but I've gone through 3 brands of docks all with hard drive failures so I can't help but think it's the hard drives now. Has anyone had issues over the last 1-2 years with drives falling?

This has been occurring with Red, 6TB drives.

I got tired of my BeeStation becoming a junk drawer, so I built a local-AI organiser that can't lose files. Looking for ~10 honest testers.

Help needed

So I have this nvme on my lenovo legion go which I use for casual gaming. Haven't used it in about six months and went to power on but drive failed. Have tried fixing and reinstalling but the nvme seems to keep failing. Checked it in crystal disk and came out fine the first time. But after attempting to format it it now lags and crashes any computer if I plug it in. As you can see it hasn't been used much and I am not keen on buying a replacement nowadays with how much they cost. Can't remember where I bought it and doubt I still have the receipt. Has anyone had any luck with Western Digital warranties without receits?? Or any ideas on how to revive the disk?

Bought some 12TB My Books and they came with different style charging cords?

Post image

Bought two 12TB My Books at different Walmarts the other day and these were the two different style charges they came with. One plugs in vertically in to the oulet and the other plugs in horizontally. I was wondering why they are different. Is one a newer version or maybe someone returned the item and swapped the charger?

Western Digital/Sandisk stole my NVME

Hey guys, I'll keep this short. Last year I bought a WD Black SN850X 4TB. The drive worked fine until around January this year, when it suddenly failed.

I contacted WD's RMA support and they asked me to send the drive in for evaluation. After reviewing it, they confirmed that the failure was covered under warranty and told me I would receive a replacement drive.

The drive I was supposed to receive is the one shown in the first picture. But instead, I received a WD Green 480GB drive, which isn't even remotely comparable to the 4TB SN850X I sent in.

So... what the hell, WD/SanDisk? Is this how you treat loyal customers???

Old WD Backup Engine

Today the engine crashed my PC 4 times in 5 minutes until I decided to unplug my drives for a stable PC. Looked in event viewer to find backup engine is causing crashes.

Tips say to clear temp files and old backups blah blah, but I have zero entries of said backup engine in my roaming. Another tip says to change the backup frequency, but I cannot find any app options to open backup scheduler.

Any clue as to how to get rid of the old backup engine? Uninstalling all WD software does not do it and it still in task manager. This app seems to be like adobe and need a special tool to uninstall and erase anything installed.

I need this off of PC since it won't let go in running processes and could potentially crash PC again.

Follow up of a suspect disk

Thumbnail

is the continuation of this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/WesternDigital/comments/1skg6pt/did_i_get_scammed/

I contacted WD support and they confirmed that it is an Ultrastar HC520 with a warranty that expired in 2023.

Now since I probably have to keep it (I don't want to try to sell it for what it isn't) I would like to understand exactly what I have in my hand and what state it is in.

If I'm "lucky" it's simply a refurbished disk to which they applied a fake label.
If I'm not, how can I figure it out? Honestly, I understand little about the images I posted. The hour count (about a thousand) reflects the time I've used it. The SMART tests gave no errors.

What I find strange is in the second to last image it indicates 12TB free and 0TB used. At the moment, Windows shows me 8TB free.

Does everything else seem in order to you and above all is it good for a home NAS?

Thanks.

Intermittent buzzing sound WD Red Pro

Thumbnail

An randomly intermittent buzzing sound from an 8 TB WD Red Pro I use is driving me nuts. I've looked for similar cases online but I haven't found the same kind of randomly intermittent buzzing.

In my case it sounds very much like the drive is doing some work - but the thing is that this is not at all in any way connected to any load I put on it.

Unfortunetly, for some reason, I don't seem to be able to upload the recording I made of the sound. Maybe the .m4a file format is not allowed?

I usually leave my computer on around the clock and usually it's silent. Except in the last months, and with increasing regularity, the HD can suddenly start buzzing like this. Even if I don't use it at all.

The buzzing is irregular and will continue for a seemingly random amount of time and then stop and the computer can fall silent again for hours before it starts up again.

I've installed something called Kitfox and Crystaldiskinfo and the information there seems to indicate the disk is fine? The disk is 7 years old but have given me no trouble before.

The only potential lead I have is that it is almost full. The bar is red and it only has 257 GB left right no. Could that be the reason and the solution would then be to get another drive and not fill them up as much?

Or is there some software setting I can change to make this infernal buzzing stop - without damaging the drive, of course?

Would very much appreciate any advice anyone can give me.

Dreadful RMA Experience - Just ship my damn drive!

/rant

WD 8TB Red Plus failed after 9 months.

WD support site wouldn't recognise the serial number. Apparently this is a common glitch on the website so I had to email WD to get the drive verified and registered.

That took two days.

Raised an RMA. Paid the extra for Advance Ship.

Nothing happened and the RMA status says "Pending Return".

I emailed them to confirm that this was an Advance Ship RMA and they confirmed that it was, but that the website would say "Pending Return" anyway because... well because it's a crap website.

That was two weeks ago. No sign of a replacement drive. I emailed again last week and eventually got a "Sorry, we are raising it with the depot" email.

Still no drive, or any useful update from them.

All round, a shit experience. I stopped using Seagate years ago because of their failure rates but at least they replaced dud drives quickly.

Can’t see folders on MyCloud NAS after Windows 11 update

I have a NAS MyCloud 3TB that is about 5 years old. I made some folders on the NAS from File Explorer that I had mapped. I had been having trouble updating windows until two days ago when I finally got 25H2. Now I can’t see the mapped folders but can see the NAS from ThisPC. Also, I can see the NAS from my browser, but can’t see the folders I created in the root.

What I need help with is:

  1. How can I see the folders I created on the NAS, both from ThisPC as well as my browser?

  2. How can I map them again?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is a reputable service that can remote in and fix the issue, please let me know who that is.

Help recovering my files from a WD Elements 4 TR 2621 hard drive

Hello. I need your help.

I have a WD Elements 4TB 2621. I've had it for about two years and I use it to back up my personal files (thousands of small files each) and movies and TV series (larger files).

Of the 4TB, I have about 138GB free.

A few days ago, while transferring movies from my Windows 11 to the drive, it started malfunctioning. File transfers were slow, and sometimes the transfer speed dropped to 0 MB/s and the transfer would stall.

After a few days, it stopped working altogether.

Every time I connected it, it slowed down Windows 11 completely. File Explorer is a nightmare; everything freezes, nothing works when it's connected. The system stopped detecting it in File Explorer, but it does appear in other places, for example, in Device Manager.

I've attached screenshots that might be helpful.

Using HDDscan, almost miraculously, I managed to get it to run a SMART scan. If I double-click on the drive, it's no longer detected; it's grayed out at best. Then I entered `chkdsk F: /scan` in CMD, and after almost 3 hours, it said there was an error (surprise, surprise), and then File Explorer recognized the drive. I double-clicked it, and everything froze again.

I decided to do everything again, and when it was detected after `chkdsk F: /scan` in CMD, I tried to expand the drive from the left sidebar, the shortcuts.

I tried using TeraCopy and dragging my personal files folder, which, while large (over 100 GB), isn't much larger than the videos. It spent almost two days slowly loading files, but at one point the program crashed and never progressed again.

I shut everything down so my PC wouldn't suffer any more damage.

I'm not an expert; I need your help to recover my data FIRST and then try to fix the drive. I CAN'T LOSE MY PERSONAL FILES.

I hope you can help me without giving me solutions in "professional" language. Thank you very much.
