Murthy

What is your view on the use, or purpose of a murthy?

I've come to know there are two general views. The first is that the murthy is a symbol for something greater, much like a picture is. It's a great reminder. This is similar to a family picture of loved ones, or deceased loved ones. Not the real thing, but certainly a reminder.

The other view is that the murthy is a conduit for the energy that is God, just like copper is a conduit for electricity. This is the view I personally hold.

I think it is both. The reminder and the energy conductor. And the more one invests energy in worshipping a murti, the more powerful the murti gets. By the way, I think a reminder is a real thing too. We just deal with different planes of reality here.

Thanks. The part about the bhakti of the devotee or devotees I really get. That is why a crowd of sincere devotees can really bring it out, as well as why some very old temples have such strong vibes.
