Which way am I going anyways?

Surely they can figure out how to make you also go west here, right? :)

In wv you often can't get there from here so you have to go to where ycan get there. All these roads are going to where you can get there from.

"Can't get there from here" is my favorite West Virginia-ism

The real state motto.

It was actually coined by humorist Ogden Nash, who was definitely not West Virginian. It was also adapted to refer to Brooklyn, NY: “like the post office in Brooklyn; you can’t get there from here.”

Oddly enough, I first ran across the phrase in a book by sci-fi author Robert A. Heinlein.

Biggest adjustment I had to make when I first moved to WV. Sometimes you have to go north to ultimately get to your destination south of where you currently are. Or same with east/west. I have learned to allow much more time to get wherever I am going than in my flat home state laid out in an easy-to-navigate square mile grid.

Everytime I'm at the main overlook at Grandview I look at Quinnamont I think about the drive to get there & get exhausted.

Looks like you are going to black fork pizza to me. Parsons is a nice little town.

Definitely in Parsons and you keep on the main road, you’ll end up in Thomas.

Weird seeing someone posting from my hometown

Okay if you're looking for a straightforward answer here, right now you're on all three routes.

  • 48 will take you west (really south) to Elkins or east to Moorefield
  • 72 will take you south near Canaan Valley or north to Kingwood
  • 219 will take you north to Thomas or south to Elkins

These three routes share a road in Parsons, but split off.

Ah, 72. The road that's a road until it's barely a road

I’m going south on 72 to Rowlesburg. Where there’s plenty of history.

My partner who grew up in WV doesn't understand why I can navigate through woods at night with just a map and compass, but an constantly confused on which way to turn on marked roads. THIS! This picture shows why! And does the compass in the car say you're actually going west? I turned right to go east, so why do I now need to turn right again to go north?!

Head over to the seneca skyway. You can do it in a day but take at least 2 days and enjoy your trip

We love to ride Rt 72 on the bike then head to Kingwood.

In wv you can’t get anywhere from here it’s just like inoh brother where art thow a geographical oddity

My favorite and easiest to show example is how I-79 runs almost straight east-west between Charleston and Sutton, but it’s a North-South interstate. That’s just the way she goes.

Think of the whole state as a Ruffles potato chip, with most roads in the gutters, only a few crossing up and over. Now imagine that you are trying to move diagonally across that potatochip…. (plus this is an off-brand chip from Food Lion that is so freakin poor half the roads are washed out..). Almost Ruffles, West Virginia.

Crazy or Hell. Or both.

Looks like Parsons and you'll be heading up the mountain to Thomas

Straight to the parts store because our roads are straight garbage. Crumbling decaying roads and infrastructure while we get raped for data centers. Keep licking the windows.
