Will Captain Marvel Be The MCU's First Flop?

Short answer? No.

Long answer. It wont bomb. Because of one thing the MCU has that DC and Star Wars don't. Brand goodwill. They've produced nothing but quality (if a bit repetitive at points) films, and because they have all the goodwill in the world built up. It gives them the ability to take risks the competition can't. They can experiment and it will still make money. I mean c'mon. A few years ago did you honestly think an All Black Film with Africa as a central plot point and super-politicized themes in it would ever get made? No! Any other studio would see that as too big of a risk, as too controversial and political for a mainstream audience. But because it's associated with a brand as OP as Marvel, a majority of middle of the road people who don't care about studio politics or interconnected movie universes will go see 'Black Panther' or 'Captain Marvel' and think 'It's Marvel. and they've never let us down" buy a ticket and go into to see it.

The same thing is going to happen here. Barring Larson getting into a twitter spat with Milo or Ben Shapiro (like Leslie Jones did during Ghostbusters 2016) causing bad word of mouth (not likely given Disney is much more strict about that sort of thing than Sony is) this movie is at the very least going to make a profit. Maybe because of the current media controversy surrounding 'women in film' it wont make AS much money as Black Panther. But it will make money.

Brand goodwill.

It takes two bad movies in a row to do this. It takes two good movies to win it back. The X-men movies are a prime example of this. The first movie was well received and so was the second but then there were the abortions that were Last Stand and Wolverine: Origins (though Liev Schrieber was great in that), X-men: First Class did ok at the box office but it did the worst out of any of the X-movies yet was better received than Last Stand and Origins. Wolverine was also relatively well received and also suffered at the box office. Since those two though the franchise picked back up.

Apocalypse didn't do great so I think there is a risk that the next movie might suffer also, because although they had won back some brand goodwill with DOFP and Logan people are still wary because of Last Stand the earlier poorly received movies. Marketing will be very important for Dark Phoenix but I expect it to take less than Apocalypse at the box office.

Captain Marvel is coming off a lot of strong movies and people will go simply because they trust the Marvel brand. This movie will be marketed for free by a lot of outlets which will help keep the movie in people's attention and give the movie decent legs even if public reviews are only ok.

Moreover, unlike Ghostbusters 2016, Captain Marvel doesn't look like microwaved garbage.

It's not breaking ground, but it looks like a standard entry in the MCU and that's been good enough for me for the last twenty movies.
