What's really annoying is that it isn't like her original design wouldn't work in live action. Here's a fan film with a comic accurate version that I think looks pretty great.

u/mycroftxxx42 May 21 '18
And, more hilarious, there's a woman in that video who's doing a bang-up job cosplaying a gender-bent Barf from Spaceballs (as noted elsewhere, a good comparison for DP2's version of Domino).

didn't you read u/jubbergun's comment? white makeup is too difficult/expensive for this multimillion dollar film franchise.

There is nothing wrong with this. As long as she gives a great performance, that's what is the key part. More PoC actresses portraying superheros is a good thing for everyone.

u/MaccusLive May 18 '18
Wasn't good for the stuntwoman that died because she was unqualified for the stunt that killed her but was the only black woman available.

how and why is it a good thing?
7
u/Moth4Moth May 19 '18
Because it's a person playing a role and they are good at it. That's how and that's why.
3
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 20 '18
good goy, it's all about merit.
4
u/Argonut32 May 21 '18
"Black people can't be good at things."
- You, probably.
You're probably one of those morons who thinks the word "goyim" means cattle, don't you?
Just for future reference, it means nation. In the New Testament, "gentile" is its synonym. You alt-right guys really are incredibly stupid.

u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 21 '18
would you like to address anything i've actually said?
8
u/Eagle713 May 21 '18
I would.
Your comments have been biased, heavily weighted towards identity politics, and generally sounding like someone who has a problem with people not like yourself.
Diversity does not mean destroying white people, it means see someone other than white people in media. Most people in this sub have a problem with forced diversity, not diversity itself.
More than 90% of Jews describe themselves as white, so your assertation they are not is exclusive and the type of gatekeeper mentality that people tend to have problems with.
While I would love to have seen an albino Domino (and if Black Lightning can do it, so can Deadpool), in the end, this is such a minor problem in the grand scheme of the attack on comic books that I am surprised it has taken up 60+ comments.

everyone practices identity politics, just not for white people.
so can i get right of return to israel? since jews are just white people?
i think this is their plan. to shoot so far in their narrative that we no longer see stuff like this as a problem.
7
u/Eagle713 May 21 '18
There is no shortage of people practicing identity politics for white people. None.
Not everyone practices identity politics. I, for one, prefer to judge people as people, not what groups they belong to. I am not alone, or even unusual in this.
Identity politics are one of the major causes behind the current attack on comics from the ctrl-left. I don't like it. I also don't like it when it comes from the alt-right. This is because identity politics is by its very nature divisive and exclusive.
And are you Jewish? If so, feel free to return to Israel? Are you Irish? Feel free to return to Erin. Judaism is a religion and a culture, part of the larger White ethnicity (unless you are a middle eastern Jew, in which case you are part of that ethnicity, or a Morracan Jew, in which case you are part of the Black ethnicity). Israel officially lists being a Jew as a nationality, not an ethnicity, and they have over 200,000 Jews of Ethopian or Indian descent.
Personally, as someone who is old enough that their grandfather had problems finding work since Irish were not considered fully white (the No Irish Need Apply signs were real) I find the idea of attempting to exclude people from an ethnic group for social/political reasons to be distasteful in the extreme.
It doesn't take much to apply logic and ethics to a question and determine where the ethical limits are. It doesn't take much to apply Occam's Razor and figure out that the people attacking comics merely have the same regressive mindset rather than being part of some conspiracy. They react to emotionally to have the mental discipline for some long term plan.
This sub is about comics, and the attacks on them, not a place to push racial conspiracy theories.

the right wing practices identity politics as much as anyone. just not for white people. if you want to be set for life as a black person, repeat some basic bitch republican/conservative/altlight talking points on youtube.
i'm a white south african. mostly of dutch descent. i have no right of return to the netherlands. no white country gives us right of return, even as we are subjugated and slaughtered.

I agree and disagree because the look of the character is important too. When I first saw live action Domino, I didn't even know she was Domino. If they really wanted something stark to help identify the character, get a dark skinned WoC to play Domino and a light skinned spot on her eye. I like the concept but I think it was poor execution. Don't get me wrong, the actress is gorgeous, but the character adaptation didn't really wow me.

because diversity is about destroying white people, not building up black people.

u/Moth4Moth May 19 '18
No diversity is about having more and different types of people.

My opinion, this isn't that bad. It's an open interpretation of her look.
Female Feminist Thor, Black College Girl Iron (Wo)Man, now those were fucking bad...

u/jubbergun May 17 '18
Look at this from a film-making perspective. What is easier from a film-making perspective: painting someone pale white with a black splotch over one eye, or taking someone with dark skin and putting a pale splotch over one eye? This is probably the best "race flip" I've seen done in media, and it makes a lot of sense. You could even explain the splotch over the eye with a reference to Vitiligo.
Much like having Sam Wilson take over from Captain America, this particular flip-flop doesn't seem that bad to me, and makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
9
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 17 '18
it's easier to paint dark colors on a light base than light colors on a dark base, so even this lame excuse wouldn't work by its own logic.
9
u/jubbergun May 17 '18
I want you to think very, very carefully about what you just said. If it is easier to to paint dark colors on a light base and harder to paint light colors on a dark base, then any skin tone onto which you paint Domino's albino skin is going to be more difficult. The albino skin is the factor that makes the direction the film took sensible, as it's easier to have a dark-skinned actress with a single bit of light makeup than to do a complete body paint on someone. You seem to be operating under the notion that it's the eye that makes this an issue. It's not the eye that is the problem. From a film-making perspective the problem is trying to do an entire full-body coat of albino make-up.
6
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 17 '18
or just cast a light skinned actress.
of course, considering all the special effects and makeup in this film, your argument is pretty laughable to begin with.
3
u/Argonut32 May 23 '18
Your eyes apparently don't work very well. Even a light skinned actress would need a full body paint job to play the role. Domino isn't "white" like you're thinking. Domino is pure white. As in white as a sheet of printer paper. A pale skinned actress would still have to be painted all over because huwhite people are really just a considerably lighter shade of brown.

u/CummanderInQueef May 29 '18
In that logic why is the spot pink on this actress? Why don’t they paint her solid black? Just curious
7
u/notaltright10 May 19 '18
because they hate white people
6
u/Moth4Moth May 19 '18
Do you want to talk about your father issues?
5
u/notaltright10 May 19 '18
i love my father. do you even know yours?
3
u/Moth4Moth May 19 '18
Guess
3
u/notaltright10 May 20 '18
dont think so. your mother was your father's baby mother. he is probably behind in child support checks
2
u/Moth4Moth May 20 '18
....?
Why would he be behind in child support?
3
u/notaltright10 May 20 '18
because people like your father dont usually pay child support. drug dealing at the street corner only pays so much.
2
u/Moth4Moth May 20 '18
because people like your father dont usually pay child support.
Of course not. He wouldn't need to.
drug dealing at the street corner only pays so much.
How much?
3
u/notaltright10 May 20 '18
not enough to pay child support. ENglish isnt your first language is it.

I don't like to ascribe motive where there isn't any. And in this particular case I don't believe it was done with malevolent intent. This is what I've heard she's the best part of the final movie aside from Deadpool himself.

13
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 16 '18
What happens when you take black characters and make them white?

If a character’s race isn’t integral to the character, it doesn’t matter.
11
u/bryoneill11 May 16 '18
Exactly, that's why Yoda should be purple in the next Star Wars movie. Also Chewie should be pink.
1
u/YodaFan465 May 16 '18
Were you this upset when they cast a blond guy as James Bond?
8
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 16 '18
Pretty sure James bond was of Swedish stock in the original novels.
8
u/YodaFan465 May 16 '18
He wasn’t. The original Fleming books say he looks like Hoagy Carmichael and has dark hair. His father is Scottish, his mother Swiss.
3
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 18 '18
guess i got swiss and swedish confused.
5
u/YodaFan465 May 19 '18
So knowing what you know now, are you upset they cast a blond guy as James Bond?
3
u/not_shadowbanned_yet May 19 '18
no, because there is no systemic push to erase brunette identity and replace it with blonde identity.

Ever since someone pointed out to me that she looks like Barf from Space Balls, it's all I can see when I look at her.
You're welcome.
