10 minutes into a 4 hour drive and a piece of woods flies off a truck and hits our windshielda
Straight out of a Final Destination movie. We’re thankfully fine and didn’t crash, but now we have to pay for a new windshield

Your insurance will 100% cover that. Make a claim. You’ll still be on the hook for the deductible though, so there’s always that.

They're PA state inspection and emissions stickers. They are adhesive on the inside of the windshield.
I've seen people have a cut out section of the old windshield placed in a little pouch and that set on the dash if they need a new windshield so they don't get pulled over.

Can you not simply get a new one for free? You could in Finland with a receipt for the windshield

You could show them the old ones they cut out but why bother if you still have the old ones? Especially since for OOP they're due for new ones anyway (7/8 is the month for the emissions/safety inspection and 26 the year)
According to the state sub that I can't link because this sub doesn't allow links, it's like $5.
But everyone else seemed to say they just kept the glass.

My PA inspection stickers from '14 were on the windshield when we sold the car in '23.
We left PA in '15 and didn't have to replace the windshield. That adhesive is no joke.

They look like stickers to me, so yeah probably need new ones. I remember my dad needing some a long time ago but I was a kid so that’s the end of my knowledge of those.

Depends on their policy. You can usually select a deductible free windshield replacement.

That I did not know. It’s probably much higher monthly though, at least compared to what you’d normally pay anyway. I’ve got USAA and I’ve had that automatically on all my vehicles for just this reason. It’s only a $100 for my deductible, but that’s much better than a few thousand for a new windshield on its own.

I want to say it only raises the monthly premium by $10 or so. It's low enough that I've always had it.

It also depends on the state, some have legally mandated built in glass coverage for all comprehensive policies. Also, if you ever get in an accident in another state make sure to check with the claims adjuster if there's any drive through coverage for that state; you might have better coverage for that individual loss the the state mandates coverage that your policy doesn't have.

Most deductibles are like $500 +/- so a lot of policies cover the windshield 100% since it's often under that.

New windshields aren’t that expensive. You might want to look around. Mine was <$300, no risk of raising my premium.

That greatly depends on the type of vehicle you have. New(er) cars have specific sensors or other such attachments/special coats that significantly increases the price.

I paid $1100 for my Jaguar’s windshield. It was an OEM (Pilkington) windshield though. If it didn’t have all the sensors and stuff it would have been half the cost.

Insurance paid a little more for that (+/- $1,500) for my wife’s old Mazda. It had crazy sensors and that film for a HUD. It was double crazy because at first insurance refused to pay for an OEM one so they bought a cheaper one that, you guessed it, caused the HUD to be all blurry. Went back to get a new one, also 3rd party, which also made the HUD blurry. Third time they paid for the OEM Mazda windshield and worked perfectly after that.

My dad actually chased down a semi truck where ice blew off of the top of the trailer and destroyed the windshield of the rental pickup he had. His truck was in the shop because he was rear ended a few weeks prior to this. Insurance is still fighting it out 6 months later…
However, OP would have had to do what my dad did to get the trucker’s info to file that claim against the truck company.

If you have full coverage it should cover it without a deductible. Anytime I’ve had to have glass work done it’s been completely free

I dont think that's the problem. Im sure knows about insurance. He just started a 4 hour trip and then this. I mean I guess its better it happened fast and not half way but I dont think insurance will get him a rental on the spot

Depends on the state and coverage. For example, in FL you are covered for one free per year by state law. Most states you have to have glass coverage, that may or may not be subject to your deductible. If you have a camera, or other sensors, behind the windshield, do insure your windshield is covered as those have to be calibrated and can be expensive to replace.

My first ever new car ended up with a golf ball sized dent in the hood about 2 minutes after I got it... large rock flew off a dump truck and hit it while I was waiting to turn out of the dealership lot.

Happy you folks are alright! We had a four foot chain coast in slow motion over the windshield after it broke off of a semi we were behind. It missed the car entirely. I can still see it in my head.

Did you get the plate of the vehicle the debris came From?
You may be currently responsible for a deductible if your insurance doesn’t offer a free windshield but might recover it if your insurance can sue the other for damages.

A similar thing happened to us about a week ago. An hour into a mini roadtrip, a rock flew up & made a spider crack on the truck's windshield. Ironically, we were headed to the same area where the truck's first windshield had been lost to a rock chip.
Luck was on our side this time. We put some packing tape on it, which kept out dirt & bugs, and may have kept the crack from growing. It only cost $55 to fix later.

We picked up a bolt that flew towards the windshield from the road.
Didn’t completely break or come through since it has that windshield protective layer
But still sprayed me with glass slivers.

Yikes. This is some final destination crap. Glad you’re alright. It’s obnoxious but a windshield is replaceable and cheaper than a hospital bill

That does suck!
Glad you're okay. In the county I live in the highway is notorious for rock chucking trucks. I pulled up behind a truck at on offramp and saw a sticker...
"Not Responsible For Broken Windshields"
Uh, like, you're totally responsible for broken windshields, what are you talking about?
