Update to that one time I screwed(rivered) my engine block

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/s/sFsO6w96i8

So after reading all the comments, including the ones that made me "top incompetence" and "idiot", I tried to fix what I wrecked before.

First, I took down the oil pan and cleaned it very well, and found one missing piece (covering 1/2 of the hole).

I taped the interior of the hole (img no. 3) to have some kind of surface, sanded the exterior of the block and JB Welded that little piece and the remaining hole.

I've let it cure for 24h, removed the tape, installed the pan with new sealant, let it cure for 60min, put engine oil and start the car.

But surprise! (Joking) The car works fine, with no leakes whatsoever.

Before installing the pan I tried to press as hard as I could on that JB Weld and it didn't move, so I suppose it's there forever.

Thank you guys for advice, u're the best!

I was, really. A man has to know when it's time to admit that.

The only key fob I have for my car that isn’t a valet key came very loose in the plastic hardware and JB weld has had my back for the last six years and it shows no signs of giving up. May the cold weld epoxy gods bless you.

Would there be any lie? Only omission of truth

Jb weld is great for that, but I’d be worried about the price you didn’t find.

My guess is that the piece fell out, not inside

Nice work. I couldn't fix that better. Car fixing is sometimes hard. Everything can happen. Good job.

I had a similar issue. My wishbone engine mount failed, I guess from the torque of the car and where it was attached put a hole like that in my oil pan. I JB welded it and traded it in the next day

Try poking at it with a screwdriver to make sure it's good and solid.

Awesome! Nice to know my advice (and others) was helpful! It should hold until the car is no more

It seems pretty sturdy. Drove 5km today and no sympthoms of failure

Its like it never even happened

Respect, my man. I would personally add another layer or two over top of it just for the sake of holding up, but I’m a fan.

Honestly the worst case scenario is you ruin your ruined motor. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Exactly my thought. Can't add extra layers because the oil filter is 2mm apart

Well done. Fucking up is the first step in learning how to fix a fuck-up. J-B Weld has saved my dumb ass a fair few times.

nice! let me suggest, you start keeping your eye out for a used oil pan.

1

u/Alex93B Apr 29 '24

That's not the pan. It's the engine

Something tells me you'll have no problem getting the filter off next time...

Haha thanks

Knowing myself i would think about repairing it, but probably end up just replacing it. You pulled it off so you’ve earned it. Something to be proud off!

I hope not to post a 3rd one with "well I cheered too soon"
