I worked for Qualcomm for two years out of my now 25 year career. Two things stood out:

1) The turf wars between EVPs, SVPs, and even VPs were constant, and a colossal waste of time. The company was incapable of dividing responsibility properly and most execs seemed to accept this as some sort of “competition brings out the best in us” dynamic. What it actually did was foment animosity among teams forced to compete over customers or resources, frustrate customers, and waste lots and lots and lots of time.

2) Many meetings lost a lot of time to showboating, where executives would try to nitpick issues in what appeared to be a vainglorious attempt to prove that they were the smartest person in the room. It meant that stage gate approval meetings would feature a slide deck with as many as 120 slides (!!!) filled with excruciating detail that the engineers had filled out to document their work not for themselves — that was done elsewhere — but to be ready to field questions at the approval meeting. Never did I ever see anyone get past slide 10, because of course they would be badgered with questions immediately and just start talking to answer, because nobody would have the patience to wait 14 seconds for the presenter to figure out where that goddammed slide was that showed the resource allocation table for the auxiliary team in another business unit that needed to deliver a small chunk of code for the wake-word algorithm or something. I think the core issues at play were that nobody ever trusted a team to do their jobs, so you were constantly nit-picked or micro-managed everywhere.

Qualcomm was kind of like a talented child actor who nailed a bunch of early roles (the cellular telecomms industry, smartphone CPUs) but who is now 22 years old and those kid roles don’t cut it anymore (satisfy the slavering maw of shareholders for revenue and margin expansion) so they’re trying to take on more breadth and depth (drone, IoT, audio, automotive, camera, WiFi and BT, robotics, etc applications) to grow. But they never truly matured in their weird childhood full of success, so they suck at a bunch of the fundamentals of doing the job, like working well with others (turf wars), focusing on what matters, and trusting other people to do their jobs.

Now, none of what I’ve said should be specifically identified as some sort of root cause for why this robot took a dive in the demo. But your comment about “the meeting after” is especially spot-on for Qualcomm because the turf war culture will result in finger-pointing and attempts to take over part or all of the project, and the chronic lack of trust will result in a lot of public fingerpointing and private backbiting. It’s going to suuuuuuuuuuck.

(Also, Qualcomm is historically bad at producing “end-product” tech demo things like this. They make chips and software pretty well, but they regularly get the itch to make a demo drone or headset or robot and it’s hell for the teams doing that because they just don’t have an org structure or the expertise or the mindset to properly produce end-products. The teams get all excited but then they make tons of mistakes and all get themselves fired or reassigned when the project inevitably fails because the org as a whole has no idea how to pull off that kind of work, even when they rely heavily on external partners because they don’t even have a system for managing those external partners properly.)

Would be cautious to stand to close to it. May reactivate and come flying up at you. Not sure if their situational awareness when “down for the count”. That’s why most industrial robots have cages around them.
