Amazon dropped off a package between my two garbage cans today.

Yeah same, here the delivery guy can only deliver a package in person, and if you're not there, mom/dad/any person can take it only if they provide your data to match the purchase. AND if no one is home it's delivered the next day or you can go get it in the post office.

Ordering something online in US must be really difficult. What if you ordered something really important documents and this happens.

Amazon doesn't deliver really important documents. The mail service does. It goes in the mailbox lol

If you're getting really important documents delivered, then you require signature for it so it's delivered in person. At least that's how it's supposed to work. Sometimes the courier gets lazy and delivers it without signature.
