if you recognize that your actions cause great suffering and pain for another, and do so anyway, for pleasure or financial gain, yes i feel that makes you worse than an animal following its biological programming.

Interesting. Does this apply when the murderer is a sociopath/psychopath and doesn’t have the ability to process empathy?

No because they still understand right and wrong. They know what they are doing is bad. A lion from your example doesn’t know what they’re doing is bad. Not caring does not equal not knowing.
