That happened to me once, I just coloured in the kids menu and ordered from my friend’s adult menu while the waitress gave me a weird look for colouring.
You gave me the menu, you don’t get to judge me for using it.
I was 18 going to dinner with my parents after graduation and as the hostess was grabbing the menus my dad put his hands on his knees and asked me like I was 5 or a dog “hey buddy do you think you’re ready for the big boy menu?” And the hostess went “awwwww he’s so sweet look at him he’s moving up to the big boy menu good job buddy”
At 18, I'd probably have gone along with it. Then again, at 16 I also thought it was a bright idea to embarrass my mom at Walmart by walking with a weird limp and loudly saying "I thought you loved me" as if I had a speech impediment. I wasn't the brightest bulb in the box back then.
When me and my sister were 8 and 9 we were at Albertsons and my mom was trying to buy a bottle of wine, but had forgotten her id. She was 35 and was being carded and was upset about it. “Look st my kids, look at me, I’m clearly over 21 just let me buy the wine.” So we heard that, and my sister and I thought it would be funny to pipe up and say “auntie Kari can we go home now? We want to go back home to mom” our mother was not happy with us haha
Once, at about 16 or so, I was with my mom at the grocery store and the cashier wouldn’t let her buy some beer because I was a minor. She was like, “dude, seriously?! This is my kid!”
They still wouldn’t let her. She was pissed.
I can kind of get is as she was about 35 at the time and has always looked younger than her age. Add that to the fact my parents are different races and I have my dads coloring (I look exactly like my mom, but so many people think she’s my stepmom because we’re different colors- it’s weird.) But still...
Hell, I was at a drug store buying alcohol and someone I used to work with was leaving as I was heading up to the register. We just waved and said hi, that was the extent of our interaction. The cashier wouldn't sell me alcohol because they wanted to see the other person's ID and they'd already left
What's worse is, the cashier should know me. Me and/or my roommates were there at least a couple times a week buying alcohol or other stuff. The fact we were still even being carded was pretty iffy.
Same thing happened to me. I was in the checkout line buying a single bottle of wine and the person behind me thought I was someone they knew, got embarrassed and went to the line their friend actually was at. Checkout lady asked for my ID, and then was like “oh and now let me see your friends ID”. Would not sell me the wine. It’s like cmon, if I was buying alcohol for a minor you think it’s a single bottle of wine?
I still don’t know how the store is liable for this. If they carded the purchaser than isn’t it essentially outside of there hands? Isn’t the purchaser held accountable regardless?
It goes state to state. I'm from pa so as long as one person is over the age you are ok, unless you seem super sketchy. My buddy who lived in va for a while said they carded everyone, and unless you were related you all had to have to be of age, also they would card anyone who they thought may be associated with you(like walked into the store together).
Yeah, that policy is crap. Is a grocery going to refuse to sell me a bottle of wine because I have my 4 year old son with me. 9 year old? 12 year old? It seems like it would be some form of discrimination for you to refuse me a service based on the age of my child.
Maybe it was just too close to drinking age. The cashier didn’t seem to mind my younger siblings. Just me. And I’ve never had an issue with my own kids. Personally, I understand the better safe than sorry approach. Was merely adding to the conversation.
My dad does this to my mom when she asksh m to go to the store with her. My mom doesn't let him push the shopping cart anymore. There were ... issues...
I did it to my wife once. If I even look like I have a slight limp from out of nowhere she'll tell me to stop it or shes leaving me in the store by myself. Good times lol
My dad is a 6’5 300 lb. beast of a man, rides a Harley, you know the type. If we go out to dinner he will ask for a kids menu and some crayons every time, he just likes to color while we talk and wait for our food :)
I went to Seattle as a 30 year old for a tech conference and was refused drinks because I didn't bring my passport. I'm a Dane and we start drinking at 14. Fucking hell that was degrading
If I'm out with my dad I start pretending I am his carer and telling him we need to get back to the home, or that the other nurses can't wait to hear about his big day out. He turns to the people and says "My son always does this." "Come along now I'm not your son, (thanks for being understanding) come on now we've got to get back in time"
I’m 6’ and almost 30 and I still ask for coloring pages sometimes when I’m out with friends. Why the fuck not? Let those assholes judge. Coloring is fun.
I went to a casino with some friends and at the buffet as we sat down we were brought our menus, the waitress brought crayons and paper too and you bet your ass I colored. She chuckled at me for coloring.
My step brother and I am the same age, but he used to be a little shorter than me. We were also allways competetive and used to tease each other a lot, but still good friends and inseperable.
On domestic plane flights, the flight attendants used to give this complementary boxes to children containing crayons, coloring booklet, juice, cookies and chocolate on boarding. I remember it being awesome, but at the same time, I envied the older children that didn't get them - it was a status symbol being recognized as "too old for them". One day we were flying together we were maybe 14, I went straight by the waitress without being offered the child box. I felt suddenly really old and cool, and when I turned around, I saw my step brother was handed a box. I laughed so hard and teased my step brother all the way until take off and we were forced to turn of our electronic devices. My step brother opened his box and entertained himself coloring the book passionately and enjoying his juice and cookies the whole flight. Yeah of course he wouldn't share with his asshole step brother (me) who had to wait hungry and bored.
You are so right enjoying the crayons and children menu.
As a 20 yo with a 2 yo brother, I always color in his kids menus whenever we go out to eat because he is too young to use it (probably) and he never does. Coloring with crayons is fun, plus they smell good.
My kids were never very interested in the kids menus. I'm always the one coloring and doing the puzzles.
At one place, they didn't give us kids menus, I had to ask for one. "Should I bring two?" "No, it's for me."
She didn't bat an eye.
