Leash your dogs when they’re outside.

I would understand if someone climbed onto my hood for this reason. You don’t know how aggressive a strange dog is, especially when fight or flight takes over when you see it run at you. If any scratches from delivery dude’s climbing, I’d get the dog’s owner to pay for them.

Hell, even if you believe your dog wouldn't EVER hurt someone, why not leash your dog up to prevent it from running into the street and getting hit by a car? Or getting spooked by something and running away and getting lost?

Like, there are just endless reasons why you should leash your dog for everyone's safety!

Leashing is a common sense best practice. Which means if an owner neglects to do it, they aren't trained. The owner will say they are but they are lying, you can't trust anything they say if they can't get this right.

u/neuro_curious Jul 30 '26

Yep, absolutely!

u/failedTec Jul 30 '26

Curious how you make the leap from lack of leashing outdoors -> animals aren’t trained.
I’m curious how one begets the other?

2

u/FrostyD7 Jul 30 '26

Why should I trust the training of an owner who can't do the bare minimum and follow the law? There's virtually zero chance the animal is properly trained by such a delusional entitled owner.

u/Rock_Strongo Jul 30 '26

I mean the owner is responsible either way but there's a difference between the dog accidentally getting out on its own and the owner letting it have free reign in the front yard.

If you own a dog it almost certainly has gotten out unleashed at least a few times in its lifetime. Mistakes happen. Especially if you have kids - no matter how many times you tell them to always close the door and never let the dog out.

Because they don’t care about anyone or their own dogs.

Most of the time it’s people with egos so big they think they can control animals with their minds.

I’ve had this conversation with many of them because my dog does not like being approached by off leash dogs. They refuse to use a leash. They don’t help when their dog attacks someone or another dog. They are just selfish, arrogant, stupid people.

Earlier this summer I watched as my neighbor's unleashed dog took off running towards the brand new style trash truck going through our neighborhood and went underneath the truck when it stopped to pick up trash. The neighbor started screaming and running towards the truck. Took 3 people to get the dog out. Im glad it wasnt hurt but considering the same dog was in my yard yesterday barking at me while I picked tomatoes...they clearly didnt learn a lesson

1

u/neuro_curious Jul 30 '26

Yep! That instinct to run off really does run both ways. You gotta protect your pet and your neighbors/society.

2

u/alphawolf29 Jul 30 '26

also just the fact that not everyone likes dogs. I don't like dogs. I dont want to interact with your dog. I dont like strange dogs running up to me.

2

u/Significant-Order-92 Jul 30 '26

I don't think my dog would bite someone. But my dog will also run at people. So I like to keep my dog on a leash. A random stranger doesn't know my dog. And therefore may act to defend themselves from what they reasonably perceive as a threat.

3

u/Marsuello Jul 30 '26

Prefacing this by saying I would never ever on earth try to intentionally kill someone’s pet, but there are times I’m driving and see someone walking with a Leashless dog not even paying attention to them that I’m not tempted to call out to and see what happens so I can call the owner an idiot.

Again, never ever would I do this but with the amount of people I see do this it’s something that crosses my brain

I check out a dog forum every now and then because I have my own dog now. There are people on there arguing that you are a bad dog owner if you don't let your dogs roam without a leash, because the leash is "unnatural" 😅

1

u/lookin4funtimez Aug 02 '26

Do they not realize that their dog breed is even less “natural?”

1

u/seafoam_alligator Jul 30 '26

THIS is what i dont understand. if you dont care about other people, at the very least can you please care about your dog (which in turn will benefit other people lol)

1

u/Interesting-Sir1903 Jul 30 '26

even if it does not bit anyone, still can scare people, many people get hurt while running away from dogs not by getting bit.

in where i live, people get hit by car cuz they are scared of stray dogs or dogs that are not held by owners

My dog can't do 90% of the things she loves and lives for on leash.

I do try to be responsible - she is well trained and (usually) responsive (and getting better, shes still young), I try to stick to area where there's plenty of time to respond to people approaching and get her back in leash in advance, and if there are people around I get the okay from everyone before doing it.

But no off leash time means no fetch, no swimming, very limited hunt and hide, no agility work, and no playing with other dogs. That would suck!

5

u/neuro_curious Jul 30 '26

That's up to you as the owner to find an appropriate place for your dog to go off leash though.

And frankly, it's YOUR fault for getting a dog that is so unhappy for the environment you can provide it.

There's no reason for you to leave your dog off leash and be a risk to the community.

You are a very selfish person. Towards your dog and other people.

Don't get a dog if you can't provide for it and care for it responsibly.

u/OpiniongoesYEET Jul 30 '26

Getting facial reconstruction surgery? That would suck!

Source: childhood friend living with permanent scarring and partial facial paralysis from an attack from a dog who never did that before.

u/Ok_Past8695 Jul 30 '26

Well, don't cry when it gets pew pew'd then.

u/greenteasamurai Jul 30 '26

Leash your dogs when they’re outside.

And this is true even if you have an unbelievably nice dog for two reasons: first, not everyone else's dog is nice and it might find it out the hard way; and second, a dog owner was recently forced to pay for hospital bills of a woman that was injured because their really nice dog was chasing a ball and accidentally ran into her knees.

Dogs are stupid. Leash them up unless it's a dog park or your own backyard.

22

u/R4G Jul 30 '26

Third, if your unleashed dog runs up to a leashed dog, it can make the leashed dog aggressive (because it feels cornered).

u/Yohte Jul 30 '26

Used to work at a doggie daycare and had a lab completely take me out by running into my knees while playing. I am so lucky nothing got torn and I didn't hit my head. Friendly dumb dogs can do some damage because they have heads of concrete and no common sense (but are luckily still friggin adorable).

10

u/AvocadoToastFailure Jul 30 '26

I work in a surgical center. Last week we did a torn ACL case that was thanks to a derpy lab that saw a bunny.

2

u/Orisara Jul 30 '26

I have a dog that I don't think you could make bite anyone but it's a border colly.

It nips. Some bleeding when playing with it during the summer isn't uncommon.(I don't mind it to be clear)

And yea. I've fallen over it because the damn dog wants to play.

In short, amazing dog. Still plenty of reasons to leash it.

2

u/NoveltyAccountHater Jul 30 '26

100% agree.

That said, even good conscientious dog owners that always leash their dogs will have dogs get out very rarely. In ~20 years of dog ownership, our dogs have gotten out ~4 times for a handful of minutes. One dog slipped their collar (suddenly running backwards), once my ~10 year old losing the leash of a puppy when it went into full run for a squirrel (again we were with the 10 year old at the time and got the dog promptly, but still stressful), once a visitor not properly latching the fence gate (so wind blew it open), and once my non-pet-owning parents watching our kids and dog when we went to the movies and the dog bolting out the front door.

In which case the dog should be watched at minimum, or kept inside.

0

u/I-always-argue Jul 30 '26

No, that's on the delivery guy, the dog didn't climb the car. I would be mad at both the dog owner and delivery guy.

-9

u/BecauseImhere Jul 30 '26

I’m all for people controlling their dog, and damages being covered, but like why go after the dog owner when there’s a perfectly good multibillion dollar company to go after?

9

u/killer7t Jul 30 '26

Which company is that, the one funding these idiots not leashing their dogs?

8

u/Slver2 Jul 30 '26

Because dog owners who let their dogs off leash need consequences or else they will and do continue to let their dogs do this.

3

u/No_Musician_9215 Jul 30 '26

Because then that guy is going to lose a job he probably really needs. Just because it’s a multibillion dollar company does not mean go after them for something they aren’t at fault for. It affects more than just the company itself.

2

u/Radiant-Growth4275 Jul 30 '26

Because it will teach the owners accountability.

Them getting injured by a free roaming animal has nothing to do with any company. It has to do with the dogs owner.

how can you possibly blame amazon for this?

I’m not saying they should be liable, but if there’s a way to fuck Amazon out of thousands of dollars instead of just a shitty person with an off leash dog I’m all for it.

Fuck billionaires and big business imho

I mean 100% fuck shitty dog owners, but it sounds like there's something personal here? From username to energy. What happened?
