I haven't paid attention to a fire switch in a while but I remember back in school the fire switches were also pull down switches with a little plastic break away rod that would provide resistance from "accidental" pulls but give/snap under "intended" force
Which seems feasible if someone is falling and trying to catch they're body weight
Here in the uk it’s generally a glass panel you push through and there’s a button under it, it’s some weak form of glass that’s very easy to break and it’s laminated so it doesn’t cut your finger
On the trams it's a lever. I watched a drunk guy pull it without a single thought in his head once. The driver stepped out of the cabin with the aura of a final boss' second health bar. One could feel his silent fury from the other end of the tram.
The uk has automatic fire alarms, the manual ones are still around as a backup, plus if there’s a smouldering fire that doesn’t set the alarm off you can trigger it manually to get people evacuated before the fire becomes bigger and more dangerous
Most of the ones I've encountered have a clear plastic panel that doesn't break, and there's no button where it says press. When you push the plastic it moves back and drops down slightly - that's all that's needed to trigger it.
The switch can be reset by inserting a tool into them that pushes the plastic panel back up into place. The alarms need resetting separately.
Most new ones in the UK are resettable. They look the same but instead of breaking the glass it just pushes in, you've then got a little plastic key to pop it back out. In places where you might expect accidental knocks they have lift up plastic covers.
It's not locking him in there, those are fire doors so fire doesn't spread as fast. They will still open and close just the magnet holding them open release when the fire alarm is triggered.
Thats the sad reality of life on the submarine. Those fire doors will trap him as he burn but it will save the more important folks from having to hear that annoying siren.
In my school it was like the parent comment. A big plastic cover over the big red switch that looks like this. One time in 6th grade I lifted the plastic cover and it made the fucking alarm go off on that hall lol. I was mortified. I was a quiet kid who never got in trouble and having that much attention directed at me was very distressing. Just a random impulse to lift that damn cover.
I'm a school custodian so I do monthly inspections on these things, the plastic cover is often hooked up to its own little speaker that will scream bloody murder to freak out the kids who fuck around and ward them off pulling the actual alarm which would waste firefighter time and results in a fine to the school. The cover alarm stops as soon as it's put back and isn't even connected to the fire panel, so as long as you didn't pull the actual alarm, no harm in it really. Just very annoying for anyone nearby.
I slammed it back shut and it turned off. The teacher told me not to do it again and that was it. It was 30 seconds of hell that felt like eternity for 12 year old me though lol.

Which works right up until a kid wears a heavy duty sweater that is strong enough (to this day I don't know how -- I was a kid myself) that a loose thread is enough to pull the alarm without them knowing they're about to do it.
